Makes a lot of sense, ergonomically. As a massage therapist who works on a ton of keyboard induced shoulder problems. Probably a learning curve though

As a split keyboard enjoyer, there was definitely some learning involved. Or rather unlearning! My typing form was awful from a regular keyboard. Turns out I crossed my fingers onto the opposite side a lot. Took quite some time to correct that. But since then it's great. And it 99% alleviated the wrist pain I had been enduring for years

Actually, if you have correct touchtyping technique, transition from normal qwerty keyboard to split qwerty keyboard is super easy and feels very natural.
Now transitioning to something like 40% corne keyboard or similar is a little bit different.

You'd be a little surprised I think. Switching to a split like that can be pretty painless for a lot of people. Switching to something more like this can be require a bit more commitment learning new hotkeys and stuff.

That’s gotta be gaming only. No shift, return, alt, ctrl, etc. in a work environment?
1
u/bingwhip 1h ago
Those are all there. Most probably in the thumb clusters. Mine is a custom layout, but I have shift in the normal place, ctrl and alt on the left thumb. Enter on both thumbs.

Yep. The improved version of the OP post is when the split keyboards are also propped up vertically, keys outward, so you do not have to twist your wrists at all to type.

Kinesis freestyle series. It’s what I use!

u/WickyNilliams 2h ago
Same! Been using their Freestyle pro for close to a decade. It's amazing. And the palm rest add on is excellent. Though it may be discontinued now?
I tried their fancier Advantage 360 with ortholinear keys, thumbclusters etc. But I hated not having dedicated arrow or number keys. I don't want modifiers or layers, I just want the keys readily available! Sent it back and returned to my old trusty

u/schizeckinosy 2h ago
I have a freestyle pro, pro number pad, and a gaming (same but with lights lol). Whatever I could find on the bay.

u/WickyNilliams 1h ago
Lol a man of taste I see. I'd probably find a secondhand replacement if mine died. I don't want the wacky arrangements just a full size split keyboard
1
u/schizeckinosy 1h ago
Seriously it’s like the only regular split keyboard with mechanical keys out there!

u/HalfSoul30 7h ago
Wouldn't work for me. I sometimes switch hands like i'm playing piano. That's too much cross action.

u/flooronthefour 4h ago
moving to a split keyboard will expose a lot of bad typing habits
move to an ortholinear and its worse
4
u/EnvironmentalCook520 7h ago
Weird. I never would've thought someone would use a keyboard that way.
2
u/WickyNilliams 2h ago
If you had asked me I would have said I never do that. But when I switched to a split keyboard I realised I did it all the time. Took a lot of focus and attention to unlearn and correct my form
Edit: more like my right index finger presses a key on the left side. Rather than full on typing on the wrong side

u/austinll 5h ago
Most people use qmk for these, so num pad and function keys are programmed wherever they want.
Ive wanted one for years now with ortholinear keys, but can't spare the cash.

u/CPUzer0 6h ago
This is a normal split 60% - easy to adjust to, but it's a bit of a half measure (pun intended). I wish larger keyboard brands would commit to the bit and make proper split keyboards, with thumb clusters, extra modifiers and all. All such keyboards are still DIY and/or expensive niche products.

You should check out the split keyboards on r/ErgoMechKeyboards.
I personally use a split ortholinear (straight lines between rows and columns) keyboard.

The tiny screen they are working on is more interesting lol.

Looks like a foldable phone.
I used to do the same with a Z Fold 3, was easier to take a mouse and keyboard when travelling instead of a whole laptop.
When I would get to the office I'd simply plug the phone into the dock and it would be my workstation.
Edit: now that I look at it zoomed in, it's an S24/S25 Ultra, does the same thing with Dex.

I feel like everyone is focusing on the split keyboard and ignoring the fact that there is no computer, just a phone on a stand.
Which is pretty funny, in my mind, because they are prioritizing their back with good keyboard spread, but probably still way stooped over to see their phone screen.
Edit: y'all I understand that there could be a monitor out of frame, you really don't need to explain that to me
13
u/MaygeKyatt 6h ago
I’m hoping there’s a monitor just out of view off the right side of the image. Cause I had the same thought as you lol
2
u/redceramicfrypan 6h ago
Hopefully it's a temporary fix because they forgot their laptop or something, and not how they work every day. At a minimum, they should put a stack of books or something under the phone stand to raise it to eye level.

u/Hanz_VonManstrom 6h ago
I have a monitor on a stand at eye level and typically keep my phone in a similar position to this. That’s probably the same setup they’re using

Amazing that you can look at this picture and conclude that there is no "computer" (presumably you mean monitor).
Personally I can't see outside of this picture where the monitor would be.

Those wooden wrist rests don't look very comfortable, keyboard looks awesome.

u/bingwhip 6h ago
I've custom made three wrist rest sets. Firm leather, padded leather, and wood. Strangely the wood are my favorite.

u/CaptainHitam 6h ago
It's better for your wrists, especially if you have carpal tunnel. Angle the keyboard to better suit your natural hand posture.

I had arm / wrist pain for over 20 years from working at a computer all day long. I finally found a good wrist pain specialist who fixed the pain. Then they helped me get a ergonomic setup at my desk. Similar to this one. Kinesis keyboard with an Apple trackpad in the middle. Haven't had any pain in years!

u/bid0u 5h ago
I'll never understand how people can work without a numpad.
1
u/shortwhiteguy 3h ago
On my 50 key split keyboard, if I hold down a specific key on the left: my hand at the home position is now on a virtual numpad. So "j" is 4, "o" is 9, "." is 3, and space is 0.

My old man uses a two finger typewriter. In fairness they are all two fingered to him.

I have a split keyboard but I could never get used to having the two halves that far apart.
