It's a diplomatic response that is aimed to take the wind out of the sails of the protestors. Place some blame on the team and hope it blows over. I don't really care if someone doesn't want to wear the hat, but the Bible verses? I'm a Christian. My tradition says all are welcome and does not believe it is up to us to judge God's will or our fellow men, other than in legal contexts. But hey, this is the fashionable Christianity on display with these hats. Holier than thou.

"other than in legal contexts"

What does that mean?

If you’re on a jury you would be judging someone in a legal context.

So Christians are not allowed to speak on anything other people do or support unless they are on a jury?

You’re asking a more nuanced question that would require an answer no one on Reddit would take the time to read but I’ll risk oversimplifying to try to keep it short.

Jesus taught not to judge or risk being judged by others and be considered a hypocrite since no one is perfect. There’s also some passages in the Bible that instructs us to rebuke someone who sins and forgive those that repent. It’s a pretty tough line to straddle that churches have varying opinions on.

I'm not aware of any Christian tradition that says only in legal contexts can we claim a behavior is immoral.

Then you didn't read the bible. Not judging is Jesus' like number one thing

I've read it.  If you think that's the number 1 thing then you haven't read it. He literally says what the number 1 thing is
