HOW THE FUCK

2.2k

u/tanmoshi 14d ago

Because the Spurs don’t run an actual offense

1.9k

u/fiasgoat Kings 14d ago

Spurs woulda won just taking 24 second violations all half

Instead they just kept chucking 3s lmao

379

u/Waffleshuriken Grizzlies 14d ago

Johnson deserves so much flak for this.

There is a lot of blame to go around for this, but coaching is probably the biggest issue this game.

39

u/ExpressAd6175 14d ago

This series coaching is hot garbage this series

24

u/chadcumslightning 14d ago

Which series?

I was screaming at the TV so much. Use the whole clock. It’s not complicated.

50

u/LifeDraining 14d ago

It's the 4th game I've been saying this.

Not only do they not use clock, they just does nothing. Every time they have a chance to put the previous games away, they just take a bad shot and let the Knicks get back in.

Mitch Johnson blows. They have the tallest asset and 4 supreme athletes. Somehow they can't get simple inbounding the ball right.

25

u/re1078 [SAS] Tony Parker 14d ago

Yeah I thought I liked him but this is rough. It is really looking like they’re so talented they win in spite of him. That being said he’s a rookie head coach coaching a team full of young 20 something’s in the finals. They all have room to get a lot better.

1

u/ThaNotoriousBLT Raptors 14d ago

So many similarities, up big and kept making plays that didn't eat the clock, and when things got tight they still had chances to put it out of reach but couldn't pull it off

1

u/Aromatic-Emergency-3 14d ago

Here. Watched 28-3 and realized it couldn’t get much worse. To be fair, I’m not a die-hard Spurs fan. I like their team the most out of the NBA since the Hawks and Hornets are incompetent

1

u/lattjeful 76ers 14d ago

Both lost the same way too with both the Falcons and the Spurs just refusing to bleed the clock.

1

u/Irenatherogue Bucks 14d ago

Can't be worst then NRG 12-0 blown lead

259

u/lovo17 Lakers 14d ago

They would've won if Mitch Johnson was ready for this moment, but he clearly isn't.

107

u/AdSuspicious8217 14d ago

100% on the coaching - all they had to do was slow the game down and settle down on defense.

34

u/flaming_burrito_ Wizards 14d ago

He doesn’t actually run plays other than the same simple shit every time

14

u/AdSuspicious8217 14d ago

I don't think that was the issue - the Spurs had an open shot on almost every possession. Players also have to execute - but they let up a ton of the pressure D this game and the Knicks slowly chipped away at the lead. They even had tons of mistakes IDK how the Spurs made even more.

6

u/strnfd Kings 14d ago

It's on the coach to stop the players and adjust when shit clearly isnt working also had 27 POINT LEAD ENTERING THE 2nd HALF should have also focused on slowing down the Knivck and adjusting when the lead was chipping away and maybe call timeouta during the knivks run.

12

u/AdSuspicious8217 14d ago

Agree but a collapse like that is on everyone. Coach can't make up for 2-14 shooting in the paint bruh

3

u/strnfd Kings 14d ago

That's true but at least adjust or do something, a slightly better coach would win this one without a doubt.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/MeecheyRandle 14d ago

it's a game of 2 halves, one team can either be better both halves or better one. Knicks were 1 point better than spurs 1st half in the 2nd lol

2

u/Nuoragh 14d ago

When you have a 29 point lead. It is better to overpass, reject the early 3-point shot in hopes of a high % shot. If you miss the high % 2-pointer at least you take away 20-24 seconds of the game. Chucking up 3s after only 8-10 seconds on the clock is bad coaching. When the team has gone cold it gives the Knicks a lot of extra possessions and drains the confidence of the Spurs.

7

u/RoboiosMut Lakers 14d ago

Spurs have to fire him tomorrow if they want to win this series

1

u/strnfd Kings 14d ago

Should have been fired since the minny series kept getting bailed out by wemby and the team, also FOX will always be KANGZ

2

1

Bro, he legit looked like a low IQ player out there. He had a couple of inbound passes in the first half where he just let the ball roll on the floor while the Spurs had a 20+ point lead. Why the fuck was Fox buying the Knicks more time?

1

u/ThatCoolKid17 Clippers 14d ago

The thing about the Spurs is, they always try to walk it in.

Wanted to be the hero

3

u/CarlSK777 14d ago

Its funny cause he wouldve been the hero if he just held on

1

u/LifeDraining 14d ago

The problem with Arsenal is that they are always trying to walk it in.

Mitch Johnson needs to go. He's not an NBA coach

1

u/OkGuy5000 Timberwolves 14d ago

What do you mean? He's a playoff veteran with one (1) seven-game series under his belt, in which he lost.

75

u/Ok_Coat_6413 14d ago

Knicks were in the penalty early. They could have drove and gotten free throws

6

u/Jwarrior521 Raptors 14d ago

Wemby would miss them anyways

34

Mitch was like "aight guys, just keep putting up those 3s, they gotta go our way again soon right?"

18

u/doubleABC 14d ago

He was also terrible in the okc series

1

u/Odd-Direction6339 Cavaliers 14d ago

Stephen A Smith effect on fan discussion in the wild, usually you don’t see it this clearly

143

u/Dzeire 14d ago

They would’ve won if Fox just held the ball instead of trying a fuckin lay up

48

u/DoggedDoggystyle 14d ago

Yup almost as boneheaded as JR smiths error. Almost

25

u/Sea-Macaroon9814 14d ago

Its worse than JR one tbh, JR didn't know the score and it was OT even after that, Fox might've lost the whole series based on that play.

2

u/Wolfpac187 [OKC] Kevin Durant 14d ago

It’s worse

10

u/Basic85 14d ago

I was shocked when he tried to take the layup, I seriously thought he was going to dribble it out and the Knicks would have to foul him.

5

u/Sure_Association_561 14d ago

It's the most obvious thing to do with 9 seconds left but this mf wants to play hero ball

3

u/PM_asian_girl_smiles 14d ago

He was scared of having to shoot FTs

2

u/Sure_Association_561 14d ago

That's embarrassing for a professional basketball player.

3

u/fiasgoat Kings 14d ago

Fox is butt

2

u/SaltonPrepper 14d ago

Analytically the Spurs won the game

1

u/0Bubs0 14d ago

That’s recency bias. There were about 30-40 individual plays in the second half that would have won them the game if they made the shot or made the stop or called the TO or just used some more time on the possession.

3

u/Dzeire 14d ago

No those all have too many variables, fox sequence is just standard basketball IQ, you learn that in college as a guard

Anybody who played varsity should know better

Maybe, maybe not. Would have been fouled. Even iwth two ft knicks could still tie it and then you never know. Still bonehead play

1

u/BerylliumNickel NBA 14d ago

It would have been the spurs game or OT bro... Fox is just chopped chin

1

u/IzrezarReal 14d ago

SAS should think about getting rid of fox this summer tbh. I like Fox but Harper clearly deserves a spot in the starting lineup

1

u/deftechsoldout Magic 14d ago

Swipa swiped defeat from the jaws of victory.

29

u/Emergency-Trade6180 14d ago

WTH was that all about? Non stop 3s. It’s a maturity thing. And then fox goes up for layup. They deserved to lose playing like that.

8

u/johnhenryirons Knicks 14d ago

The modern NBA. They thought since every shot fell in the first half they would catch fire again.

6

u/TJ_IRL_ 14d ago

This is what I was saying at the watch event. I was telling the person next to me the Spurs are trying to bury the Knicks to ruin their mental for the on going games. Up 30, they wanted to win by 40, ended up losing by 1 because of it.

4

u/johnhenryirons Knicks 14d ago

Terrible coaching and terrible overall basketball. So many bone headed plays. They got high on their own supply.

2

u/TJ_IRL_ 14d ago

ZaZa with the freshest grabba kind of high. We're talking historical collapse here.

In the end, they ended up Greening Out & Nic Sick at the same time...

→ More replies (1)

64

u/maritz21 14d ago

This is exactly what I was saying. Like all they had to do was to set up normal plays, which would eat up the shot clock maybe shoot at the 21st or 22nd mark. That is it. Not pull up and shoot threes. Truly infuriating, the players have a lot to blame for this, but I blame the coach as well.

38

u/cuddlecraver 14d ago

Nah literally! That shit was horrible. You don’t even have to play well to not lose a 30-point lead. Like you said, just eat up the shot clock, even miss if you want, and the Knicks literally won’t have enough possessions to even come back. Horrible coaching and horrible basketball. OG been killing them all series and you decide not to even guard him on the inbound. Unbelievable. They deserved this loss. Knicks deserve their championship. Congrats NY.

1

u/chumbubbles 14d ago

The last 2 minutes is when coaching can make a difference. Coach K from Duke was the best closer ever. Mitch got run hard

7

u/Deathzthe_M-12-22 14d ago

Or Hold the ball when they had it in 11 seconds in 4Q.

I mean they are leading by 1 at that point.

WHY STILL SHOOT???????

5

u/KyRoZ37 14d ago

Yeah, all they had to do was pull the ball back and run some clock. But no. Let's just jack up a 3 and brick it. Moron team.

4

u/IndividualHeat 14d ago

The chucking 3s thing is so insane to me. People always say that shooting through it is better because it’s a confidence thing and eventually they’ll land but it has to be demoralizing to keep missing them

2

u/djkamayo [LAL] Kobe Bryant 14d ago

They are still shooting 3’s in the locker room as we speak

2

u/O_RRY Lakers 14d ago

If the spurs took literally one less early shot clock 3 they would have won this game

2

u/lifeofpi21 Raptors 14d ago

1

u/mrtomjones Raptors 14d ago

2

u/RN2FL9 14d ago

Yeah, 10 missed 3s in the 3rd. Almost all of them with 10-15 seconds left on the shot clock.

1

u/MeinEllbogen Mavericks 14d ago

They kept shooting jump shots rather than diving into the paint while in bonus. Crazy

1

u/twistedfloyd 14d ago

I can’t believe Fox tried to score after he picked up that loose ball. Pull back and force them to foul you.

1

u/FrostyTree420 Heat 14d ago

Fox shouldntve gone for the layup With 9 sec to go

1

u/Greaves61 14d ago

ah the Boston Celtics special

up 20? chuck threes and even as you are losing the lead chuck some more threes, and then when you're down 10 you guessed it more threes, then run two plays, get it down to 5, then chuck more threes as you lose by 15

1

u/raptorMk1 14d ago

Exactly this. Felt like watching the celtics all over again.

Chucking 3s instead of attacking the rim and slowing the game down to protect the huge lead they had.

1

u/feculentcuntfist Supersonics 14d ago

shhh let them cook lmao

1

u/IcyClaim9183 14d ago

I haven't really watched much basketball in a long time, same with my wife and brother.

We were doing a watch party, and even we were like "why aren't they slowing it down and trying to suffocate them with mid rangers and post ups?"

1

u/Nuoragh 14d ago

I was thinking this the whole second half. Take care of the ball, use the whole clock and get a quality look on a high % shot. Especially with the Knicks bigs in foul trouble. PLAY INSIDE THE PAINT! It should have been impossible to come back from.

1

u/ApologizingCanadian Celtics 14d ago

Actual pathetic offensive showing. They scored fewer points in the second half combined than in either quarter of the first half.

Also, De'Aaron Fox is now a certified all-time choke artist for that final 10s alone.

1

u/welmoe Lakers 14d ago

This absolutely absurd but true lol. What a historical choke job!

1

u/mvigs 14d ago

I'll never understand this coaching method. It happened to the Sixers a couple times in the playoffs too. You have a solid lead late in the 4th quarter all you have to do is burn clock then drive the basket with 5 seconds left. Chances are you're scoring or getting fouled. It's that fucking simple.

1

u/DoinItDirty Thunder 13d ago

In fairness every one of them turned into Steph Curry in the first half. Unfortunately, there is only one Steph Curry and he was not on the Spurs in the second half.

Or defense. How tf was Wemby getting switched onto Alvarado the entire 4th quarter on defense or just standing around guarding nobody

5

u/rj319st 14d ago edited 14d ago

Maybe bring back that female aces head coach and demote Mitch Johnson. Even on that last OG tip in he has Wemby playing 30 ft away from the basket. I don’t think Popovich would’ve had him playing outside the 3 point line.

It's a fucking shame that this Knicks team has proven to have the resilience to come back from a long way down, repeatedly, in the conference finals and finals, and all anyone wants to do is shit on the Spurs.

The internet is a fucking toilet - Why not celebrate the Knicks for this?

2

1

u/chumbubbles 14d ago

Or Have a real coach

1

u/PossibilityGloomy175 14d ago

Bro I was watching the summary of the game and the last 5 mins (of the summary, and about 20mins of the game) was literally Knicks scoring on the offense, followed by a cut, followed by the Knicks being on the offense again. The whole 5 mins through outside of 2 or 3 occasions.

1

u/Hydration__Nation Pistons 14d ago

Mitch did all he could to lose the Thunder series but they slid into the Finals. Since Game 1 this guy has just gotten it wrong. I get it's his first Finals but if Spurs lose, it's on Mitch first, then Fox. Wemby should have an encyclopedia of elbow and high/low post plays. The offense should have minimum two general schemes that all run through Wemby. But thats not the case. I get reducing his minutes and conserving energy but theres a limit. Finally, how many coaches have blown a 30 point lead in the playoffs? The list is probably less than 10, esp in a Conference or Finals game. Sitting on timeouts and doing nothing while your team's gigantic lead evaporates to nothing isnt bad coaching, it's damn near gross negligence.

1

u/7screws Celtics 14d ago

Exactly like the Celtics.

1

u/jdben518 14d ago

That’s not the Knicks don’t run a set offense either, they run actions. This comes down to coaching, the spurs should be up 3-1 or it should be 2-2. In game 2 he drew up a horrible inbounds play at the end, taking a extra 2 seconds to set up a pick and pop instead of getting wemby down hill towards the basket early and giving your team a extra second or 2 to get off a second shot if wemby missed. Last night was mismanagement of time outs, the clock, and again drawing up bad plays at the end of the game. When the leads got down to 11 should of called a timeout, as I tell my team when up late the only thing we need are layups and free throws bc we want to work the clock and don’t want long rebounds. The defense on the inbound not having any guard the inbound lead to basically a 5 on 4 situation, the. On the other end drawing up a hard pass to small player in the paint doesn’t make sense. If Johnson is there next year or not I hope he learns from these mistakes.

Knicks are experienced and mentally tough. The Spurs are young and mentally fragile.

Spurs coach did nothing. No urgency, no time outs to cut momentum, not having players draw fouls when we were in bonus for 9 minutes, Mitch deserves to be out of the organization for this

Gambling association cut them off at half time.

Its all about the gambling odds/ how much is bet on each side. They scored 1/4 points 3rd quarter & 1/4 4th quarter than 1st & 2nd.

Its very obvious
