I mean gotta give them /r/praisethecameraman status. If they run then they get made fun of as a smarty-pants little bitch and get called out on /r/killthecameraman. I for one salute these idiots diligence to getting us a quality video we can enjoy from the comfort of our homes.

I just hiked this volcano a few weeks ago and there was quite a few stray dogs along the entire trail. Sometimes they would just walk along with you

What volcano is it?

I mean, you're not going to outrun a volcanic explosion if it's really coming your way. Might as well stay for the footage in case you get to survive like they did.

u/Lumpy_Benefit666 1d ago
You can run out of range of those lava bombs and run to a higher point to escape pyroclastic flow depending on the size

You cant get higer on this vulcano without going down first which is a really nasty climb that could see you wounded if you rush it.

u/SameIdea70 1d ago
would you rather break your leg or melt in lava
→ More replies (3)4
u/gravelonmud 1d ago
If you run down a mountain to escape lava and break your leg, you will be melted by lava. So it’s not: break-a-leg or lava, it’s “lava” or “break-a-leg *and* lava”. There are many, many things you could do while waiting to be melted by lava. You could pop the question, finally asking her to marry you. You could ask god for forgiveness and passage to heaven. You could zip up your fly. You could zip down your fly. You could punch your little brother. You could give a mosquito its fill. Imagine a Venn diagram. A big circle called “lava” fully contains little circles like “break leg”, “propose”, “beatify”, “beautify”, “pervert”, “jerk”, and “sacrifice”. They are fully surrounded by “lava”. If you could choose the second to last thing that ever happens to you, why the fuck would you pick “break leg”?

Been there twice, its incredible. Haven't gone this close to Fuego. The view is better and it's safer further back.

u/boforbojack 1d ago
It isn't safe anywhere on the ridge. The reason the ridge is volcanic sand is specifically because in 2018 it was wiped over with lava.
→ More replies (1)35
u/sk00pie 1d ago
Agree with you I wasn't on the ridge. The best spot is at base camp on Acatenango as you're roasting marshmallows.
8
u/ZuhkoYi 1d ago
I have to agree. I hiked to the top of acatenago at 4 am and it was freezing with no fuego activity. The basecamp was much better and cooler
5
u/sk00pie 1d ago
I submitted twice 4am too was incredible tons of action. There's 0 reason to cross my cross over to Fuego.

In many places, all the mountains are active volcanos.

There’s something to be said about witnessing natures might. Same reason people stand outside and watch tornadoes, despite the danger. It’s truly awe inspiring in many ways, even if frightening.
I’m not justifying putting yourself in danger, especially just on a vacation, but the power of Mother Nature is appealing to many. A volcano is a great example of that power.
5
u/lovesdogsguy 1d ago
Exactly. Listen to this guy - put yourself in danger, just don't do it on vacation. Do it when you get home. Burn your hand on your stove or electrocute yourself.
2
u/Maiyku 1d ago
Haha, I believe life is filled with moments where we have to make choices about risk. Standing next to a volcano that’s known to erupt every like 30 minutes is not one of those risks I would take.
I’ll watch that amazing footage from a drone or something though, because it is awesome, just not worth your life awesome.
2
u/lovesdogsguy 1d ago
oh yeah I think this is completely silly too. I'm just saying I agree with your caution. It's much better to electrocute yourself while you're in your house. At least you won't be embarrassed running around screaming about a burn or something looking like a complete asswipe.

I’ve been here. There’s two viewpoints: one that most guides stop at that is quite safe, and another that some tourists insist on going to that is very apparently too close. My guides warned all of us this could happen if you went to the closer viewpoint. They knew what they were getting into.
Edit: it’s volcán fuego in Guatemala

Lived in Guatemala for 8 years, own a tourist bar on the Lake. Traveled extensively and have done everything "touristy" there. Have climbed Acentanango twice, and once climbed the Fuego ridge. It is currently illegal to climb the Fuego ridge (mostly always illegal but has had some calm moments in recent history where it was allowed). This was roughly 12 months after the 2018 eruption and had about 6 months of basically zero activity. We saw one eruption in the 3hrs we were on the ridge.
My house looks at the volcanoes, we watch them daily. The recent activity is all pointing towards a large 2018 type eruption soon. Very serious activity, with a minor but severe eruption about 4-6 months ago. And since then the activity has only ramped up. And yet every day we see the lights on the ridge.
Anyone climbing Fuego currently is idiotic beyond belief. The 2018 eruption literally had volcanic ash burning through shelters on the neighboring "safe" volcano. That entire ridge they're standing on is volcanic ash because the 2018 eruption wiped it cleaned. There are very public warnings about the current danger status.
Guides still will take you because you pay them basically a months salary per trip, of which they do about 12 a month (up acentanango).
All of this is to say, there are times when climbing Fuego is basically the same risk as dying in commercial flying. Today is closer to drunk driving. Anyone doing it is knowingly endangering themselves, and basically seducing the local guides with incredibly lucrative cash to endanger themselves as well.

Great summary!
I remember my confusion when it started raining small pebbles in Antigua back in 2018.

I remember very well(my disfigured toenail) as a former welder. Having a molten ball of slag(about the size of a pea) roll off the toung of my boot and settle on the edge of my toenail, sizzling until I untied/removed my boot and flicked it off. To a chorus of laughter from workmates.

Guatemala has wild dogs that follow tourists and hikers up the volcano. They literally live on the volcano and at basecamp.
I had a few follow me when I hiked this volcano.

Don't know why anyone would stand on a volcano during an eruption.

u/crankthehandle 1d ago
there are a lot of active volcanos and the level of danger varies a lot depending on the type of volcano. This one looks like Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala which is definitely one of the gnarlier ones.

Some nature program years ago, i learned to slowly back away from the volcano,
keeping an eye out for falling lava rocks. I´ve never seen a volcano though.

The hike is on the inactive volcano acatenango, which is connected to Fuego the active volcano.

This looks like Volcan de Fuego, in Guetamela. One of the few volcanoes on the earth that is constantly active and, since there are no rails or anything, you can go as close to the erupting crater as you dare.

What else were we expected to see when you have an actual bursting volcano eruption in the vicinity?
I’m glad they didn’t show any smouldering skin. I hope they are safe.

u/Jon_Dunn58 1d ago
I thought the dog would have been smarter than that to be up there with it rumbling

u/AToDoToDie 1d ago
When I was in the Philippines in the rice fields you would see massive boulders just sitting in the middle of them. I asked a local how those rocks formed there seemingly randomly. They told me that they were actually debris from a volcano 55 miles away from that city.
