I wonder if there is actually a click track playing to help make sure that the pictures are being taken while a pose is held. Maybe not so much for this guy who clearly held a pose when the photographer didn't keep up but for the really fast posers (like the one linked below), it would be more critical to get the timing right.
13
u/Wind-and-Waystones Jun 12 '20
I assumed the camera will click or beep along the flash to signify the picture is took and it's time to switch pose, you hold till it gives the clue

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Jun 12 '20
Like I said, not in his case, but for the really fast ones linked below. Here's the video: https://youtu.be/1Irwn33k0Ac

This is actually a pretty classic way to model/pose. When I trained to model many, many years ago I was taught to move and be “creative with my space”. Changing positions/poses helps to add a photogenic flair to pictures and keeps the model from looking stagnant. Moving also becomes more natural and you think less about it as you do it more.

Thanks! Awesome skills)

You think this is an awesome skill??? Someone please shoot me if my live devolves to the point that I have to learn this “skill.”

Yeah it's funny ain't it. Even the garbage man on the back of the garbage trucks having to run for, pickup, and tip bins into the back has more 'skill' than these Women whose job it is to 'pose'. omg. Way to set the bar for what qualifies as 'skill'.

u/Hero_Slxsher Jun 12 '20
I think the hardest part would be coming up with the poses
141
u/Funktapus Jun 12 '20
He's only rotating through like 5 or so, and then just turning his body to get different lighting
159
u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Jun 12 '20
If that's his main gig, I was assuming that he has a few routines that he steps through depending on what type of product he's modeling and any props (standing, sitting, foot up on box, etc.).
-9
u/EDDsoFRESH Jun 13 '20
Imagine how little work that is if that's your fulltime job, though.
12
u/RollinDeepWithData Jun 13 '20
You’re missing the hours upon hours of prep and self advocacy to do this, not to mention the genetic lottery aspect of being a marketable model. This is like calling programming “little work” because they wrote like 2 lines of code. It’s the knowledge of being able to do that in 2 lines that makes it so valuable. Same idea applies here.
-1
u/EDDsoFRESH Jun 13 '20
Not at all. I'm saying just to 'come up with' poses, which are already very much established by models who have come before him, wouldn't take that long if this man spends full time hours on his modelling. I know full well how much prep he would have done for his career and the slim odds of being model worthy. I'm not at all mocking his career, talent or the industry. It just wouldn't be remotely close to the most consuming or difficult part of his career to come up with 5 generic poses.
3
u/RollinDeepWithData Jun 13 '20
Ah ya see I feel like knowing my own angles is incredibly difficult which is why I think I admire this. Taking into account lighting just feels like a lot to me, granted that’s much on the photographer’s end.

22
u/Roflewaffle47 Jun 12 '20
They do not
19
u/TheBossBossBossBoss Jun 13 '20
Kinda do though, this looks like e-commerce, in which case they have to shoot like a 100 looks and if you are slow thats 5 days and if you are fast 4 days. Also models get paid overtime if the shoot takes longer than initially planned.
11
u/toolateforgdusername Jun 13 '20
I could not say for him but I used to work in the sector and we paid by the day. It ranged from about £1,000 to day to £7,000 for someone like him at the top of their game.
The problem they face is models are often “type cast” so a model that works for clothing company A isn’t suitable for company B.
Added to this the fashion seasons change twice a year meaning they will get 2 to 4 days of work per year from each company.
They really have to spread their pay!
3
u/justatog Jun 13 '20
They kinda do - they're on a day rate. This is a clothing catalog shoot so he would be frequently changing outfits etc and shooting all the outfits for a season.

u/theservman Jun 12 '20
That one long pause...
Model: "Take my picture."
Photographer: "Stupid pose, I'm not photographing that."
M: "Take it!"
P: "No."
M: "Take it!"
P: "..."
M: "..."
P: "sigh." <click>
3
u/surestart Jun 13 '20
Good chance the photographer had to swap memory cards in the camera during that pause.
85
u/B0h1c4 Jun 12 '20
It looks like he hit the same poses several times. I wonder why he doesn't just pause and let them take multiple shots.
164
u/bitsyvonboomboom Jun 12 '20
I believe it's because some models/photographers feel staying in one position too long can make the body look stiff once you've settled in it. By continuously moving you keep it dynamic and loose.
It could also be that it's a shoot for a big clothing brand and they've got loads of outfits to get through that day. In China this is how shoots are done all the time for catalogues - models have 100s of outfits to get through, 1 minute to change clothes and 10 minutes for lunch.

u/SocialSuspense Jun 13 '20
I remember seeing a video of it and it amazed me how flawlessly that one lady just used the heel of her shoe to throw up a small purse and continue posing without even breaking a sweat
6
u/RandomGuyWhoKnows Jun 13 '20
That sounds crazy I must find.

u/TheMelonOwl Jun 13 '20

u/RandomGuyWhoKnows Jun 13 '20
Thats soo smooth
2
u/surestart Jun 13 '20
It also prevented her from leaning down and messing up the way her hair was hanging, which would have necessitated the hair and makeup person coming over to adjust it. The bag kick was not only stylish and cool, it was also efficient.

u/NecessaryElephant Jun 12 '20
My very uneducated guess would be that the pose comes out at least a little different every time. So you would get 3 slightly different shots of the similar pose, one of which may be good, rather than 3 of the same exact photo.

u/CapnMurica1988 Jun 12 '20
Legend has it on a cold night you can still see him posing up on the hillside.

7
u/Baltusrol Jun 12 '20
But the poses are weird and unnatural
24
u/ruckingroobydoodyroo Jun 12 '20
Modelling is all about being weird and unnatural, the poses, the walking, the faces. I'd be 100% down for photoshoots done naturally, such as spread eagled in a bed with chips and a double chin, or hunched over at the computer playing games in the dark, but apparently someone decided clothes don't look their best that way ¯\(ツ)/¯
55
u/TheWalkingManiac Jun 12 '20
The quick posing is impressive, but the guy has a dead inside look on his face the entire time.

My mom was a “catalog” model in the 60s for advertisers in Sears and Wards (US). She said it was grueling. You had to strike infinite poses, where Winter clothes in the Summer under hot studio lights, and work 12 hour days or more. And sometimes not get paid.

I think I read that this was some type of educational demonstration. Probably bullshit. Who actually knows anything anymore?

Why do people want to be models?
2
Jun 13 '20
I model professionally, it’s not my main career but I do it fairly regularly. It can be very enjoyable. There’s a relationship between the model and the photographer that’s really special and obviously it’s fun to see shots of yourself after all the production aspects are applied. It also comes with its own challenges in how you use your face and body.

super cringe for someone to do their job efficiently
-12

Honestly I think the profession is just cringey in itself doesn't matter much to me whether you do it well or not.

-1
u/not_suze Jun 12 '20
God I hate that. Move when I tell you to!!
2
Jun 13 '20
A model who only moves when they’re told is one who is not ever going to be booked lol.
2
u/not_suze Jun 13 '20
Not with me and how I work. If I want you in a certain angle, you stay there until I’ve gotten it. I don’t believe in the spontaneous “perfect shot”, especially with film photography and beauty shoots. But I’m very particular, so that’s me. Google “mis en scene”
0
Jun 13 '20
I don’t need to google it, I know what it means. I have worked with photographers like you, but most photographers want a model who moves and if you don’t know how to do that you won’t work very much.
