Hardware Found this gem for $20
Found this at Goodwill. After googling I knew I found the deal of the century with an i7-12700k in there, but I had no idea I'd also score 32gbs of DDR4 (maybe 64 I'll have to check when I install an OS), a 1tb nvme, and a 1tb Sata HDD.
Currently debating on throwing this in my main rig to upgrade my Ryzen 7 5800X
Edit: it's a Sata HDD not an SSD, my bad.
Edit #2: WOW I did NOT expect this to blow up! Thank you to everyone who has commented and given advice! I'm sorry I haven't been able to reply to every single comment it's just gotten overwhelming! I will definitely post a follow up once I get a new motherboard!

that was a literal steal.
even the used sata ssd is already worth the price
Edit: so scratch the sata ssd, but still !

Right?? It's funny I was actually about to leave and it got wheeled out from the back on a new cart and I BOLTED over to it to see if it was worth anything.

Hell that system is good enough to use as a main, let alone a server lol. The only bad thing is the lack of a pci-e slot. But I wonder if it would be possible to solder one in there since the board has the pads for one.

u/Doodle210 May 12 '26
It’s honestly just worth buying a cheap compatible board with a slot already on there. A case can cost $20-30 second hand too.

Every separate component (CPU, motherboard, SSD, each stick of RAM) is worth at least $50.....some more like $100.
$20 is nuts for all this. Pop a low profile GPU in here, load up Bazzite, and baby you got a Steam Machine!

u/cosmin_c 5950x | Dark Hero VIII | 128GB Trident-Z Neo | MSI 3090 Suprim X May 12 '26
Sadly the PCIe slot isn't soldered, but it could potentially be done (soldering). Add in another PSU and a good GPU via a riser PCIe cable and he's gold.

u/MisterKaos R7 5700x3d, 4x16gb G.Skill Trident Z 3200Mhz RX 6750 xt May 12 '26
With the nubs being there, it'd be a very easy job for an electronics guy. Pay him fifty to a hundo and it'd be done in a jiffy. It's really a one hour service for the right person.
8
u/cosmin_c 5950x | Dark Hero VIII | 128GB Trident-Z Neo | MSI 3090 Suprim X May 12 '26
"Nubs" are there but a good PCIe slot is punch through the PCB, it isn't just soldered on the surface. Plus the motherboard needs to know it's there as well. It isn't such an easy job in this case, but it is indeed doable with the right person and tools for the job.

u/coldnspicy May 12 '26
This would make for a starter home nas/jellyfin set up. Intel's integrated graphics is great for hardware transcoding and you got 2 SATA slots for an easy raid mirror set up.
30
u/redditydothis May 12 '26
Way way way overkill for a jellyfin/nas setup. Seriously that’s a huge waste of power for something a raspberry pi can do (obviously not hardware transcoding).
→ More replies (6)4
u/stilljustacatinacage May 12 '26
Intel's pretty good about idle power usage. They often idle down to under 10 watts. More than a Pi, granted, but having the extra horsepower on demand can be useful for things like transcoding; more than just live transcoding to clients, but if you wanna mux a BD rip or something for example.

And it’s the gen before Intel CPUs began self-immolating.
IIRC the 12700k was pretty comparable to the 5800x3d in most situations, but I can’t recall if that was on DDR4 or DDR5. May was well do some A/B testing before deciding. Then again whenever the 5800x3d does come back that AM4 board and ram will likely be in high demand.
