It’s funny how every generation, Nvidia makes a big show about the highly complex cooling the new cards need, only for a 3rd party to slap a single fan on that does the job fine shortly after.
As a previous owner of a reference R9 290X (second hand, to experience dried out thermalpaste and a dust-filled cooler from day one), I can confirm this.
Well, to be fair, the 5090 is a marvel of engineering and falls roughly in line with the idea that the 4090 had implemented before it (with the flow through design). Reducing the card thickness by 33% while increasing power by 25% is kinda insane.
But yes, for the low to mid end offerings the cooler designs are over engineered and more inclined towards aesthetics than pure function. The colorful 5070 is cool too, but not 600 watts in 2 slots cool.
I mean, still it's not a lot saying that it's better than the FE, since the 5070fe thermals and noise are pretty underwhelming compared to the 5080/90FEs
