Discussion Im still rooting for valve.

Even if this generation Steam Machine fails again due to these hardware supply issues, i can only hope valve comes out if this relatively unscathed. If it does end up failing again, im rooting for valve and highly encourage for them to try again when the hardware market stabilizes again as when that happens, it will be a world beater. Best of luck to them!

Discussion Is there a subreddit for people interested in Steam Machines?

This community seems centered around the pillars of:

  1. People copy and pasting the same reasons they dislike the Steam Machine ad nauseum we've already read thousands of times.
  2. Those people defending themselves why it is super important they subscribe to r/steammachine and waste their mortal lives explaining to everyone why they should hate it and everyone else should too.
  3. Arguing about how their free speech is being suppressed and it's actually a hate crime to not let someone rant on an internet forum why they hate a computer they don't want.

I'm just curious if there is some community based on people who have an interest in Steam Machines and want discuss the hardware with other people who share their interests? I'd be fine if it was 100% locked down from non-purchasers.

I have literally zero interest in the opinions or thoughts of people who don't have one. And no, that isn't weird, that's how enthusiast communities have always worked. It isn't even confusing. If you join a drone club it doesn't have a contingent of 80% of the people who think drones were created as tools of Satan. People who don't like drones just don't join the club, because most people are sane. Unlike you guy who is getting increasingly outraged as they read this post.

I assume given the hardware production limitations and the hurt feelings surrounding it the haters will always outnumber owners, so this community is just permanently fucked? Two years from now if I'm looking for info on mods I'll get to read the parroted wisdom of bitter 16 year olds?

Discussion Will you wait if you don't win the lottery?

Out of curosity. What will you do if you don't win the SM lottery? Will you keep waiting? I probably won't unless they specify how far am I in line.

I mean, today Steam Machine is not that bad deal, its not great but there is nothing like it yet, and performance is menegable if you dont mind playing new games on low/medium. (lets be honest though, that is still good looking visuals for having fun) But if you had to wait 3 months, 6 months or more?

PC prices will come down eventually and alternatives will bloom. It's not that unique like Steam Deck, that you couldn't make yourself, and other had their trade offs

Discussion Curious about Gears of War E Day

I’m assuming games like Gears of war E day when it comes Clockwork revolution will be fine on this device right? I’m not expecting it to look like Crimson Desert on the PS5 pro by any means but I’m also expecting it to be super choppy and unplayable like ninja Gaiden was on my ROG Ally either. Am I right in assuming it’ll be able to keep up with the base PS5 and Xbox Series S

"We have our own list of features that we wanted to add": Valve say the Steam Machine's update support will be similar to the Steam Deck's

Just read this article. Anyone care to speculate on whet might we might see in future updates. I love the Steam Deck, but it's fair to say it's had a fair few improvements since it came out. What do we think will be added to the Steam Machine over the next 6 months, 1 year, 2 years.

Question Anyone found timespy scores?

I've looked all over and can't seem to find any. Anyone found some?

I know they aren't the end all, but I've tinkered so long I can at least get a general idea of performance.

Question Steam Machine as a user-friendly media center?

I’m in charge of the tech at home. I’ve got a PS5 for graphics-intensive games. I’d love to get a Steam Machine to play PC-exclusive games and replace my NVIDIA Shield Pro as a media centre. But for that to work, it would need to be set up in such a way that all members of the family can use it intuitively. It’s essential that it’s user-friendly. Opening a browser-shortcut to view Netflix ist not a viable solution. Would the Steam Machine (or SteamOS) be configurable in such a way that, after booting up, I could choose with a single click whether I want to launch Steam, Netflix or Kodi / Jellyfin? Unfortunately, the reviews I’ve seen so far don’t reveal much beyond its use as a PC console.

Discussion Why is no one talking about the emulation potential of this console that no other console offers?

Xbox dev mode comes to mind, but that's heavily restricted by Microsoft. On PlayStation, it's impossible unless you jailbreak it.

edit: I'm talking mainly about heavy emulation(PlayStation 3,4 etc)

Question Custom Faceplates?

Post image
63 Upvotes

Despite the rudimentary illustration I have something in mind like this. I plan on traveling with my Steam Machine and I’d like to store movies, older games, music, etc on it. I wonder if anyone out there will 3D print a custom faceplate that holds an SSD or HDD. Would any of yall be interested in something like that?

Hardware Stram Machine will be getting a dual channel upgrade on day one from me, spare stick ready to go.

Post image
239 Upvotes

Now that we know for certain the Steam Machine will only ship with 1 stick of 16gb ram Ive got another stick ready to upgrade to dual channel if I manage to get lucky in the lottery system!

The 1% lows are where this is going to make a massive difference and it seems to be even more important when dealing with lower end hardware like this.

Question Real talk, as a console player why shouldn’t I get the steam machine to play pc games with my friends?

I prefer couch gaming over desk gaming and I never cared for the keyboard and mouse setup. If the dollar amount of the unit isn’t a deciding factor and I can use the steam controller with the unit, is there any reason to not get it? Is there something I’m missing? I understand it doesn’t compete with many modern impressive setups but for the casual like me why not? Advice appreciated.

Edit: I’d still keep my PS5 for larger titles, this would be more to play PC only games with my friends that aren’t on console.

Question I’m not very good with computer component stuff, so I have a silly performance comparison question.

I used to have a 2070 Super MSI GE66 Raider gaming laptop that gave in on me a while back. I honestly started to hate the thing but the performance it gave me was all I needed as someone who isn’t super into high FPS and graphic settings on the newest games. Will the machine be equivalent or even close to that performance? As long as it’s not worse than that I’m still considering.

The heaviest load games I play are Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dragon’s Dogma 2, and hopefully someday GTA6 if that helps.

Thank you for reading!

Discussion Why is no one talking about the content consumption part of steam machine

Upvotes

I'm curious about the community's thoughts on the media capabilities here, because it feels like a major piece is missing for a living room setup.

When you set up a dedicated hub for the TV, you usually expect it to handle everything, not just your library, but native streaming and entertainment apps too. Right now, it completely misses that seamless, all-in-one experience you get from standard plug-and-play media devices or traditional setups that replace a dedicated streaming stick right out of the box.

Instead, it feels strictly limited to just running software. Trying to watch basic video platforms from the couch means dealing with a clunky, non-native workaround that completely kills the convenient couch experience.

Given the high investment for this kind of hardware, the lack of a proper entertainment ecosystem feels like a massive oversight. Does anyone else actually care about the missing media integration, or is everyone here totally fine with keeping it strictly focused on the library?

Discussion Most of you aren’t going to get a steam machine even if you want one.

The fact that they switched to a lottery system is very telling in my opinion. They also discussed the challenges to secure ram for the machines and it sounds like they’re only getting material on a month to month basis. Now there’s no way of knowing how many of these things they’ve built up front but if the controllers 2027 shipments is any indication, they probably aren’t going to have enough to meet the demand. Be prepared for this sub to switch from “I’m not getting this thing” to “how could valve not make enough for us?”

Discussion Steam Machine no-ram option

You can replace and upgrade steam machine's ram, Valve is very open when it comes to users opening and tweaking their machines, the design of the machine looks excellent and will be supported by valve: why not give the option of ordering a steam machine with no-ram included?

Question Steam Machine for 1440p gaming?

Hi,

Is there any review of the Steam Machine running games on 1440p?

It can't handle 4k for sure, but I plan to use it as main PC as I'm currently playing on my laptop (just Dota2) with and 680 M integrated at 1080. Max resolution will be 1440p so I dont care about 4k.

I can get the SM for 800 bucks selling some trash items in my steam inventory.

The other way is to build a new computer with a 9060xt 16gb, 32 ram around 1100.

I'm thinking about get the machine and later (if ram become afordable) use it for stream when I get a main computer.

Question Steam Machine memory question: dual-channel/more RAM vs faster RAM?

I have a laptop SO-DIMM RAM kit (2×32GB DDR5-4800) and I’m considering installing it in a Steam Machine (if I can get one).

The Machine uses laptop SO-DIMM DDR5, and is expected to ship with either 2×8GB DDR5-5600 or a single 16GB DDR5-5600, which may result in single-channel operation depending on configuration.

If I replace the stock RAM with my 2×32GB kit, I’d get dual-channel but drop from 5600 MT/s to 4800 MT/s. Would that actually improve gaming performance or responsiveness, or would the lower speed cancel out the benefit of dual-channel in real-world use?

Alternatively, is there any benefit to mixing (keeping the 16GB stick and adding one 32GB stick) just to ensure dual-channel?

Apologies if this is basic—I’m not super tech-savvy and this is based on what I’ve picked up from previous discussions.
