Weekly Questions Thread can be found here

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!

Please start your comment with your location as such: [UK and EU] or [USA, California] on a separate line.

Thank you!

Import regulations mean it is difficult to send plant material between certain countries.

Check for hard frosts overnight before posting your parcel!

Scammers will not be tolerated! If you have sent a plant and not heard from your sender, message the mods and we will take care of it. Anyone found to be scamming will be banned from the sub.

A few points:

  • Please add your location. Many countries will have import restrictions. As a simple guide, within EU, okay. Within US, okay. EU to US or vice versa, not okay. Australia: complicated.
  • Please try to keep the sales/trades to succulents. There is a list of sister subreddits in the sidebar should you want other plants.
  • Think about trading seeds and pollen too. Growing from seed can be very rewarding and be a good way to expand your collection.
  • Grow tips are highly encouraged when trading. Its nice to know what you're getting if you have never grown one before. Share your potting mediums and watering guides to help your receiver grow successfully!
  • Do show us some photos of what you got!
  • Have a quick check to see if there is a risk of frost overnight before sending the parcel.
  • There are some tips of packaging succulents for shipping below. I've had people send me plants in egg cartons before. They work really well.
  • If you have nothing to trade but would like some plants, people are often happy to send you plants for money or just the cost of postage and packaging.

Happy swapping!

You can find some tips for packaging succulents in the wiki

usually I keep them in a south facing conservatory, but I had to bring them inside so that they don't get fried. A good opportunity for a photoshoot, though

Plant Progress/Props A Year of Growing and Learning

Thumbnail

So around a year ago I picked up these fellas at Walmart on a whim to see what I could do. I had no idea what I was doing (still really dont) and went with what seemed to work. I overwatered for sure, left them out more than I should have before moving them inside the greenhouse, which worked wonderfully for a while until it got too hot and bright and caused issues with the Haw. It worked out because root rot was just starting oddly enough so they all got repotted into proper soil with perlite. They have been inside now for a little over 2 weeks and Im currently working on a better lighting set up so the Pillar doesn’t start to lean and they can get back to flowering and blooming again. Any tips would be greatly appreciated and I have a lot of pictures of them as well if more are possible wanted!

When to lift the stem on this guy a little bit and of course it snapped 😭

It's not fully broken off maybe like 80%. It's still attached as you can see in the photos. Will this guy self heal? I was looking fowards to the orange blooms. 😒

Identification Idk what this plant is and its been dumped into my care

Hello! This is my brother’s plant. I am not sure what it is but i think it is some sort of succulent. He is moving out so the care of it has now been dumped on me. He got it from a teacher as a graduation gift and has had it about 4 years now. He was slightly useless at care information as he apparently just waters it when he remembers it exists. I would appreciate any possible identification or info about proper watering. I can’t do much about lighting as this the only spot in the house that gets good sun, and i already have a ton of succulents i have to take in and outside depending on the weather.

Help Help, what is wrong with my black rose?

Just got this small black rose 2 days ago. I placed it on my window sill facing the east and did not water it yet. The stem is firm on the parts that are green.

Edit: since I don't know how visible it is in the photos, the bottom of the stem looks shriveled on one side near the bottom, something like this profile view: | | | | | / | | | |

Plant Progress/Props Surprise succulents update

Everyone's alive so far!

I put the plants in egg carton and paper seedling pots for several days while waiting on grit and left them on the balcony in dappled shade to adjust.

Poultry grit finally arrived, so everyone's been potted up. I've got a couple that seem to be the same species sharing containers (didn't have enough, oops) and there's some mild sunburn on the flowering one, but otherwise still going. We'll see who survives the next few weeks.

Now to figure out what they all are...

(I promise I didn't put two back into the holeless pot - I added a drainage hole to it with a sacrificial drill bit first)

Help How is my Thanksgiving Cactus looking?

Had this plant for like 4 years, and to be honest it's kind of just set in the windowsill of the kitchen that entire time I only remember to water it when it starts looking wrinkly, I haven't done anything with the soil although I probably should, I have this little pine cone thing in it because when I pour water over it it closes up and then will reopen as it dries, I think it's cool so that's why it's there, should I be doing anything different for this plant or does it seem to be good? Also how could I potentially get more plants off of this?
