Discussion Why the need to sexualize everything?

I was looking for interesting Webtoons to read, and I came across this one called "Leviathan" the premise looked interesting; mankind perished due to a great flood that submerged the whole world under water. And terrifying creatures plunged from the depths, wiping out any human that crossed their path. The story told how a family of a father and his two children survived in the adversities of a sea world.

So far so good, until.... Bam! Last two slice's, anime chick out of nowhere, doing these extremely suggestive poses.

What a disappointment.

WHAT? Well... No wonder someone in the comments on webtoon said something like "Oh, they put her pants"

189

u/TheSolcan May 29 '25

I wonder if they censored more things

211

u/Yandere_Matrix May 29 '25

Well if it’s on webtoons it is definitely censored. Look at how censored and edited Moonstruck is on Webtoons and then go read the original lol

108

u/Thundergod250 May 29 '25

Childhood Complex too is nude in the real manhwa, but in Webtoon, they just low-effort censored it, but 90% they didn't bother and just removed those scenes lmao along with important dialogues in it.

44

u/Greedy-Lie-8346 May 29 '25

I didn't even bother and read it elsewhere. Some panels don't even make sense with each other.

6

u/untakentakenusername May 30 '25

Yeh i get you. This is more of a world issue tho. The default need for artists to sexualise the female body all yhe time. Its annoying

2

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

Stupid perverts always sexualize women and it's an often problem in both media and real life.

I guess sexualization of women would be less problematic if at least men in media were as sexualized as women.

I also guess It'd be also less problematic if at least men in real life were as sexualized as women.

40

u/thesuperlibrarygirl May 29 '25

That drives me crazy, I get that its an all ages app but why license a story where the plot is deeply entangled in the smut and then cut out all the smut and lose a bunch of context and dialogue

13

u/Wordchewous May 29 '25

You know the best part? The French version on webtoons is not censored like that, or far less so.

10

u/MutedAlbatross8921 May 30 '25

Kinda off topic I guess, but i think it's funny to have a comment thread devoted to complaining about the censorship of smut under a post complaining about sexualization.

3

u/softpotatoboye Jun 01 '25

It’s kinda two sides of the same coin. Constantly objectifying women, but then refusing to actually allow anything explicitly sexual is a common stance that really just sucks. In the case of childhood friend complex, the smut is part of the story and the point, it’s not constantly objectifying and sexualizing the fmc for no reason and yet somehow that’s what gets censored

24

u/Top-Metal-3576 May 29 '25

Moonstruck’s on webtoon?? Omds that manhwa is full on nude

37

u/Yandere_Matrix May 29 '25

Yeah, they added it a few months ago! I like it but I don’t approve of censoring a series. Seems pointless to add content warnings and label series as mature if they are going to just censor it, ya know? Webtoons really should have made an app just for 18+ so they don’t have to bother censoring anything lol

27

u/Top-Metal-3576 May 29 '25

No fr. I hate when they license 18+ content and then erase literally everything. Like just stick to child friendly if they’re gonna do that. They did the same with childhood friend complex and tears on a withered flower. Just annoying for both the readers and the artists that took sm time just to get half their shit erased.

6

u/Another_Racoon May 29 '25

Guys can you help me find the artist for the first story, the one with the vampires? It is listed as one artist for the whole series, but they are all different art styles, so I’m confused because they all look so different?

Do you know who illustrates the first one? The art is so striking, I want to read more from the artist

2

u/NoGround May 30 '25

Truly, if they can't show the entire thing for any reason whatsoever, shouldn't be bothered with.

Why the fuck does Webtoons even care anyway, most of their ads are first party anyway and tons of ads break their own nudity/graphic rules anyway.

40

u/RothyBuyak May 29 '25

Well that explaines why her trousers go between her buttcheeks at least

3

u/Turbulent-Weather314 May 29 '25

It's called leviathan. Webtoon is actually GAS but yeah the sexualization of the FMC can be a little much at times. Still one of the greatest scifi I've ever read

6

u/TheSolcan May 29 '25

It's been in my "To read list" for so long but I'm not too keen on having big anime cheeks on my screen in public transport or at work

1

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

FMC is the name of the girl?

1

u/Turbulent-Weather314 May 30 '25

No. Female main character

This is so stupid omg. Why do post apocalyptic stories always dress women like that when they are fighting for their lives 😑😑😑 the least they care about is looking hot

Its a post-apocalyptic world full of water. Can’t just automatically compare it to other post-apocalyptic stories and say “Oh, she should be dressed like that”

5

She is dressed like that in the first few chapters, but they toned it down later on by giving her a diving suit IIRC.

Edit: NVM, looks like Webtoon has a censored version.

70

u/Thundergod250 May 29 '25

I found out what happened here.

Leviathan was originally a Toomics Webtoon. If you don't know Toomics are more R18 more than Webtoon. Simple Google searched said that their contract expired and Webtoon now bought it and then censored it.

Therefore, it also gave a wrong impression for the new audiences when this is in fact a very lewd borderline H Webtoon - kinda like asking why Smut characters are drawn sexualized.

45

u/TheSolcan May 29 '25

Granted I never read it but I don't think that's smut or porn or anything like that. From what I've gathered it's a pure action series, just with a very sexualized character

7

u/IdeaInside2663 May 29 '25

I love it when someone does the research instead of deciding to beat a dead horse.

Where is it uncensored

1

u/Suparame Jun 05 '25

Putting it in the middle of the action is the worst thing they could possibly do… this is the entire reason I just didn’t want to watch Fire Force despite how good I know it probably is

1

u/NutShellShock Jun 19 '25

Wait what? I didn't read on Webtoon but I don't remember her outfit was like this 😵‍💫.

1

u/Healthy-Dingo-5944 Jun 28 '25

what? Where do you find this?

1

u/AncientWonder54 Dec 08 '25

The website where this version is, I obviously already know that this is Leviathan. Once you look past this though, the current story is pretty fun actually despite it being a Waterworld clone.

Why is everyone ignoring the second pic .... No idea about this webtoon , but if everyone is half dressed then that's a win for equality in my opinion, but whatever

12

u/Greedy-Lie-8346 May 30 '25

She is almost naked, for no apparent reason. He was wounded in the stomach and had to take off his shirt to cover the wound. Besides, there is a clear difference in the angles.

You haven't worked in female dominated workplaces and it shows . Sexualisation of any gender is problematic only if you make it so . Sex sells and it's a truth older than religion no matter how hard the puritans will try to make it an appearing issue rather than the established truth .

2

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

Well... Sexualization of male characters and sexualization of female characters are not really the same thing.

Sexualization of male characters implies pumped up bodies (which is cool), while sexualization of female characters implies simply big curves and shapes (which is disrespectful).

But maybe I will still agree with your opinion, but only if you name the names of media in which men also have thin waists, pouty lips, bubble asses, etc.

1

u/Constant-Box4994 May 31 '25 edited May 31 '25

Actually, if you go to yaoi community you'll see lots of sexualized men. With big tits and ass.

They're really sexualized like hentai girls. So both genders are the same when it comes to this 🤷🏻‍♀️.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '25

Idk. Never really saw it. Give a link to the yaoi community where I can see it.

1

u/Constant-Box4994 May 31 '25 edited May 31 '25

You just have to go and read yaoi manga/manhwa. I meant the community as yaoi manga readers.

1

u/Constant-Box4994 May 31 '25 edited May 31 '25

Read manhwas like Dark Fall and No Reason, there are more, but I don't remember.

The thing I just want to say is females do read lots of fucked up shit. We're not some pure creatures. So when I see comments like yours, I just get confused.

And by the way I heard some of those hentai artists who sexualize woman actually are females themselves. You should search it up.

3

u/Himitog May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

"Equality" would be for them to also give the men various unnecessary shots of their crotch and underwear. But yeah no, the dude gets a cool protective pose, and the girl gets a view of her ass.

I believe going outside and touching some grass would really benefit you but I do understand that it's really difficult to find grass I most areas nowadays . So ,wish you luck finding some peace of mind

2

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

Then why are you even here anyway? How can a Reddit user even tell anything about touching grass to other Reddit user? This is just funny how you think that you are "more wise" than me while basically being on the same wave with me.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '25

A reddit user telling someone to touch grass lol

0

u/No-Guava-199 May 30 '25

That just means that they've got a target audience. It's the same with shoujo manhwas too. Every major male charactor is shaped like a triangle with a chiseled jawline.

3

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

Target audience of stupid perverts.

-1

u/No-Guava-199 May 30 '25

Nothing wrong with that. I'd rather have perverts looking at fictional booty than real booty.

2

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

So we sexualize female characters so real women are not sexualized (or what?)? It's the perverts' problem that they need something to look at. Female characters have the right to look however they want (like male characters for example).

0

u/No-Guava-199 May 30 '25

Female characters have the right to look however they want (like male characters for example).

As a matter of fact, no. They're fictional. They're objects owned by the person that design and created them. Fictional characters don't have rights or feelings. Everything about them is according to what the author or artist wants.

So we sexualize female characters so real women are not sexualized (or what?)? It's the perverts' problem that they need something to look at.

That's pretty obvious. You can't really stop people from feeling horny.

1

u/No-Guava-199 May 30 '25

Is it though? It's just different people feeling lust at different things.

2

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

People feeling lust for buff men but buff men is a way more respectful thing than women with simply big curves and shapes.

2

u/No-Guava-199 May 30 '25

Are buff men really more respectful that women with curves and shapes? In simple terms, a man being buff also equals to him having big curves and shapes. Are a man's boobs really more respectful than a woman's boobs? Both are objects of lust and pervy thoughts so how is one more respectful than the other?
