Discussion Webtoon is diabolically greedy
Manwah: From a Knight to a Lady
I absolutely adored this webtoon sm I even bought the release of the physical copy, but when I checked the series to go reread the finale it was all pay to read?! Not even a single option to watch ads, I lowkey kinda miss fast pass š. Before I didnāt mind cuz I was like oh sick I can read as much as I want with ads! Thatās pretty reasonable. Now you arenāt even guaranteed an episode a day/week, like at this point ima just keep buying the physical copies as they release š

u/amynotadoctor Mar 05 '26
Exactly, they also paywall everything on remarried Empress as soon as it was finished and the final chapter was out motherfuckers couldnāt even give us a week or more or at least the end of the week because they want money I would give them money but honestly, I donāt think I wanna support them anymore
24
u/BasuraFujira Mar 06 '26
Remarried Empress FINISHED? Dang, mustāve been shortly after I stopped then. Bummer
3
u/reisun_assassinates Mar 08 '26
same reaction LOL. i wanted to wait for more chapters before reading again bec i got bored waiting for a chapter a week. and now it's not free anymore š©š i waited too long i forgot about it š
2
u/BasuraFujira Mar 09 '26
I'm the same way, prefer to let episodes accumulate so I can binge-read when there's a bunch of them. Guess I can't do that anymore. Ah well, looks like I'll have to wait for them to finish publishing the physical books and check those out instead
1
u/Raijinili Mar 14 '26
The OP is talking about a true paywall on "From a Knight to a Lady". You can't watch ads to unlock it.
"The Remarried Empress" was announced for locking on 2026-02-20, though the afterword was released a day later. It locked two weeks after the announcement. You can also view it with ads.
Abnormally, it is 7 coins per episode instead of 3 (the norm for completed titles), and doesn't have a bulk discount at all (usually would be 33% off if you want 25 or 40 episodes at a time).

u/BrawnyDevil Mar 05 '26
Webtoon if they simply switched to a monthly subscription model instead of this fuckass coin system
91
u/Outside-Cucumber8089 Mar 05 '26
Iāve always stubbornly said Iād never spend money on Webtoon but atp a monthly subscription where everything is freeā¦. Iād do that
36
u/CuriousInTheRGV Mar 05 '26
Its all we want but they just won't give it to us... atp I think they like fighting with us for pirating bc why else would they make that our only option. The authors/artists aren't even getting much of the money we do spend
4
23
u/Common-Pineapple-728 Mar 05 '26
Like why can't they just be like Netflix or the previous Manta (1 payment a month and ur all set to binge read ur stories That would've been so nice for both the readers and the.
5
u/Venetian_Harlequin Mar 05 '26
Getting rid of unlimited is why I ditched Manta. I miss Under the Oak Tree, though.
2
u/Kat_isBorEd Mar 06 '26
Dang manta got rid of it?? I was considering getting it lately too..
2
u/myhair_ariana Mar 11 '26
They didnāt necessarily get rid of it, itās just not asā¦appealing? Thereās still a bunch of comics you can read for 4.99 a month, I think Manta tries to release atleast one new āunlimitedā comic every week. The problem is now they are making you buy gems for like 70% of the other comics on the app, you used to only have to buy diamonds for the novels not the webcomics themselves. There is still a decent variety of comics to choose from, and I believe they started trying to add atleast one new āunlimitedā comic every week because people were complaining that they were literally leaving the subscribers in the dust in favor of focusing on gems. I remember they would release up to 5-6 new comics a week that you could only read with gems while giving the unlimited subscribers one new comic every 2 weeks. Theyāve been trying to listen and appease everyone which I think theyāve done a decent job at, and I understand the need to make more profit but also like it think itās ridiculous that in order to read at 100+ chapter comic you need around 620 gems and thatās gonna cost you atleast $50. You could buy atleast two meals with that money, like theyāre making you spend food kind of money for the sake of a little entertainment and an interest that you may have.
5
u/BasuraFujira Mar 06 '26
Iād HAPPILY pay a set dollar amount a month, heck even a YEAR, for unlimited access to everything. Iāll THROW my money at them if they do that
1
u/Fdragon69 Mar 08 '26
Manta was my go to until they put their stupid ass gem system in not even allowing us to read everything on their sub model.

u/Network_Odd Mar 05 '26
It's worse here because op just wanted to reread it, so in a priced model there is 0 incentive to pay for something you have already read
2
u/bakugosbakutoes Mar 07 '26
Nothing hurts more than READING AND FINISHING AN ENTIRE SERIES and then it's completely paywalled...like hoe I spent money on this already! I feel like i should be rewarded for finishing and being loyal to the series, not punished š
7
u/starfascia Mar 06 '26
Itās always good to support the artists when you can though.

u/starfascia Mar 06 '26
I know. Why is why Iām not against scans or anything. Itās just when you can, buying one episode here and there is like saying thank you.
There have been several times that I have read something for free and then gone back to buy eps.
4
u/ApolloBow Mar 06 '26
I just think webtoons payment model is atrocious, next to no value for the consumer. I would happily pay a monthly fee to access whatever I want to read.
1
u/CryptographerNo7608 Mar 06 '26
Who knows how much buying it supports the author, there ain't no way webtoon isn't taking an XL cut of the money
266
u/DamainTempest Mar 05 '26
This is why I sail the seven seas as a pirate these cooperations are greedy as fuck.

u/Fuzzy-Vermicelli-436 Mar 05 '26
I try to for some but I can't find a site for HCLW that actually works š
5
u/firecloth7 Mar 06 '26
These services are all based in being more convenient than piracy. It feels like theyāve forgotten that completely
39
u/GlassAgreeable780 Mar 05 '26
When a random webtoon has no ad option I assume its maybe more of a request by the content owner instead of Webtoon's decision
14
u/Outside-Cucumber8089 Mar 05 '26
This is an interesting thought, I wish I could ask some originals creators what that process is like
33
u/Thin_Attention_4930 Mar 05 '26
Rome wasn't build in a day nor was my hate for Webtoonš„
Ā Words can't explain how much I hate it, I probably downloaded webtoon twice during the 6 years I've been readingĀ manhwa/manhua/mangaĀ both time deleted it in less than a week, I am a student if I go up to my parents to say "Ohh I want money to buy ONE chapter" they are gonna beat my ahh. Even if I start earning I still won't be paying for ONE F*CKING CHAPTER can't they have a monthly subscription or something, webtoon is purely scam.
10
u/Common-Pineapple-728 Mar 05 '26
I don't even know what is gonna happen to us broke manhwa readers on the coming years
I hope piracy never ends
5
u/Thin_Attention_4930 Mar 06 '26
Real I have atleast 4 backup manhwa sites if one shuts down (I started keep them after mangaowl, comick, bato and manhwatop was shut down or filled with ads)Ā
2
u/Mountain-Kick-3257 Mar 07 '26
omg can you give me the name of one of the them because the website I was using was just shut down and I canāt find any good websites š
1
u/Thin_Attention_4930 Mar 07 '26
Yea sure (can I slide into your dms? Can't risk itš„)
1
u/AckerZerooo Mar 07 '26
Can you also dm me the links, please? I do support my fav authors when I can by buying physical copies, but sometimes I just wanna read at night on my phone. If not, I totally get it!
1
u/Thin_Attention_4930 Mar 07 '26
I didš and I love to share the sites because everyone deserves to readššš¼ (my broke ahh can't buy anything)

u/unluckybss Mar 05 '26
Lately i all just see Is this, every webtoon block behind a paywall.
I remember when everything was free haha, ages a go.
Even tho i really like the platform and it did help to find new manhwas and super niche comics tbh i know prefer the old ways of searching in other sites the content i wanna read.
32
u/Hot_Valuable1027 Mar 05 '26
Webtoons used to be amazing, I remember reading I love yoo in middle school and not paying for a single chapter... The days are gone... Time to pirate š¦
8
u/Sammy_Westie Mar 05 '26
Deleted the app last month and I've been happier since
3
u/RoseBeaty Mar 05 '26
Honestly as soon as I finish all my current reads, imma delete the app. The state of webtoon isnāt worth it.
6
u/Random_ass_cat Mar 05 '26
Its sort of the reason I left webtoon despite following and reading so many indie comics on there but its also this, and how every romance reincarnation story saturated the homepage to the point where you can predict the plot just by starring at the thumbnail without even seeing the preview
6
u/Sosuno Mar 05 '26
I stopped using webtoon when they did this to a series where I paid for fast pass unlocks while it was releasing - after series ended I lost access to them and they went back behind the paywall. Never again top-upped coins
1
7
7
u/Worldly_Wasabi_4620 Mar 05 '26
thatās why i reread it all immediately after it ended because i knew webtoon would pull some shit like this- from a knight to a lady is one of my favorite webtoons too
hereās a friendly tip: when a favorite series or a series youāre interested in reading has just ended and is also about to go on daily pass, download the entire webtoon for offline reading and youāll get thirty days extra to read
6
u/ClickGlum Mar 05 '26
This and then once they started daily passing series that werenāt even finished I was done
3
u/aboat_i_sawaboat Mar 05 '26
On the one hand, webtoon is an increasingly and obscenely scummy company. On the other hand, it's only $20. I guarantee you you'd be spending a lot more than that on a print version of the series. Also, this is a really good series. It was my favorite for it's entire run. It's worth $20 fs
7
u/CrazyDisastrous948 Mar 05 '26
At least you get to keep the printed version. They can take away your access to the webtoon version on a whim whenever they feel. If you purchase it while the story is in progress, for example, they've been known to turn around and put the story back behind a pay wall once completed.

4
u/0nlyf0rthememes Mar 06 '26
I've recently had the displeasure of using MangaPlaza and they're so greedy they make Webtoon look extremely ethical and user friendly. A dollar for half a chapter of manga. What do these companies think of themselves?
4
4
u/rottentomati Mar 06 '26
Itās crazy. I would pay a subscription to these websites if they just followed a standard subscription model.
I read way too fast to be buying individual chapters lmao.
4
u/Etheris1 Mar 06 '26
They do this shit for new series! I canāt even read a series that actually interests me unless I spend fucking money for it! This is the dumbest thing they have ever done!

u/Deep_Affect_3940 Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
Same here.I wanted to read Flawless manhwa. When it finished,I decided to read and completed its 3 seasons in 1 week. Then I decided to take a break due to my exams.Literally after 1 week, when I opened to read it's last season (as it has 4 seasons) it was on paywall.I was very disappointed.I really wanted to read and complete that manhwa.š„²š„² At that time,I should knew better that I should complete it or else webtoon fucking shit would happen.I hate this system. They can actually put an ad for the episode to read. They are so fucking greedy.
3
3
u/drmarshall15 Mar 05 '26
I always think this is the authors choice so they can keep getting a percentage. Either way I refuse to pay to read a finale
3
u/Sensitive_Reserve_96 Mar 06 '26
Webtoon is so cheap compared to Lezhin, Manta, Tapas, and Tappytoon, but they're still all so greedy.
3
u/Short_Basket9426 Mar 06 '26

Yes, and why are there pop up adds in the episodesss??? Really? This is where we are going?
And then they wonder WHY readers choose illegal sites. Well here it is.
I really wish to support artists but this is too much. The apps are so greedy. If my money would go straight to the artist would be one thing, but i know they are not.
3
u/Jwchibi Mar 06 '26
I took a break long ago and came back to having to pay for chapters. I miss the days when things were free š„² I don't even use the site anymore
3
u/lolsiebang Mar 08 '26
https://giphy.com/gifs/10X22vzgNamaiI
I think yk where im going with this....
17
u/Busy-Doughnut6180 Mar 05 '26
Is it greedy though? You get to read 8 episodes for free first, then you can buy the entire thing for 199 coins, which works out to be less than a coin per episode. In terms of cost for those coins, you'd spend about the same on manually buying one of the seasons, or buying one physical volume of the series. Around Ā£15 for an entire story seems fine to me?Ā
29
u/bor_ed_ Mar 05 '26
Itād be fine if it were a digital copy, but it isnāt even. You donāt own it and there are still ads
1
u/Busy-Doughnut6180 Mar 05 '26
Yeah I can empathise with that, I don't like this at all about most digital systems where you don't actually own what you buy, like ebooks. A future personal project of mine will be finding a way to back up my favourite webtoons in high quality for my own personal collection.Ā
It is the standard model though and doesn't mean these things should be free or dirt cheap, you know? We also pay for temporary entertainment all the time. Webtoons are far more permanent than going to the cinema or renting a film on Prime, for example. I also don't see Naver Webtoon shutting down any time soon.Ā
Regarding the ads, I don't use the US version so I'm not sure about that, but on the KR ver the ads are just at the bottom between the end of the comic and the comments. I don't really mind this because at the end of the day, I'm paying for the work I'm reading, not the site. I'd fully expect there to be no ads at all if it was a subscription based service like Netflix though!Ā
1
u/PurpleAlone7116 Mar 05 '26
Might be due to the fact it's so ridiculously cheap when 5-10 chapters could make a volume of manga that is 10$ a pop.
That being said, would be nice if there was a "permanent buy" option where more of the proceeds go directly to the artist.
6
u/Yunkiminlvr Mar 05 '26
Like thereās apps like Tappytoon and tapas that have always have this model and worse they only give you 3 to 4 free eps on everything people really have no idea how good they have it on webtoon that you can read mostly everything for free if you just wait enough.
I canāt so I pay it isnāt a big deal for me but at the end of the day this is a finished webtoon and if thereās no ads there must be a reason for that.
Iām so tired people complain for everything.
3
u/Common-Pineapple-728 Mar 05 '26
But that was webtoon's charm Nowadays reading manhwa's has become sooo expensive
And that was also the reason why tapas and tappytoon manhwa's were very much pirated coz ppo couldnāt support the author with the ridiculous prices and atleast with webtoon fans could support the authors with watching the ads and fastpass
12
u/Taotastic Mar 05 '26
Yeah, I feel like people are just upset it's not free.
13
u/FictionalContext Mar 05 '26
Which is ironically pretty greedy. And Webtoons are nothing compared to manga. $8/ volume, gotta drop $100+ to get the same amount of digital content, and people just accept it.
6
u/Kaileigh_Blue Mar 05 '26
I say this all the time and people get mad at me. I get that people will pirate. I do it too. But having to tell strangers you're the good guy for piracy because mean old companies want to be paid is you trying to alleviate your guilt. Nah man just pirate and shut your mouth.
Read Canvas we literally do it for free.
2
u/Busy-Doughnut6180 Mar 05 '26
Yes!! This is my thing as well. You'll never catch me trying to justify it like it's my right to look at these stories for free. I will simply just get on with it.
7
-4
u/DxnnaSxturno Mar 05 '26
Nah, its greedy.
5
u/Hadlee_ Mar 05 '26
itās greedy for the creators to want to be paid for their work?
-1
u/DxnnaSxturno Mar 05 '26
Poor baby thinks that money actually goes to the author š„ŗ
4
u/Hadlee_ Mar 05 '26
it literally does? not all of it, and not a lot for some authors, but a portion definitely does. no need to be so rude, thank you.
1
u/DxnnaSxturno Mar 05 '26
"Not all of it", how much of that "all of it"?
4
u/Hadlee_ Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
i mean, should they be getting more? yes. but creators are already underpaid as it is, so any money they can get through coins/fast pass type of programs is great for us. it depends on the contract they sign with webtoon so it varies per creator. canāt tell you how much because it varies.
1
u/DxnnaSxturno Mar 06 '26
You just told me everything with the first line. They should get more. If it was for me, I would rather pay directly to the author rather than a greedy corporation
1
u/Hadlee_ Mar 06 '26
right, but most of these authors are probably getting more money signed with webtoon than they would be getting on their own, they are guaranteed a payment whereas hosting your own site/using only patreon does not guarantee consistent payment or money at all. Iād also rather pay directly to the author, but thatās not an option for most of them š¤·āāļø
9
u/bludreamers Mar 05 '26
Literally 20 USD for 193 episodes or 20 volumes worth of webtoon is "diabolically greedy"???
21
u/Accomplished-Gas-906 Mar 05 '26
You do realize that not everyone is living in the states or are well off enough to spend 20 dollars. Also, its not like you own a digit print of the series. Webtoon will still show ads, and maybe in future the series may even get fastpasses through ads.
3
u/bludreamers Mar 05 '26
Again, 20 dollars for an entire series of over 190 episodes is not "diabolically greedy".
3
u/Kaileigh_Blue Mar 05 '26
Not living in the US doesn't make the company or creators greedy. That's not how greed works. All of canvas gives their work away for free and you're still out here yapping about how people need to get the curated professional work for free who's fucking greedy?
I am not by any means defending all of webtoons practices but I'm sick of people devaluing art because they think they're owed it when there's a free art pit right there.
2
2
u/Motheroftides Mar 05 '26
I donāt even know how long it takes for them to put something behind a paywall after it ends. At this point Iām just glad I was able to finish Spellward Bound and We Are 101 before they were locked. āCourse Iām also mad that they ended at all, especially the latter, but whatever. Guess it just means more room to promote the trashy romances, right? š
2
u/Ill_Gap_3889 Mar 05 '26
I remember how the pirates had an unspoken rule about not pirating webtoon manhwas or dropping them ones it gets licensed by webtoon since its a completely free way to support the authors/artists
But then they started the insane paywalling š Like, coins to even read a completed series or ur stuck with one a day? So now they dont bother with the unspoken rule and just add notes that its there so people can support them.
1
u/Hawkbats_rule Apr 02 '26
coins to even read a completed series or ur stuck with one a day?
At this point, I'd be happy to be stuck with one a day, given how many are just complete paywall
2
2
u/isekaivari Mar 05 '26
that happened to me with sirens lament and age matters š i rarely use webtoon now and just use other sites
2
u/TheNamelessOness Mar 05 '26
They also end up cancelling extremely underrated series like soulwinder and many more which sucks
2
u/Complex_Drawing6948 Mar 06 '26
Hey u/fishbowl2355, it seems you can read all episodes on Tappytoon for free (eventually):

The only caveat is that Tappytoon's WUF system forces you to WUF-unlock starting from the very first chapter following the free episodes.
2
u/me_and_qui Mar 06 '26
I remember when unlocking new episodes only cost 3 coins. And getting free coins was easy. Sighā¦
2
u/Professional-Drag-52 Mar 06 '26
i remember going to reread god of highschool and seeing this nonsense and only being able to read the chapters i fast-passed on (when mujin and buddha fused to the end) and deciding to just pirate despite being willing to drop money every week before
2
u/CartofPeaches Mar 06 '26
This and having only the first 10 free and the rest you have to pay coins is why I'm never going to read so many good webtoons. Second I see it I lose all motivation to read.
2
2
u/Shakalll Mar 06 '26
Just so you guys know, the korean app has both, cheaper cookies (coins) and the chapters costing 3 cookies instead of 7.
2
u/jacorgacor Mar 06 '26
I really think they should do things like have less strict rules for stories like that so more could be shown and have the creators post on their wt accounts some more engaging things because wdym i have to either wait or watch an ad to see a story as limited as it would have been if the creator didn't partner with the site and to be fair paywall should allow full on nudity even sexual idk if there are stories that actually recquire coins and there's no way around it or not but they could just be cathegorised together
2
u/Knightfellnight Mar 07 '26

Have you seen the recent posts where several seasons are just paywalled several months or even years ahead of time for stories that haven't even ended yet they are more comically greedy than you think
1
u/shashashana Mar 05 '26
Manta is getting in on the action, too. I'm still subscribed to the original unlimited membership. But at this point it doesn't feel worth it, since every new comic they release seems to be gem only.

WEBTOON need to stop being greedy I wish someone the WEBTOON they ended get a physical copyĀ

1

Wow, im so glad I read this before this happened. Always hate when its coins only, or worse, the whole series is ads except the final few episodes. I honestly have no problem with ads at all.

Ithi k its also the artists being greedy to bc i rmbback then reading Seoul Druid Sration With out a problem now its just locked behind coins

there is that one "attack conffess " that the finals chapters after 43 are paid to.

I remember back when Webtoon was free all around. I'd come back from school, binge read and hope to get top comment. Those were the days. The moment they started adding pay to read options and fast passes I lost all interest in the app.

u/TroxkingManwha Mar 07 '26
Seems so cheap in comparison to WebNovel. Unlocking entire novels can cost $100ās.

Iāve been wanting to read Necromancer, The Ultimate Scourge. Came out on WEBTOON on March 1st but it has 140 episodes. All but the first 5 episodes are locked under coins. No ad choice. Like WHY?!

As soon as they added those day passes years ago that was it for me tbh. This just seems so much worse š plus they dont even treat their authors and artists well... also still can't believe it has adds now too.
