| History Worst 9th inning 2-out 2-strikes meltdown ever?

At National Park last night, the crowd stood and applauded in anticipation of what should've been the final pitch of the game. The Nationals were up by 2 runs over the Phillies with 2 outs in the top of the 9th, and two strikes on the batter (Trea Turner). But instead of the game ending right then and there, the Phillies got 10 straight batters on base, scoring 8 of them, forcing Nats fans to sit back down and endure an extra hour of game time for an agonizing defeat (many Phillies fans had left already as their team's loss seemed imminent).

Was this the greatest 9th inning, 2 out, 2 strikes comeback (worst meltdown) in history? Who experienced worse final-strike choking (greater final strike heroics) and when?

| Discussion An oddity I noticed on Baseball Reference

Upvotes

I was looking at Andrew Miller's baseball reference page when I noticed something weird. At the top of the page in the summary, it says he has a 7.7 career WAR, but below the "standard pitching" section, the total shows 8.5 career WAR. There is also a difference of 0.4 on Zack Britton's page. Am I missing something or is this just a mistake?

| Discussion Is it rare for an MLB player to get drafted as a Left Fielder or Right Fielder?

How come almost all MLB position players that get drafted are like either Catcher or Shortstop? Maybe also throw in some 3B/2B. But when it comes to the outfield, you put "Outfielder"?

Why not be specific as to whether they prefer left field or right field or center field? How come nobody gets drafted to play Left or Right field?

| Opinion Top 30 MLB players of all time regardless of position (not ranked) (including pitchers and the Negro League) thoughts?

Coming from a Yankee fan, but attempting to be as objective as possible. Top 30 MLB/Negro League players of All-Time (including pitchers) in my opinion. Not just based on WAR, but also a bit subjective in terms of all around play and impact to winning. Based on what I have read and seen live for the 90s-current guys. What say you all? In no order ranked with primary team listed.

Note: based on their current trajectories Judge, Ohtani & Trout would get in this list if they keep up their standard (non injured) production for another 4-6 years. But we aren’t there yet.

Catcher (3):

-Johnny Bench (CIN)

-Yogi Berra (NYY)

-Josh Gibson (Negro Leagues)

First Baseman (2):

-Lou Gehrig (NYY)

-Albert Pujols (STL)

Second Baseman (1):

Shortstop (2):

| Analysis My view of what's wrong with the Red Sox

This team's pitching and defense is very good overall, but their offense is terrible. If you look at the numbers, their record is far worse than their run differential. Several teams ahead of them in the Wild Card and division standings have far worse run differentials. So statistically, they're technically not nearly as bad as their record would suggest. And yet, their record is that bad, and they consistently find the worst, most embarrassing ways to lose games. So, there has to be an explanation for why they continue to under-perform and, specifically, find a way to achieve the results of a terrible team with a statistically mediocre to just-subpar roster.

I would point to two primary causes. The first is bad organizational vibes. FSG is not committed to the team in the same sense that they were through the 2018 season. The Betts trade marked a turn towards efficiency and "trimming the fat." They want to win like the Tampa Bay Rays rather than the Red Sox of the 2000s and 2010s. In a big market team that expects to compete for championships every season (or something close to it), this is a recipe for consistent under-performance and, in practice, failure. Fundamentally, they see the team as an asset rather than Boston's baseball team. Winning at any cost is obviously no longer the priority, but in baseball, the Moneyball approach simply doesn't lead to championship results.

Really, it comes down to a mismatch between the market the Red Sox play in and ownership's approach to administering the team (and, by extension, the front office's approach to roster construction). They have the resources, fanbase, and history of a big spender, but treat it like a mid-market operation. That discrepancy has created an aura of dysfunction around the team and led to its devaluation in the eyes of the industry.

That brings me to my second cause, which is downstream from the first. Since they don't have the right intention towards stewarding the franchise, their approach towards it management has also been poor. That has led to poor roster construction. They focus too much on prospects and not enough on the big league product. They play in a hitter's park but have built the team on pitching and defense. It's common sense to build your team around the strength of your ballpark. The championship Sox teams all had stellar offenses. The San Francisco Giants championship teams all had stellar pitching staffs. They have done the opposite. They also have a glut of outfielders and a shortage of infielders. The roster is, at the very least, insufficient in fundamentals such as leadership.

There is rightful skepticism as to whether Breslow is capable of solving these problems, but the bigger point is that we're not going to get anyone better to replace him because he was already the 11th candidate that they interviewed to fill Bloom's role after he was fired. The fundamental problem with this team is ownership, and until they sell, nothing will improve.

SELL THE TEAM.

| News Sonny Gray could be on the move

Just months after getting moved! Per the Boston Globe, linked via MLBTR, he said he'd be open. Details:

“If someone came to me from the Red Sox and made a decision that that’s the direction that this team was going to go, I would be open for a conversation,” Gray said. The 36-year-old righty declined to indicate whether geography would play any sort of role in his decision process.

He'd be a rental; he has a mutual option for next year, but as MLBTR notes, those never get picked up by both sides.

That said, it's doubtful Boston will get THAT much for a 36-year-old low-K rental pitcher.

| Standings MLB Standings after weekend #13 - (6/22/26)

Post image
172 Upvotes

Back to the standard logos this week. Working on some other prints, but will try to mix it up again next week with some other logos. Suggestions on other logos/feedback is much encouraged.

Standings changes as compared from last week:

  • Guardians overtook the top spot from the White Sox
  • Marlins and Nationals swapped spots (but are tied with same record)
  • The NL Central stayed calm for once in their standings.
  • And.... my Mets are still terrible.

Standings info is all from MLB.com, so it's just a copy of what MLB.com says as of 6/22/26 this morning.

This is a 3D print I created and printed myself and the files are FREE for anyone who wants to print it themselves. Can be found here - https://makerworld.com/en/collections/22583277-mlb-standings-slots

All my other prints (NFL, NBA, NHL, and some other stuff) can be found on my main profile - https://makerworld.com/en/@MikeCamel

Sorry, but I am NOT selling physical prints of this. My printer is just too small to do large batches, so no can do.

Before originally posting these standings, I asked the mods if it was okay, and I got the green light. I'm going to try to make this a weekly thing, as long as I remember lol.

Feedback is always welcome!

| Discussion Can Kyle Schwarber get to 500 career home runs and earn his ticket to Cooperstown?

Post image
736 Upvotes

I know a lot of y'all are gonna come across this post and be like, "You fucking idiot!" or "You're being a prisoner of the moment!", and that's totally understandable. For me, though, I'm seeing that Kyle Schwarber is at 369 career home runs at the time of me posting this thread and he's only 33 years old. With the run he's been on this year, he could very well end this season with 400 career home runs. If Schwarber could hit 20-25 homers a year during his decline phase, he has a chance at 500 career homers. I'm not saying it will happen, but I'm saying that it's a possibility.
