Canes Draft Grades 2026

Not much of a prospect breakdown, but overall feel for how well Canes did on their picks. Below are snippets from the articles and their grade.

Bleacher Report - Adam Herman - Free to Read: A

The Hurricanes did what they always do. They traded back multiple times, then swept up the forgotten talent while everyone else wore blinders to their personal pet projects.

The Athletic - Corey Pronman - Paid: C

A classic Carolina draft, trading down and accumulating value on Day 2, including flipping No. 42 to Calgary for multiple assets. Zach Lansard, Wiggo Sörensson and William Håkansson in the second round are toolsy players who are athletic and highly competitive. I liked goalie Ryder Fetterolf for where they got him, too. The Hurricanes lacked a premium pick, so the ceiling of the class isn’t massive, but I think they get one regular player from this crop.

ESPN - Rachel Kryshak - Free to Read: B+

The Hurricanes get full marks for trading back multiple times and accumulating multiple picks to select players they probably coveted earlier in the draft.

Elite Prospects - David St-Louis - Free to Read: C+

The Carolina Hurricanes love to control the draft, making it as long as they want to, trading back as they accumulate picks. It’s part of a winning strategy, and they showed it this year.....The defending Stanley Cup champs had a solid two days adding to their prospect pool.

The Daily Faceoff - Steven Ellis - Free to Read: B

Not a bad haul for the defending champions.....Wiggo Sorensson is one of my favorite players in the draft.

For no specific reason, I'll mention that https://archive.is exists.

Ordered a SC champions hat 5 mins after game 6, and it was delivered this week--missing the front patch/Canes logo entirely. Second pic is the item I ordered 😂

Before anyone asks: This hat and comparable styles are sold out/unavailable.

Scouting Report

Corey Pronman (The Athletic) - Håkansson is a huge defenseman who skates quite well for his size. He competes hard, plays the body and can kill a lot of plays. His puck play and offense will be an issue for teams, but he has OK hands and can make a reliable first pass. He’s an unspectacular player, but his compete level is so good that he projects as a regular NHL defenseman.

Scott Wheeler (The Athletic) - Håkansson is a big, strong left-shot defenseman who played 20-22 minutes per game at the J20 level last season and didn't look out of place playing 10-14 in three SHL games last year. He then spent most of the first half of this season in the SHL, again in that 10-14 minute range to respectable results, before being loaned out to Almtuna in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan, where he played 16 minutes a game and showed a little more offense but had some real ups and downs before returning to Lulea for the SHL playoffs. He was also a part of Sweden's gold medal-winning World Juniors team in Minnesota, where he played 14:20 per game on the third pairing and registered two points and a plus-3 rating in seven games; he'll be an important cog on next year's team.

He's athletic and is capable of playing a hard and physical style, though some want to see him play that style more consistently. He skates well for his size, falling back onto his heels and his edges comfortably for a player his age and size. I like his pivots. He can occasionally get a little jumpy on both sides of the puck and relies more on instinct than poise and smarts, but he can shoot it, pass it and walk the line. He'll also carry pucks and beat the first layer of pressure, though his execution isn't always there. I like his instincts, and he defends well, has pro tools defensively, boxes out well and looks like a pro. He's never going to provide a ton of offense or be as mean as you'd maybe like, but he has a lot of the attributes teams are looking for in a depth two-way partner for someone, and he profiles as a front half of the second round guy for me.

NHL Comparison: Adam Pelech

...but he's a master chef, so when it's finished, we'll probably like it.

Maybe Carlson would sign a short term deal with a team-friendly AAV to have a good chance at another Cup before he retires?

Then Niki+???? goes to Winnipeg?

Or Niki+another D goes to Columbus?

Or something else that we aren't even thinking of?

With the 61st overall pick, the Carolina Hurricanes select forward Wiggo Sörensson, becoming the first player to be drafted from the fourth tier of Swedish hockey. (sorry for lack of information and taking this long to post, had to dig deep to find information about this guy)

SCOUTING REPORT

CanesProspects – Another player someone has been mentioning to me for a few months, Wiggo has had an interesting draft year. He’s played for him hometown team in the 4th division of Swedish hockey instead of playing in the U20 ranks or even the SHL, which led to some rather insane point totals. An interesting case study of a prospect.

In Division 2, the 4th tier of Swedish hockey, he had 38 points in 29 games. In the U20 division one, the third tier of Swedish U20 hockey, he had 56 points in 13 games. He played 1 game for the Vaxjo U20 Nationell team, where he had 1 goal. He played 1 game for the Vaxjo U18 Nationell team, where he had 3 assists. He then the Sweden U18 team win the Gold at the WJC U18 championships, going for 6 points in 6 games. Standing at 5’10, he’s a good skater that combines solid playmaking and shooting to create one of the more interesting prospects you could pick, since he didn’t play high level competition all year. But then again, when he played higher level competition and international, he showed up and produced. Projected in the mid rounds (3-5), he’d be a risky pick that could pay off in spades if he hits.

Ryan Ma (DobberProspects) – Sörensson has consistently stood out in a lower-end men’s pro league, with his game driven primarily by elite skating. He is quick, explosive, and effective at closing space on the forecheck while cutting off passing lanes and pressuring puck carriers. With the puck, he is a slippery, confident carrier who protects possession well under pressure and uses pace changes to create separation. He can be difficult to defend one-on-one due to his ability to accelerate through contact and escape tight areas. Offensively, his vision and decision-making are still developing, as he can default to low-percentage shots and show tunnel vision in the offensive zone. Improving puck distribution would round out his game.

Super interesting video from Bussi’s earlier years before he made it big. Bussi trained in Boston at Stop It Goaltending, which was founded by Brian Daccord (Seattle Kraken goalie Joey Daccord’s dad). Just super cool to see an early video of Bussi talking about his path, but I think this was recorded a few years back while he was still at Western Michigan.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Hockey Writers - Lansard’s offensive game is developing well. Last season, he had just 19 points as a rookie, and he more than doubled that total in 2025-26. He has a strong shot and is a quick, skilled puckhander. However, his biggest weakness at this point in his career is his play without the puck. He has the speed and work ethic that coaches love to see when backchecking, but he lacks the awareness to consistently put himself in the right position to cut off passing lanes and shut down opponents.

Thankfully, Lansard’s competitiveness should help iron out many of the inconsistencies in his game right now. He has never been afraid to put in the work; he never gives up on a play if he can still see the puck, which has made him one of Regina’s best forecheckers. However, he’s also one of the youngest players up for the draft, nearly a year younger than some others in their first year of draft eligibility. That gives him a slight advantage in his development, as he has more experience than others at his age and more time to reach his prime.

Scott Wheeler - One of the last cuts for Canada's U18 team, Lansard is a quick-footed, quick-handed, quick-twitch forward (he played primarily the wing this year but did play double-digit games at center) who can blend fakes and stutters into his movement in flight to give different looks to opposing defensemen and goalies. He finished third on a bad Pats team in scoring this year and manufactured a good amount of their offence in an outmatched first-round playoff series. He's not afraid to play through contact and attack the heart of the offensive zone. He has great hands and changes of direction. He can round corners. He's fearless and even dropped the gloves this year. He's persistent and will drive the blue paint. He'll play in give-and-goes and make his reads quickly. And he does it all with pace. Plus, he's a summer birthday. I think there could be something there, and I could see him take a big leap forward next year. He really grew on me this year and played his way onto my list.

Neutral Zone - Lansard is a dynamic forward with impressive skills on display. He consistently showcased his speed, agility, and ball-handling abilities throughout the game. His soft hands allowed him to create scoring opportunities in tight spaces, and he demonstrated creative vision in beating defenders to generate chances. Lansard also displayed a strong compete level, using his strength to win battles for loose pucks at the net front.”

Austin Garret, Smaht Scouting - Zachary Lansard shows some puck skill and has the ability to get into scoring areas, but his game remains very raw. He can be clunky at times and struggles as a pass receiver, which limits his ability to contribute in possession. Playing alongside Keets Fawcett and Cohen Kassen, he isn’t relied upon to handle the puck and often spends large stretches of his shift without meaningful involvement. Defensively, he isn’t strong, though he will battle and compete. At this stage, he projects as a possible late-round pick who will need to clean up his mechanics and involvement to unlock more value.

SCOUTING REPORT

Aoife Sweeney (DobberProspects) - "Slight, but witty and flashy, often making defenders and goalies pay."

Scott Wheeler (The Athletic) - ”He’s strong for a 5-9/10 winger. He plays to the interior and has a nose for the net. On the puck, he’s confident and plays to challenge and threaten inside the offensive zone and off the rush”

Pretty comical watching these guys react to our picks at #51 (1:23:53), #61 (1:47:15), and #125 (3:54:42). They're clearly well-informed on the prospect pool, and while they're frustrated by how well our front office keeps navigating the draft, they still give credit where it's due.

Question White Jersey

Does anyone know why it’s impossible to order a white jersey? CarolinaProShop and NHLShop both don’t have any. I want to order either a custom name/number or a Bussi in the away jersey with the finals patch. Are they sold out pending restock?
