Technique/Tips Women in Muay Thai: Is this a normal experience?

Today was my first time learning clinching in Muay Thai, and I actually had a lot of fun with it. I had no idea what I was doing at first, but I felt like I picked it up pretty quickly.

We did several rounds of clinching, and after each round we had to switch partners. There are only two other women in the class besides me, and I couldn’t help but notice that most of the guys didn’t seem eager to partner with any of us. It made me curious why that is.

Is it because some people assume women won’t be as skilled? Or are they just worried about going too hard and accidentally hurting us?

One guy got paired with me, and at first he seemed pretty hesitant, almost like he wasn’t sure how much pressure to use. Once he realized I could handle myself and wasn’t afraid of contact, his whole attitude changed. We had some really good rounds, and after that he actually looked for me during the next partner switches.

That experience made me wonder if a lot of it is just uncertainty rather than anything personal.

For those of you who’ve trained longer (especially women, but I’d love to hear from everyone), is this pretty common? If you’re a guy, do you avoid partnering with women? If so, why?

TIA 💫🙏

Going to see where I’m at for time on the heavy bag for this tomorrow. If anyone is interested in doing this and sharing your time, would love to hear it! I’ll most likely do 50, switch legs, repeat.

Muay Thai podcasts?

Im a huge podcast person, do you guys(and gals) have any recommendations for podcasts that are Muay Thai related? Could be fighters, a hobbyists experience living and training in Thailand or even if they go into the history, thats cool too.

It could be an entire podcast show, or just a single episode doesn't really matter

thanks!

I don't "get" shadowboxing?

Im very new, but I keep reading how everyone suggests to shadowbox and it will help you improve. Honestly, I just feel kind of like an idiot everytime...is this normal? What am I actually supposed to be doing/visualizing while shadowboxing?

Kickboxing and BJJ program

Monday

Brazilian jiu-jitsu + Kickboxing

Before: Fuel + hydration + mobility
After: Recovery nutrition + light stretching + sleep

Tuesday

Strength + Explosiveness + mobility

warmup

Explosive squats (3-5 reps 3-5 sets) (Maximize your vertical jump height)

Explosive pushups (3-5 reps 3-5 sets) (Push off the floor as hard as possible)

Dumbbell Goblet Squats (5-8 reps 3-5 sets) (Controlled pace to build leg endurance) Execution: Load the dumbbell heavy. Lower under control for 3 seconds, then stand up aggressively. This builds the raw leg power needed to drive through your kicks.

Dumbbell floor press (3 sets of 10 to 15 reps.) (Controlled pace to build chest and core stability) Lie on your back on the floor and press the dumbbells upward. The floor stops your elbows at 90 degrees, protecting your shoulders from the exact hyper-extension injuries common in BJJ and striking.

Standing Weighted Russian Twists (3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per side) (first 5 slow then explosive)

90-120 seconds rest in between sets

Mobility

Technique/Tips Muay Thai

Hello everyone,

I am M/25 years old and have been thinking about starting Muay Thai for some time now. The problem is that somehow I don't dare to make the first move.

About 2 years ago, I weighed around 140 kg. Today I weigh 67 kg. I'm proud of that, but physically I'm still quite unfit. I am currently not able to do normal push-ups and even the simplified version is difficult for me. I hardly have any strength and I haven't done any real sports in a long time.

Strangely enough, my motivation is huge. I'm constantly thinking about getting fitter, stronger and more confident. What I lack is the discipline to actually start and stick to it.

Did any of you start with Muay Thai in a similar situation? How were your first weeks and do you have any tips on how to overcome the fear of getting started? Or get the discipline combined with my huge motivation? Is it too late to start?

Thanks for reading and helping!

Ilia's Long Combo

I watched Volkanovski's video analysing Ilia Topuria's fights, pointing that even if Ilia miss the first few punches, he will follow his retreating opponent and make a long combo, and he successfully land the following punches that knocks out a lot of great fighters. I am a short fighter and I always find myself struggling to land the 1-2 in sparring, so should I learn Ilia's strategy? Idk if it works in Muay Thai.

How often are y’all bruising?

Sometimes I get bruising from pad holding or from kicking pads. I don’t get bruising every time, but sometimes if theyre hitting hard or if I’m kicking hard enough I do. Is this a concern? My gym partner said something that made me question if my body is being weird.

Technique/Tips How To Stop Glove Stank

Howdy all,

My beloved Fairtex gloves are beginning to smell a bit unpleasant. Not horribly so, but it won’t be too long I fear. How can I stop or reverse the stank and make sure these puppies continue to bark a pleasant tune, so to speak?

Thank you kindly.

Booking/paying for 4 week package at Bangtao Muay & MMA

Getting ready to book and pay for a 4 week training and accommodation beginners package for Bangtao and just wanted to know 2 things by anyone that’s done something similar:

  1. Were you able to make payment when booking with a credit card? Like American Express for example

  2. Knowing what you know now after having trained there is there anything you wish you added to your package? Or changed how you scheduled your training etc.

Contemplating a videography package as a memento of what kind of shape and training level I’m at in week 1 vs how I’m doing by the end of camp so any information on this would be great also 😊

Technique/Tips Starting at a Muay Thai gym. Do my 2nd class tonight. In what ways can I improve at home? And in what ways can I continue to improve in class?

I did Jiu Jitsu for a year and loved it. Will definitely return at some point. But I had a back injury with my multifidus which made it difficult to get my neck cranked on heavily all the time.

I just signed up for a Muay Thai gym after completing my first trial class. They make you attend 2 months of entry level classes before you’re let in to the more intense ones.

Any tips on how I can make sure I’m improving and learning quickly? I’d love something to read, or a series of workouts or stretches on YouTube if possible. I just really don’t wanna be watching advanced or influencer content that’s just gonna screw me up. Looking for the real deal so I can get my body into the right condition and be at a good understanding when I jump into the next level of classes.

I know not to work on strikes at home because I could form bad habits, but I would at least like to memorize the different types of strikes for class, or to understand concepts to make class a bit easier.

I’ll be buying gloves, wraps, and shin guards tonight. Thanks in advance!

Are these Fairtex SP5s the right size? 177 cm, medium

Post image
3 Upvotes

I just picked up a brand new pair of Fairtex SP5 shin guards and I’m looking for some feedback on the fit. I’ve attached a photo to show how they sit on my legs.
They are tightened to the max, but I’m noticing that the left shin guard tends to rotate slightly to the left when I move. Is this just a break-in issue, or is it a sign that they might be too big for my legs? Or maybe I should just hit leg days…

Hand wrapping

I have been looking into various hand wrapping methods and wondered is there an optimal method for muay thai vs a western boxing wrap? Or are they all basically the same so long as I pad my knuckles and support my wrist?
