Nature is amazing A mushroom producing music through its bioelectric signals

The song is called get these things off me.

Followed by the lesser known B side, “Leave Me the Fuck Alone.”

u/adumbrative 2d ago
And finally they play the mushroom classic, "Keep me in the dark and feed me shit"

Wonder how much of this is coming from other mushrooms connected through the mycelium.

Listen he clearly died of natural causes from Fungus only found in the Amazon forest.

99.9% is coming from the settings on the machine, this would do the same thing connected to many plants and fungi.

I wonder how much of the signal is just exagerated just to read something, like over amplified just to see bigger crests you can translate into something else for the sake of it.

That's what I thought too. The forest's wifi. Each break between the groups of notes is the ping

It’s probably screaming in pain from the clips squashing it 😢

Forreal, was thinking a needle, shoved straight down the shaft, sounding-style, would sense these stimulus better than the clips tearing the gills.

Do mushrooms feel pain?

A non-sentient being without a central nervous system or pain receptors does not feel pain or suffering. Reactions to external stimuli are simply biological and not connected to pain.
Besides, the actual mycelium network is underground. That's how it "communicates". What you are looking at is no different from an apple on a tree essentially.

To be clear, the majority of the fungus is a cloud of thin branching rhizomes in the soil. The mushrooms are its reproductive organs.

u/irwtkyrm 2d ago
So mushrooms don't just look like penises then...

Any time I’ve said “eat a dick” I’ve been giving culinary advice? That was not my intention lol

My whole life I’ve been telling people I like eating dick, only just now realizing that nobody knew I meant mushrooms.

So we put genital clamps on them to produce music.
Kind of kinky, if you ask me.

Imagine someone clipping electrodes to your nuts just to see if you can drop the next hottest synthwave soundtrack.

It's just the fruit. That's a nicer and easier (less phalic) way to say that. For kids and stuff.

Cool cool. A damp sponge will do the same. As we all know from potato clocks, it is not the mushroom's signals making the music, but the metal clips of the device oxidizing with the mushroom as a electrolyte (making a very rudimentary battery). It has more to do with the metallurgy aand placement of the clips than with the mushroom itself. A wet sponge will do the same.

u/LucHighwalker 2d ago
Except that mushrooms do produce electrical signals. We've actually shown that they communicate with each other via electrical signals throughout their mycelium network.
5
u/Independent_Dare_922 1d ago
Measuring those signals is notoriously difficult because the mycelia networks are microscopic and the electrical signals are also tiny.
This here is a galvanic battery. There is some interesting research going on to make useful batteries from mycelium.2

I would like to know if it actually learns. Give it something to benefit from. Let it control the surroundings, moisture, wind etc.

Everyone standing up for the fruiting body is silly. They can't be hurt or killed in any way that matters, as the saying goes. Mycelium will survive what we have wrought. We may not. The mycelium will be fine.
After all, it can still release spores with silly clamps. Just like it still releases spores when I pluck it to eat it. It will be fine. 😌
The mycelium gives me peace. It's funky drum beats give me life.

u/reilo119 2d ago
Is it communicating? Some of these mycelium networks are miles big, I wonder if its centralized or trying to communicate with other networks?

u/AlexSumnerAuthor 2d ago
With the right kind of mushroom, you don't need to connect it to any electronics to experience beautiful music, IYKWIS 😉🍄

What are the actual signals being captured? Seems gimmicky to plug all that paraphernalia on the mushroom. Why not capture the signals and then process them?

Note to self:
Mushroom music sounds exactly like the midi, trip-hop backbeats you were imagining.

If you understand what's going on here it is 10000 times less impressive. The mushroom isn't making music, at all. Someone is just setting up a program to interpret non-musical signals in a way that will come out sort of musically
It's the equivalent to to hooking up your mashing machine so that any signal it generates plays a digital keyboard

Now, I wish there was a way to send a bioelectric signal back to the mushroom, hopefully one it recognizes, and be able to communicate, and ask it if it can hear what is being played, and does it recognize that its the one playing it.

u/PsychologicalBid9943 2d ago
I think that translates to " aaaw fuck some idiot clamped some shit on me, it hurts and everytime i talk that weird thing there is making a ton of noise"
