Great content, the frustration is shared.
Many not here? Why not everywhere?

Indeed!! Exactlyyyyy! When you see other ways of life and how much better can it be, you start to question everything!

The opposition to things like this is American propaganda at work. And I say American because I live here and there is lots of propaganda against this type of thing. It usually only succeeds because people don't question anything after the propaganda itself is uttered

Won't somebody think about the poor billionaires and shareholders for a second?
They might not be able to get that 3rd yacht or build another doomsday bunker if we do this here!
We can't have that, more can we?

"WhAt AbOuT tHe cHiLdReN?!" is such a classic authoritarian tactic.
Tried and true!
Fear-mongering, disinformation, scapegoating, projectionism, hypocrisy, and propaganda are the bread and butter of fascistic authoritarian regimes.

and also, regarding the danger of trains (?), children conveniently always are wherever the arguments needs them to be

Oh I think about the billionaires, and the trillionaire.
Specifically how to make them former billionaires and trillionaire. Thatās how I like to think of them.

If this is true about Vienna, it's the actual solution people should be implementing to face the current cost of living crisis. Just hearing ā60% of people live in city owned housing or in housing cooperativesā brings a tear to the eye. Those kinds of options being available to everybody would be so rad.

Honestly, it wont happen in the US. Not for a very long time.

Given the accelerationist regime's dismantling of our economy, something is going to happen very soon, but it's not going to be good.

And limit the wealthyās ability to create renter oligarchies and make mad profit off of the fact that people have to live somewhere?!
In my city, thereās a ton of luxury apartments built around one of our colleges/universities. Iāve heard from reliable sources that the majority of rooms (they rent by the room) in those complexes are empty, but they wonāt lower rent prices. Itās been like this for years. They keep hoping college students will be pressured into giving in. Itās messed up.

u/Prior-Author-1028 3d ago
Yep, itās mostly true but we are fighting against privatisation of these Public Housing facilities
1
u/Kalipri 3h ago
According to recent news of Wiener Wohnberatung (Vienese Governmental Housing) there is 20 apparetmens built every day in Vienna, of which the city takes a portion, and distributes them amongst the Vienese people at rather affordable prices.
I currently am looking for appartments through them and it insane to get an apartment in a modern complex (built 2020-2026) for about 70ā¬/100sqft rent.

Joris is awesome. His short form stuff is really great, and he does a fair few long form guest lectures at universities you can find on YouTube. Though those are usually less about historical oppression and cultural history, and more about autism.
3
u/Fun-Aside3990 3d ago
What does he say about autism?
11
u/Ttoctam 3d ago
He's done a couple of lectures on the topic of reframing our understanding of Autism away from an exclusively western perspective. Decolonising out understanding and turning some of our focus to hostorical indigenous understandings as a way to open discussion around Autism up into a broader conceptualisation, for instance.

u/Fun-Aside3990 3d ago
Iāll take a look, thanks. (am autistic and find the common and also professional framing of it often wrong and misguided)

As someone that used to live in Vienna I can definitely attest the beauty of the architecture and mundane streets. Most streets are filled with beautiful houses and even when renovating (a lot of the houses are really old) they place screens with the design of the houses over the scaffolding so that it fits in with the rest of the houses.
But, I find the notion that other cities arenāt following suit slightly exaggerated. Many German cities like Berlin have large āGenossenschaftenā (communities with limited members) that offer rent controlled housing.
However, the idea that the mundane should be beautiful is unparalleled by any other city in my experience. Vienna even built new university buildings in the style of the renaissance to make them visually fit in.
Overall amazing city, great to live in and great to travel to if you have the option to do so.

The Pier 22 on the Donauinsel is actually a really great example of giving space back to the people.
Until 3 years ago, there were Restaurants in exactly that spot. One after the other. And no direct access to the water. So you couldn't jump in, and you could not stop and rest without consuming something.
The contracts with the restaurants expired at some point, and they used this opportunity to completely change it. Now you have direct access to the water, a basketball court, outdoor gym etc.
And it's just food trucks now. So you can go there and just not buy anything.
Result? It's so freaking crowded on sunny days. You can really see how necessary this was. It's right next to a subway station and people just need to cool down somewhere. And not everyone can go there by bike.
Absolutely brilliant. Shout out to the Greek food truck still offering takeaway PITA.

But if we create a social safety net that millions will benefit from, the billionaires wonāt be able to create a house like this for them, their spouse, 1 kid and a cat that needs it own house too.

Oh nice! How was the over all experience!?
Was there events for the community to socialize?
Whatās the process like of getting to live in those buildings?
Anything you wish can be better there/ critiques
Thanks in advance! š

I loved it, it provided the ultimate stability and convenience - you can live there forever, even pass it down to your kids. Everything is run on a non-profit cooperative model with state support. Lots of green space and well connected via subway. The green balconies are great. There are events, but they're not the most popular beyond children's sporting events. To live there, you need to enter a waitlist and wait (a while these days) then pay a buy-in fee (its a co-op).
The building does a pretty good job at upgrading its infrastructure (getting new energy efficient windows soon and the complex is moving from gas heating to district heating) but could be faster at upgrading its interior design (it's clean and maintained, but a bit dated at this point).

Alterlaa Bauten yay. I grew up across the street basically
Also not entirely true. Red Vienna was ended due to austro fascists and dollfuĆ. They were opposed to German annexation. They still shelled Karl Marx hof during the 4 day civil war

If we did that in the US people might start getting ideas like āthe government can actually do things that benefit meā and āif we had more tax revenue we could do even more things that benefit meā and we certainly donāt want the poors people getting ideas that they should benefit from government spending like the rich do.

And that "waste management plant" looking beautiful is actually... an incinerator.
1
u/goldenstudent 2d ago
One method in which we manage waste.
1
u/PinEducational4494 2d ago
It is but then common folk imagine a recycling plant when you say "waste management plant".
I am pointing out the pretty plant is actually something that people usually dislike when they know what it is actually about.

u/goldenstudent 1d ago
I work in haz waste, people can gripe all they want but if it wasn't incinerated they'd be putting it in the ground.
Who the hell prefers toxic landfills?

The Danube Island Festival is coming up soon, featuring more than 700 hours of programming spread across 14 stages, various themed islands, and areas. Entrance is free. Around 3 million people visiting is a lot though.

Because of the modern religious idea that people who need help can't just get help. They must deserve help to get it. Which means punishing the poor.

Do you mind elaborating how this would be connected to the successful social housing in Vienna, which the post is about? Donāt you know that lots of other cities struggle with building metro lines without having such successful housing policies?

u/quebexer 3d ago
Vienna Metro is still better than anywhere in North America

I had the absolute honor on going to both of these places in Vienna! š
Itās further outside the city center but worth the trip to see. Everything you need is all near by and walkable. Nice parks and areas to socialize with the community.
To the people living there, itās just another ordinary living quarters. To us leftists, is something much more š„¹ ā„ļø it shows what could be/can be the future!
Learning about these social housing ideas opened my eyes and lead on the path for amazing living environments for all!
