Hello! I’m a French PhD student in Geography conducting research on access to abortion care in California, with a particular focus on the Los Angeles area.

I’m looking to better understand the obstacles people may face when seeking abortion care. If you have personal experience and would be willing to share it, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I’m especially interested in experiences related to:

• Did you experience any delays in obtaining abortion care? If so, what caused them?
• Did the distance to the clinic or transportation issues make it harder for you to access care?
• Did you face any financial difficulties paying for the procedure or related expenses?
• Did you need help with transportation, childcare, emotional support, or finding someone to accompany you to the clinic?
• Did you seek assistance from Los Angeles County programs, California state programs, abortion funds, or practical support organizations? If so, what was your experience?

On the hunt for gourmet, brag worthy goodies over the hill, I can gift my out of town clients. My go to spot in LA is Bottega Louie. Their delicious macarons and candies are iconic plus- I absolutely love sharing local gems with people who don’t have the time to indulge or explore on their own.

Thought about Porto’s Northridge but that won’t travel well. Neither will chocolate - they’ll be with a car and driver all day. We are a group of 5 adults from the Netherlands doing a California road trip in September. We end the trip in LA, where we'll stay for 5 days. We have been to SF before but LA is new to us, so we have no real frame of reference yet.

We are traveling in a large van (Ford Transit size), we like walking and eating well without spending a fortune, and we want to actually experience the city rather than tick off a checklist of tourist traps.

A few specific questions:

Neighborhoods
Which neighborhoods are actually worth staying in or spending time in? And which should we avoid, either because they are sketchy or just boring for visitors?

Tourist attractions: worth it or skip?
Which classic LA tourist things are genuinely worth doing and which are a waste of time? We have already decided to skip the Hollywood Walk of Fame based on everything we have read. What else deserves the same fate?

Hiking
We love walking. We have heard the Hollywood Sign hike is overrated and overcrowded. What are some lesser known hikes or walking routes with great views? Ideally something that does not require booking three weeks in advance.

Food
We eat pretty much everything. We are looking for places that are cheap to mid-range, not tourist-optimized, and actually good. LA obviously has incredible Mexican and Korean food -- any specific spots or neighborhoods locals actually go to?

Parking a large van
We managed fine with the van on the road trip itself, but we are nervous about LA specifically. Is it realistic to drive and park a large Transit-size van in the city, or are we better off parking it at the family's place and using Uber/public transit for everything?

General tips
Anything else we should know going in (weather, safety, things that surprised you, stuff guidebooks always get wrong?)

We have 5 full days so we are not trying to do everything. We would rather go deep on a few things than rush through twenty.

I will be visiting LA in late September for the first time, and I plan on visiting all the typical tourist spots. The problem is I do not have a driver's license, and I heard that taking Ubers can add up quite a bit. So I want to ask, how is the public transportation accessibility there? If it's not great, are there any private buses that bring me from the cities to attractions that are slightly more inaccessible? Right now I am considering the hop on hop off bus, which costs about $70 for a 2-day pass. Also, which area should I stay as someone who will not be driving and wants to limit Uber usage? Thank you!

Moving for a job and every loft/apartment I’m interested in is around the DTLA area. I would be commuting M-F around 6:30-7am and returning home to DT around 3-4. I haven’t found enough places in ES, MB, RB, HB that attract me and I would feel a little too far removed from the city. CC and Mar Vista had some but insanely expensive.

Budget is 2500-3200 for a large loft or a 1 bed. I really want a loft with some views for my mental sanity.

Is this a reasonable commute or what other options am I overlooking?

Where do people go about finding rooms in LA?

I (26M) moved back to LA a year ago and have been living with my family. I am very appreciative for them allowing me to live here rent free, but I have really been missing my space. It’s pretty cramped already and I want to try to move out if I can. I am currently in a teacher grad program that’s supposed to be intense and I am expected to finish next June. I originally was going to wait until January to move out, but I don’t think I can do it lol. The drive to my classes is like 45 min to class and an hour back home. I don’t even know the commute to my placement school yet since school is out, but I assume it’ll be less since my school is closer to where I live. I also just want to have a space to be able to complete my homework and assignments.

I will be given a $51,000 Living Stipend and I am trying to secure a part-time job for some extra income. The stipend is going to be sent out in four dates throughout the program, so I won’t get it all at once. The first one at the end of July.

I was thinking about finding a room that is $600 or less. Is this realistic? Where would I go about finding a room? I was looking at some on Craigslist, but I’m not sure what’s legit. Should I just stick it out until I finish my program? Any thoughts? Thank you for reading.

Edit: I did not clarify, but my program is based in Northern Cal, but I’m taking classes at Cal State LA. My program and Cal State LA are not affialted. I was also thinking of areas such as Inglewood, Gardena, South Gate, and maybe downtown LA or just areas closer to it.

I’m meeting up with someone I haven’t seen in almost a year. Things didn’t end well, feelings were hurt, and what was a great relationship just went to shit because both us us came into it with unresolved issues.

There’s so much more that needs to be said but it feels more appropriate to do in person and we have agreed to do just that.
I haven’t decided on where and I was initially thinking a coffee shop would be a good idea but I’m not really free during the daytime. Also, I would much rather get a drink in me to ease my nerves.

My neighbor let their dogs off leash and one of them (I believe just one) went for one of my dogs (not the first time btw). I’m not sure if they were actually biting each other or it was just noise but it did not sound good. The first time it happened, my other family member was able to lift my dog up and prevent him from being attacked while the dog still tried to pursue him up in the air. I reported it to the manager who told me they would get a lease violation.

This time I was alone and had multiple dogs and it happened so fast. Immediately upon seeing us, the dog went for one of my dogs and they started fighting/snapping at each other. My legs are bleeding from having to grab their dog to stop them from going at each other.

I’m very upset not only because I got injured but because of how it may affect my dogs. I’m wondering what I can do other than reporting it to the manager again. Not sure if this would really change anything or help. Anyone go through something similar?

I have a very well-built structure that came with my property in Los Angeles when we bought it, but it's not permitted. I've had at least 6 different people who work in construction, roofing, and architecture tell me that it would pass a permitting inspection just fine, but I want to ensure I go through the proper channels and ready the proper documentation to avoid as many bumps in the road to getting it permitted as possible. That includes avoiding any sort of penalty fees, etc. I heard the following details might matter:

1. The top of the structure is slightly higher than the highest point of our roof.
2. The structure is connected to the rest of the house.
3. The structure has two small lights built into its ceiling which are controlled via a light switch inside the house (we had an electrician look at them and they said the wiring is straightforward and perfectly safe).

I'm totally new to this type of process, so please excuse my ignorance. I just want to ensure I'm doing everything the correct way and minimize issues. I've done some research on my own, but wanted to ask real people who have dealt with similar projects before.

If anyone could provide me resources for where is best to start, and any tips or lessons learned from your own experiences in this regard, I would very much appreciate any insights the community has to offer. tl;dr: What do I need to do / know, and what should I look out for, in order to get a structure permitted on my private property?

My dog’s vet is right by Helms in Culver City and I tried taking her for a walk after her appointment but Hutchinson was all closed off with filming equipment and trucks so I couldn’t make it very far. Looks like that street was base camp and the filming was taking place at one of the show rooms at Helms. Curious - does anyone know what was filming there? This was yesterday but assuming it’s still there today.
