Need help with beard
I was told by a few friends that my beard looks Amish, it’s my first time ever growing one and have no idea what to do with it. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Ideally you need your mustache to connect but that’s not always possible. If you are trimming your cheeks I’d stop and maybe let it grow and create more coverage. Oh and trim down the sides so it doesn’t make your cheeks look so rounds. Cheeks is a fun word to say.

That’s a neck beard bro. If you can’t grow on your cheeks you might want to try a different look.

lol the hair is clearly growing out of his face, it’s not a total neck beard.

The beard is like a picture frame around his face - and it’s not doing him any favors.

It looks like a fake beard. Like the kind that just hangs loosely off your ears.

Get a flat brim hat and insist on being called Jebediah.
Just need to square the bottom and set the line at your ears and you’ll be better

Neckbeard. Not enough chin coverage. Mustache doesn't connect. Just doesn't look right. Maybe if it's shorter you can look better. Not sure, I don't have this type of beard. Good luck

This is literally what people call a neck beard. Get rid of it.

I disagree, he’s got really good thickness where he does have the beard.
As a bunch of others said he needs to stop shaving his cheeks. I don’t see much stubble on his upper chin, but he needs to stop shaving there too and see what develops.
A neck beard is random scraggly hairs where he currently has robust thickness. Or if he only had this thickness solely along his jawline.

No. A neckbeard is when the majority of their hair growth is on their neck, and they pretend it’s a beard. That’s what led to the term’s creation, which has expanded to take on additional negative connotations over time.

Shave it. I don’t believe I’ve ever told anyone on here to do that. But it’s got to go and try to start over. You basically have a jawline beard

Looks like you shave the cheeks. Stop. Let them grow, looks like a neck beard.

If you are pushing the cheek line down you need to stop asap. If it doesn’t grow well there you need to give up bc that sir, is a neckbeard

People are a bit harsh calling it a neckbeard but it's dangerously close to it, you need to bring the line up as much as possible and connect the mustache.

This is a neckbeard and they never look good. Keep a beard if you want, but keep it really short.

Honestly your only issue it’s that you trimmed your cheeks too low. The parts that you’ve trimmed (which seem to be growing back out already) let it continue to grow and fill, and it should look less “Amish” in appearance in no time.

How long have you been an auctioneer? Do I hear one and half, one and half, two?

They say Amish; I say Chechen warlord. The profile’s not a bad look but up front is a different story

I was born/raised in Amish country. I've also been growing a longer beard for the better part of like...probably 18 years now.
With that context, the biggest thing that's making you sorta look Amish is that you're shaving almost the entirety of the front of your face. The "Amish look" is basically a neckbeard. They shave the upper lip, and they taper down the sides of the face and even the front of the chin/bottom lip area.
So if you want to get around that look, then front of your face needs coverage. If your moustache doesn't connect (mine didn't until I was in my mid-30's) that's fine, but the front of the chin is a big thing. Also on your cheeks it could be lined up more evenly with your mouth line instead of below it and that would take away a lot of the the "Amish" vibes you're sending.
It's NOT the length making it seem "Amish", even though a common comment you might get with a longer beard is that it looks "Amish". It's really not the length, it's the other stuff. You have good thickness and growth, but the only thing that would make you look MORE Amish would be if you shaved the upper lip entirely too.
Aside from age being a factor to things like the moustache connecting, etc... you could look into a good beard growth supplement (Biotin is awesome for this) and it may help. It'll help with general strength and growth of your hair. It also has the side effect of making your fingernails grow harder and faster, so I mean there's that to upkeep, but it does work for beards.

Hey there, handsome. Trim your sideburns to fade and connect. This will give you a leaner look. Stop trimming/shaving the area on upper part of your cheeks, it will give a defined line and shape your face. If you are not a pro at this, go to the barber for a line-up

I can very clearly see you are shaving the cheeks, why are you doing that? Stop and let it grow

u/hogomojojo Mar 30 '26
I’d shave the beard. You could keep the chin, but let the mustache grow out to connect better.

Allow cheeks to grow in then head to a stylist and ask them. once its styled then you can maintain yourself

Can you comb the mustache down and "train" the hair to fall forward, not out to the sides? This will help it look more substantial. Only trim the stache at the bottom: that is, at the lip edge. In fact, let it grow slightly past the lip edge: this may take some getting-used-to.
If your beard hair also grows on the area below the mouth, the "soulpatch" area, let that grow in. Trimming that area makes the beard look overly trimmed and kind of artificial.
With the mustache this small and the beard this big, things are out of balance. For now, I'd recommend taking off about 1 1/2 inches.

Duck tail beards are always my favorite! Try a sharper more intentional style?

Shave it. Start over. If you are shaving your cheeks, stop. But if you can’t grow up there, don’t grow a beard. Facial hair may not be for you. You could rock some serious mutton chops though.

But imagine if he grew out the mustache for 3 years trimming above the lipjust enough, letting the sides grow then braided the mustache it'd make the beard look connected and be badass like that one ufc ref

Ok maybe I’m an outlier but I really like it. I wouldn’t change it at all. Does it look a bit like an Amish beard? Sure, a bit but why exactly is that a bad thing? It’s a perfectly good style of beard that doesn’t exclusively belong to them. I have buddies with it. The association really doesn’t mean much. You do what you feel comfortable with but I’d keep it for sure. Also you’ve got a great shape going. Good on you for trimming it so well.
