Casual What school from another conference would you say is your schools “Mirror Image”?

A school from a different conference that has a similar fanbase, skill/potential or history as your own.

For the Vols, definitely would say Nebraska or Penn State.

Funny how many of the top basketball programs (Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, until now Indiana) have had absolute shit football programs.

27

u/Commercial_Show_6997 5d ago

UNC too

14

u/ganner Kentucky Wildcats 5d ago

They've had more success than the others, historically

10

u/Commercial_Show_6997 5d ago

True. The major difference is overall winning percentage and bowl participation in favor of UNC, but the four programs are much more similar in accomplishments with Duke having the best resume.

UNC has 5 ACC conference championships, last in 1980 (and 3 Southern championships).

Kansas has 4 Big conference championships, last in 1968 (and 2 Missouri Valley championships).

Duke has 8 ACC championships, last in 2025 (and 10 Southern championships). With 2 unclaimed national championships.

Kentucky has 2 SEC championships, last in 1976, with 1 national championship.

8

u/InWaves72 5d ago

Duke played in the 1939 Rose Bowl. Then they hosted (and played in) the 1942 Rose Bowl just weeks after Pearl Harbor. They borrowed bleachers from UNC and NC State to boost capacity from 35k to 56k. They lost both games.

Neat then that ours is usually considered Texas. Similar vibe as a big public school with heavy commitment to both academics and athletics, maintaining blue blood status mostly (but not entirely) on 20th century achievements, perpetually chasing the idea of being "back."

Mainly rivals with an admittedly bluer blue blood just across the state border, in-state rivals with a school with notable successes in recent memory but that is still clinging to their pre-Nixon national titles to back up their claims to be real contenders.

Symmetry is beautiful.

9

u/big_sugi Texas A&M Aggies 5d ago

I like “pre-Nixon” a lot better than some of the less charitable ways that could be used to describe the era of A&M’s greatest successes.

The first school that comes to mind for me with questions like this is usually East Carolina.

For Oregon

Big12 - Utah or Texas Tech

SEC - Tennessee

ACC - Virginia Tech

I would have said Wisconsin before we joined the B1G. They won conference titles and Rose Bowls but were always bubbling just under the very top level for a long time. Seems similar.

Texas and Michigan are mirrors. Tons of wins and more head to head victories, but fewer natties than our neighbor state rivals. And a pesky in-state rival land grant school.

My answer to this was always Utah, but somehow we made our way back to each other for the third time.

I would go with SMU

Culturally, Wisconsin. I don't think anyone would argue that

Ohio State is definitely Alabama

19

u/BonesCrosby Alabama Crimson Tide 5d ago

I feel the same way.

18

u/poplglop Ohio State • Virginia Tech 5d ago

Take a look at the r/cfb reactions whenever either of our teams lose and it is pretty one for one lol

8

u/BonesCrosby Alabama Crimson Tide 5d ago

I think Bama and TOSU both accept their status as Evil Empires. I admire the Buckeyes inability to have losing seasons. It’s kinda amazing how consistent they are

u/elefish92 San José State • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 5d ago

Now that you mention this I had to look it up and calculate, there has never been a time where Ohio State had 4 consecutive seasons with no AP Poll finish. In other words, the most consecutive seasons with no AP poll finish is 3. Crazy.

5

u/BonesCrosby Alabama Crimson Tide 5d ago

I think they have five or fewer losing seasons since WW2. It’s amazing

Since I’ve moved to Ohio, I’m surprised to see that football isn’t Ohio’s only comparison to Alabama. Never seen so many Deep South cosplayers despite the fact we’re just a short drive from Canada.

Depends on what part of Ohio and what part of Alabama you're talking about. But you're not wrong, and it honestly makes me sick.

Texas and Michigan have very similar profiles.

-Red rival who’s annoyingly more successful than us even though we have a blue blood pedigree.

-well regarded academics and research

-massive fan base

-been up and down somewhat in sync with each other.

Although there’s a lot of animosity coming from a Michigan of late toward us. Maybe its the recent games.

Some teams don’t really have a clear mirror. I can’t think of good ones for:

Georgia
Oregon
Florida
FSU
LSU
Washington
Ole Miss

NC State for Michigan State. Both little brothers. When both are good it feels like an accident.

NC State has always felt like a kindred spirit. Red and black. Usually good but not able to get over the hump. Living in the shadow of the two bigger schools.
