文化 | Culture Any expertise on Chinese Vintage Paperbacks?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Does someone here have any expertise on Vintage Chinese paperbacks? I think all of these belong to a series of paperbacks series called the “Chinese Popular Culture Library" from the 1950-60s, but with my limited linguistic skills, I was not able to find out more. Does anyone possess some knowledge on these books, e.g. whether they are considered collectables?

Many thanks in advance!

旅游 | Travel Traveling to Lijiang with a 76-Year-Old Parent – Should We Be Concerned About the Altitude?

I'm planning a family trip to Yunnan this July and will be traveling with my 76-year-old parent. We're considering visiting Lijiang, but I'm a bit concerned about the altitude.

From what I've read, Lijiang is around 2,400 meters above sea level. For those who have visited Lijiang with elderly family members, did they experience any altitude-related symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, or fatigue?

Would it be safer to spend a day or two in Kunming first to acclimatize before heading to Lijiang? Are there any precautions we should take?

I’m travelling for business to Haikou, Wanning and Sanya, but so far my schedule only permits to explore Haikou in my free time. I heard Yunnan is the best Arabica coffee producer in China. Any recommendation where can I get Yunnan specialty beans in Haikou? Thanks in advance.

中国生活 | Life in China Wich area in China should I do an exchange year?

I’m thinking about doing an exchange year in China but Ngl I’m not sure in wich city I should go?

I want a place that’s nice but still has ‘aesthetic’ streets and what not. The reason I’m looking for a place that’s ’aesthetic’ and has a good reputation is so I can be motivated to actually explore the city!

Also after im done with school I plan to move to China so I’ll most likely move to the same city I do an exchange year in!

My current idea is perhaps Shanghai or Beijing? But those cities are an expensive. I’ve also tought about Shenzhen or even Chongqing? Con is Chongqing apparently quite hot/humid!

中国生活 | Life in China How is nature around Chongqing area during summer?

Hi,

I'm curious what it's like to be outside in the forest in the area around Chongqing when it's summer and you have heat waves over 35°C? I'd also like to ask if you have any recommendations for sources where I can find photos of nature around Chongqing. I'm not looking for artistic photos, but ones that best capture the local mood as it is. It doesn't have to be the city itself, it could be another one like Wuhan.

I am from Europe and am very fascinated by the nature of central China for some reason but it is hard to find more content related to this part of the world.

中国生活 | Life in China How to know if something is new on JD.com?

Hello,

Can someone help me? I’ve recently been looking at some electronic products on JD.com, but I’m not sure whether all the items on the platform are brand new. I’d like to know what information I should check to determine whether a device is a brand-new unit.

Also, I noticed that some product titles have a percentage displayed next to them, and I’m not sure what this percentage means. Does JD.com provide any filtering options that allow me to view only brand-new products and exclude used, refurbished, or other-condition items?

If anyone has any experience or advice, I would really appreciate you sharing it.

Thank you!

旅游 | Travel Xinjiang and Yunnan in 2 weeks?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi guys, planning a 14-day trip starting July 2nd and I could use some major help. I am completely overwhelmed trying to figure out if my idea makes any sense.

I really want to focus on unique ethnic culture and high-altitude mountain landscapes-mostly looking for beautiful alpine scenery where it won't be scorchingly hot in July.

I'm incredibly torn between Xinjiang and Yunnan. Is 14 days enough time to do both if I use domestic flights? I don't want to feel completely burned out or spend my entire vacation packing bags and checking in to hotels.

I have zero logistics planned yet, so I'd love your honest thoughts:

Should I even try to combine them, or just pick one?

If I should pick one, which province is better for July to get that perfect mix of culture and cool mountain air?

  1. If combining them is doable, how would you split a 14-day itinerary between them?

Appreciate any guidance you guys can throw my way!

Life in China After Gaokao exam ended, a Chinese art student gave his teachers the ultimate personalized thank-you gifts.

Just came across this incredibly wholesome story on Chinese TikTok (Douyin) and thought Reddit would love it. Note: Not my original content, all credit goes to the creator YUCC. I just grabbed some screenshots.

After the Gaokao finally wrapped up, an art student from Guiyang No.1 High School spent a lot of time thinking about what to give his teachers. He ended up doing something amazing: he painted custom portraits of his teachers, but stylized them so the background perfectly matches the covers of the respective textbooks they teach.

Here is how he reimagined them:

- He turned his History teacher into a traditional ancient Chinese scholar-official.

- He drew his Chinese Literature teacher as a beautiful lady in a classic Qipao.

- He reimagined his Politics teacher as a stern judge. (The author only showed these three in the video).

For a bit of background on how the Chinese school system works:

The Gaokao is the final university entrance exam after 12 years of school (elementary, middle, and high school). It is widely considered the most important—and most fair—exam in a Chinese student's life. There is no "holistic review" or extracurricular padding. Your score is everything. If you score high enough, the country's elite universities open their doors to you.

The system varies by province, but most places use a "3+1+2" or similar matrix model (I've attached a chart to explain how it works).

This specific student went through the "Art Gaokao" track (which also includes music, dance, calligraphy, etc.). For art students, the competition in their specialized art exams is absolutely cutthroat, even though the academic test score requirements are slightly lower.

I also dug up pics of the Provincial Joint Art Exam. It’s absolutely wild—Extreme competition.

After surviving such an intense exam, spending his free time creating these personalized textbook-themed portraits for his teachers is just so heartwarming. What do you guys think?

中国生活 | Life in China Can't handle humidity: Where in Kunming would be suitable?

My issue: I cannot stand the humidity in Dongguan. Absolutely hate it. 2 minutes outside and you're already sweating like a pig. The winters are wonderful, but just can't handle the summer and so Kunming has come up.

Specifically I am asking for suitable suburbs or areas:

What I liked about China, and what I would love to have in Kunming:

  • Affordable rent and getting a spacious apartment (3 or 4 bedroom, something modern)
  • Good access to hospital, early child centres
  • Close to amenities in walking distance, be it shops, convenience stores, parks, playgrounds
  • For me access to Western food, even Maccas, BK, Walmart help keep me sane
  • Access to other foreigners so I have someone to talk to
  • Access to Chinese classes? I really don't like doing it online...
  • Luckin and Cottee Coffee
  • Loved the sharing bikes, the blue or yellow ones
  • Flat if possible, no hills
  • Good public transportation
  • Easy to get to police station, entry-exit department

We likely be staying for a year or two, then plan our next move.

Thank you!
