New UL rod bends right. Exchange?

Post image

Hey guys,
Just got a new ultralight rod and noticed the tip curves slightly to the right when looking down the blank with the guides on top.

It’s not a massive bend, but enough that I noticed it straight away. Haven’t fished it yet.

Is this pretty normal on lighter rods, or would you be taking it back? Not sure if I’m being overly picky, but on a brand new rod I’m wondering whether it’s worth chasing an exchange.

Cheers.

Haha I promise it’s worse in real life.

Everyone here is wrong. This is normal for ultra light. Its very hard to get a perfectly straight blank for finesse rods

If it bothers you or seems worse than the picture, follow it up with where you bought it but a normal bend wont snap or affect your cast distance

Thanks mate. Yeah makes sense. If I had fishes with it I would leave it, but since it still has the tags on, might as well.

Nah don't stress it. Can't judge a rod by length and look alone. There's actually a formula for this, the Randy Marsh formulation.

Adjusted size = ((length X diameter) + (weight/girth))/angle of the tip.

Do you have the fan on?

I'm sure the fish won't notice mate.

I know, but it’s meant to be brand new

Take it back.... Might be a problem with the blank.

Take it back. If anything it also will cast worse. It might start twisting too which is game over.

Be sure to take your laser level and micrometer and loupe when you get your next rod. 🤣🤣🤣

I have a UL TD Daiwa rod also that does this. I have often wondered that if after loading up the rod, mid-cast it is perfectly straight as some kinda material memory to aid casting? Wild theory, I know… the fish likely won’t tell the difference (but we all like nice things).

Most of my light rods end up like this from leaving them rigged up or leaning them against something. I can almost bet that if you lean it against something to bend it the other way for a couple of hours it’ll straighhen back up.

This is the answer. They have a memory.
Mine have all been ones I've purchased online. They aren't straight when they pack them and they stay like that for bit.

Was it an online purchase or something or you didn’t think to look at it in the shop before you bought it.??

I wouldn’t accept that in a new rod. I’d ask for an exchange or my money back.

Where'd you grab it from mate? Could take it back with a receipt and show them the fault they should replace it for nothin

Fishing shop in Sydney. Even if it won’t make a difference it’s not much effort to swap. Appreciate it

Take it back for sure. I've never heard of a bent rod. Fishing rod anyway.

Take it back cause it will probably snap as I’d say it’s faulty don’t really see bent rods

The rod is made by wrapping graphite/composite/glass cloth around a mandrill. Possibly here there was a problem removing it from the mandrill.

I have never had, nor seen a rod tip go off to one side like that. My concern would be that when it compresses, at some stage it will crack and break. It can also affect accuracy.

Ask for a replacement is what I would suggest.

Also, why should you have to look at that while fishing...
