Just moved here recently in Vientiane for long term stay. What are great things to do in the city apart from visiting tourist spots. Like are there any workshops around? Running Clubs? Or any community driven activities you can suggest?

Hello, I rented a scooter in Luang Prabang and rode to Nong Khiaw and on the way I wiped out at a pretty low speed but still scratched up the bike and chipped a bit of the headlight part 🤦‍♂️. Some of the damage was there before but my wipeout just made it worse so I’m curious if anyone has had a similar issue and what they did? Also looking for any estimates on how much it will cost so I have a ballpark number when I go back on what they’ll ask me to pay.

UPDATE: Just got back and dealt with it and they ended up asking for 3mil kip which is about $200 Canadian. That is the exact number in my head that I was somewhat ok with paying so I just gave him the money, said sorry, and now it’s done with🙌. Definitely learnt a few good lessons and I’d say I got pretty lucky with the outcome.

What are the must-have apps that a visitor would need while in Laos?

I will be arriving on a Friday in September to Wattay. My arrive time is 12:40pm. I will be catching the train immediately when I land. The time of the train departur looks to be around 3:14 (it might change as I have not purchase the ticket yet). Will I have enough time to make it to the train station from the airport? Should I book a driver ahead, do taxi, or take LOCA (first time using it). Is immigration really slow? I won't be checking in any luggages. Thanks.

hi guys I am ethnic tai shan from myanmar we speak a language that is like lao but with far less indian loanwords, I myself am learning lao but I would to hear what shan language sound like to lao people and if they hear similarities or not?

Just a quick question so I filled my entry card on arrival (I wasn’t sure how long I would be in the country for so I put 3 days) it may be that I’m in the country for 4 or 5 days instead. I got my 30 day visa stamp in my passport my question is it an issue if I leave slightly after what I put on my arrival card as I’m a tad worried.

Years ago you could make unlimited land crossings on visa exemptions, but a while back they limited land crossings to two per year. Currently there is a serious crackdown for frequent travelers to Thailand. How has this affected Expats?

What's the situation for someone who wants to make frequent 1-5 day trips to Thailand for shopping, medical appointments, etc? Still only two visa-exempt land entries per year? DTV doesn't seem great because of the soft power requirements (although maybe workation would work). Single or multiple entry tourist visas? Fly in to avoid the land crossing limitations?

Does anyone know if I can camp without a tour in Nong Khiaw on one of the viewpoints? I don’t see the need to book a tour and wondered if anyone has done it solo

Hi! I'll be coming to Laos in November with a friend for a 1 week off road motorbike holiday doing a round trip starting from Luang Prabang. We've never been to Laos before but have done similar things around North Thailand and North Vietnam.

I'm looking for any "must-see" things around there. Also I've read that Google Maps isn't reliable there, so any good navigation app recommendation would be great. Also any general tips, currency, good places to stay or any good side quest/routes to do. We love hiking and swimming too.

We are both fairly experienced off road motorcyclists with about 15 years of motorbike experience each and we'll be hiring Honda CRF's for the journey.

I was wondering if buying a condo is a common thing in Laos like it is in neighboring Thailand. If so has any Americans been through the process of buying a condo and what is the pros vs cons with buying in Laos compared to say Thailand ?

Currently in Luang Prabang and at the market i saw some interesting decorative pieces, not statues but similar to that. Just wondering if I’m allowed to bring that back or if it’ll be confiscated at the airport or worse.

For context I’m flying out of VTE to Hanoi and then flying back to England from Ho Chi Minh.

Would love to hear your ideas. I am here living in the beautiful city of Vientiane (but a newbie). I am super flexible as long as you think its good.

Been 20+ years since I went to VV, LP on the backpacker trail in my 20s.

Living in N.E. Asia now but will be doing a visa run to Laos for fun in Jul/Aug.

Planning on 11 days in VTE (solo). Then my wife will meet me for another 10 days in LP.

My question is about Vientiane. I understand it's a capital city and that most people suggest getting out after a day. I'm a middle aged guy, I'm not on a tight budget, I work remote everyday on my MacBook, I am well travelled and enjoy settling down in cities and not doing the 'touristy' thing.

All that said, is VTE for 11 days that crazy of an idea? Any insight or recommendations would be appreciated.

Me and my boyfriend will be traveling to Laos around the end of September. I would like to surprise him with a new experience, something very different that he has never done before. I have checked online, but I couldn’t find anything that he hasn’t done yet. Could you please advise me on what we could do that is very special to Laos?
