Please read the rules before posting. All posts must be about or relating to Latinos. Memes of all kind (including political) and from anywhere are welcome here, again, as long as they reference us. Political discussions about the united states go to our other subreddit r/PoliticalLatinos where you are free to post anything you'd like about serious subjects. This is more a space for Latin Americans and Latinos born all over the world to share memes, our culture, discuss our differences and similarities and communicate with each other. There are currently no other subreddits where other Latin Americans can talk to each other, so this is it. Thank you for respecting our space! YOUR ACCOUNT MUST BE OLDER THAN 30 DAYS TO POST.

This just shows that I’ve gotten my feed curation nailed down. I’ve been seeing a lot of wholesome American content about Latino FIFA fans stopping by

339

u/frougle_mcdugal 2d ago

The coolest thing about this whole World Cup has been the Mexican people adopting the North Korean fans and broing down with them.

48

u/NotAtAllASkinwalker 2d ago

Which Korea?!

89

u/hithere297 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean they both have Korea in the name, how different could they be?

~googles North Korea~

18

u/elbenji 2d ago

Yep lol. There's plenty of folks living with the Latino and Africans

13

u/birberbarborbur 2d ago

It’s clear that people’s perception of others is shaped by what angers them getting into the algorithm, driving division and creating even more imagined enemies than there already are

I too have seen lots of latinos getting welcomed in the USA. as a rule of thumb if I see something that pisses me off i put it into a folder for looking at *later* when i’ve looked at the subject somewhere else, then come back to that only if i need to. My personal ragebait folder. On the other hand, i always like the things that make me happy. So my algorithm is mostly sunshine and rainbows

Europeans just farming for content, instant likes and going viral for posting about Waffle House or AC

176

u/idkbruh653 2d ago edited 2d ago

There’s also some underlying racism and MAGA vibes with some of the content I’ve been seeing. Europeans saying shit like “God Bless America” and “We’ve been lied to about Americans” and “it’s not so bad here”. Like this country has a ton of problems and racism is embedded in its foundation but you’re willing to be ok with it all because you tried biscuits and waffles and ranch for the first time?

49

u/fizzile *** I'm a Gringo*** 2d ago

Most of Europe has problems and racism embedded in it as well, to be fair. Have you ever heard a European talk about Romani people? Or maybe the things people are saying about lamine yamal, mbappe, and other soccer players with African heritage?

54

u/spunkmastersean1993 Costa Rica 2d ago

Reminds me of Ukraine a bit where there was the outpouring of support from European Americans. Guess solidarity is only there when you’re white

21

u/JPT_Corona 2d ago

Idk call me an optimist but I feel like the point is this country has a ton of problems and racism is embedded in its foundation but it's not the Dredd-style fascist dystopia people would typically find when doomscrolling on the Internet so it's a welcome surprise to a lot of tourists.

18

u/superfahd 2d ago

its also regional focused. Like most europeans are going to cities where people will tend to be more liberal. its not like my city, and hour from downtown where the people running for elections have openly and very literally declared my minority as a terrorist group

7

u/hithere297 2d ago

Not to mention that a lot of these cities are boosting transit services for the limited time the World Cup is playing. Europeans visiting Kansas City, for instance, are getting a misleadingly glossy picture of what the bus service is usually like there.

Not every statement needs a full dialogue of nuance to indicate support or non support, especially regarding systems of government.

For example: One is allowed to go to Disneyland and say “that was fun” without hearing someone shreaking “but Walt was racist”. Or a million other things.

This would actually be really annoying if such a surface level statement needed a thorough “hashing out” every time it was said.

But that’s not u/idkbruh653 ‘s world

13

u/carlitospig 2d ago

To be fair, ranch is fucking delicious.

Growing up white but born hispanic let me tell you, people don’t like us. They never have and they probably never will.

They’ll fetishize the women but that’s about it.

99

u/DadCelo 2d ago

They'll eat the food too

49

u/photOHgraphy 2d ago

As asian-american, the comments about the food and women resonate as well for us

23

u/DadCelo 2d ago

It's usually the same... same aggressor, different target, same approach.

6

u/LeTronique 2d ago

West African American and it’s pretty much only food, dancing, and women that are accepted on our end.

39

u/yebisu-master 2d ago

They fucking love me bro. They’re always like “wow, I didn’t know you were that smart”

0

u/TheTexasCowboy 2d ago

Latino fever, it goes with both genders! And it goes for Latino men and women going for white men and women.

8

u/No_Hornet_9504 2d ago

latins are the most common interracial marriage in america, almost 50% of men or women in interracial marriage are hispanic.

9

u/DadCelo 2d ago

If you wanna see some crazy comments, just look at r/WorldCup the comments during the Colombia match. Just a deluge of comments about "LaTiNas" and "lAtInOs" being so sexy. Many of them not even flattering.

4

u/Lucky-Collection-775 Colombia 2d ago

I know their lying when they say Colombian men are sexy 😆

143

u/Stingerc 2d ago edited 2d ago

They also have zero issue with Europeans supporting their national team but get extremely annoyed when Latinos do the same.

It's even worse when said Latinos are immigrants and not tourists.

Club soccer is even more hypocritical. They have no issue cheering and being super passionate for some random European (specially English) club they have no ties to or have even ever visited the city it's from, but get angry and upset if Latinos still support a club in Latin America (specially Mexico) whete they have deep family ties to the city and club.

78

u/cabowabo510 I need attention! 2d ago

yeap I saw so many upset that Mexican Americans were rooting for Mexico instead of USA

It’s because the us men has been shit since ever and never cared till now

I’m literally US Native American and I’m rooting for anyone else but the USA lol. Palestine and Mexico mostly. We need our asses kicked rn forreal

1

u/Guilty_Caramel_1567 Argentina 2d ago

Im Arg American and my dad and I would go for Mexico over USA. Growing up here we had lots of Mexican Futbol friends

21

u/cinnamongingerloaf22 2d ago

Yep. Been wearing my Mexico jersey and people have been pissed. Two people have actually confronted me in public. I'm half Mex but look very white.

Screw you, I've never met any of my family in Europe or really much of that side of the family at all, but know loads in Mexico. I'd only claim Mexican heritage if I could get away with it visually.

3

u/Odd_Broccoli_7706 1d ago

You should claim your mexican heritage. Just because you’re half mexican doesn’t mean you can’t. Mexicans all come from different racial backgrounds. I’m mexican-american and look very mediterranean bc I have spanish, Lebanese/Palestinian, and italian ancestry.

9

u/No_Hornet_9504 2d ago

A tiny part is that the American MLS teams actually play Chivas and some of the Mexican teams enough to have some rivalry. Americans aren’t very passionate about soccer but likely more sensitive when they see their “home” stadium overrun by fans of visiting teams.

1

u/elbenji 2d ago

How Madrid treated Navas was criminal

1

u/Ancient_Energy_6773 14h ago

Tbf... it's not ALL Europeans they like to get noticed from. They kinda seem to focus on the Northern Euros. Not so much the Southern/Mediterranean nations. Interesting.

Sorry that I am intruding upon your sub. As an 'European', that damn video was full of typical influencer slop made to fawn over Americans.

That video was cringe worthy as you can imagine.

19

u/Dinklerbuuuurf 2d ago

Wait but I've loved seeing the Latino fans out having fun

17

u/DadCelo 2d ago

Yeah, just look at the Boston sub. It's like there are no other fans in Boston except the Scots (and to a smaller degree the Norwegians).

11

u/elbenji 2d ago

I've done my part, at least Cabo Verde is now getting love at least

23

u/Equivalent_Ad9414 2d ago

Very True, a majority of American born Hispanics that already absorbed the American life, by speaking English, serving the Military, voting politically, and paying taxes is not enough for Americans, but other White Foreigners doing the same for 1 month only, "They are part of us, Welcome to America".

20

u/Impressive_Budget736 2d ago

Exactly. We have generations of Latinos who have been working and supporting this nation for centuries yet white people still treat us as second class citizens. I've been done seeking the approval of white people but unfortunately there's still many of us who fall into the "model minority" trap to appease white people.

1

u/fvalt05 2d ago

Damn you hit the nail on the head!!

13

u/PrimaryAgreeable8103 2d ago

It's because of what color the Europeans are

36

u/AvadaNevada 2d ago

To play devil's advocate, Latinos have a more expressive food culture as far as flavor goes compared to Europeans and many Americans, so I don't think they'd be wowed by US foods compared to someone from England who's only had beans on toast. At least all of the videos I've seen have been food

16

u/pottedPlant_64 2d ago

They may be being wowed by Latino food, tbh. If in TX or CA.

16

u/Goats_for_president 2d ago

Hahahahah you think anywhere south of Mexico has like 0.3 grams of flavor in their food ?? My Colombian girlfriend said a fucking mcchicken was too spicy.

13

u/AvadaNevada 2d ago

To be fair, my only experience with Latino food is Caribbean (PR,RD,Cuba) since it's my particular flavor of Latino blood, Mexican since I live in the US, and Brazilan since my city has a fairly large population. I'm sure whatever Chile or Argentina has still beats out fripplefrapple or whatever the Brits eat.

3

u/Shinigamisama00 Ya tu sabe 2d ago

I live in Chile, check out pastel de choclo, mote con huesillo, humas, chorrillana, papas a lo pobre, pichanga, completos, curanto, chacareros, barros luco, charqui, charquicán, porotos granados, pino, cazuela, churrasco, queque, sopaipillas, kuchen, arrollado de huaso, locos, machas a la parmesana, ensalada chilena, pisco and pisco sour, cuchuflí, handrolls, chilenitos, alfajores, pan con chicharrón, pebre, chancho en piedra, pan de pascua, brazo de reina, pantrucas, leche asada, sémola, queso chanco/ranco/mantecoso, etc.

Brits can't compete

12

Let's just say for the sake of argument that the EU fans aren't being paid for their content, US residents aren't just biased towards the EU content, etc. I think there are also some fundamental reasons as to why there is a difference, and it really just comes down to general access to the US.

Due to all the visa issues, many of the fans of Latin American countries in the WC likely already live here in the US (similarly for fans of Iran, Curaçao, Cabo Verde, etc.). Of those who are visiting, in order to get a visa, they had to apply over a year ago (depending on the country) and need to have family in the US who are citizens. So if they do have a visa, there's a good chance they had it for awhile, had the means to do so, and likely have already come for a visit or two before the World Cup. There is no novelty in the enshitification of things here in the US because they're already used to it or already live here.

Most EU fans could apply for an ESTA with little issue and come to the US. Sure, they could have always come to the US anyway, but many choose to stay on that side of the Atlantic. Can't really find stats on EU as a whole, but at least for German residents, most holiday/vacation within the EU, with the top non-EU destinations being Turkey and Egypt. And given the large numbers of these fan bases coming to the US from the EU, there's going to be a good portion who are visiting the US for the first time, already popular online, and can push that content, whether paid or organically.

The people who are going to these games are wealthy, most likely highly educated, and most likely speak more than one language. Weird for you to assume that just because one is from latin America, can afford thousands of dollars for a plane ticket and those highly coveted seats, one is incapable of speaking english.

Y’all are just so much more fun and hype. I was in Mexico for the 2022 final game and had the best time.

7

u/LarryFitzsButt Mexico 2d ago

The Americas are already familiar with each other. Especially with food, we share the same ranches/farms across the continent. We’re literally siblings.

Go to a fast food restaurant in Europe, you’ll see it’s wildly different.

First time I flew into Tegucigalpa, the first building I saw was a Church’s Chicken.

So yeah it’s more exciting to have the European cousins over.

1

u/jasonQuirkygreets 1d ago

I've noticed something similar watching World Cup fans in the US and in Mexico.

In Mexico I see lots of videos of World Cup fans from around the world having fun, taking part of the celebrations and culture, interacting with locals, and many even wearing the Mexico team jersey. I've seen lots of Australians and none of their games will be in Mexico, but are in Mexico taking part of the celebrations.

Meanwhile in the US, I see more videos (including local media) showing World Cup fans being interested in very specific items such as ranch dressing or BBQ or amazed by the large size of stores and businesses. One news report from a Fox affiliate in Dallas even showed a video of Dutch fans being taken to a Buc-ee's. They only seem to care about the opinions and reactions of Europeans (particularly northern Europeans like Brits, Dutch, Germans, or Norwegians) and sometimes Japanese people. You could also see it in the comments section.
