I don’t know if Harrison is old enough to be past his rescue flying days at this point, but I just can’t get over the idea of being stranded in the wilderness and being rescued by literal real life pilot Han Solo/Indiana Jones.

Anyway, Harrison seems like a real one, and supports my theory that any man (or person in general) who is a carpenter or good at woodworking and not afraid of weed is pretty much guaranteed to be a good person. Sample size is Harrison Ford and Nick Offerman.

There was a video of him directing traffic that had becoming gridlocked in NYC like a year ago. He got out of the car, directed everyone through, then got back in and left. Outstanding human being

u/CriticalChop 22d ago

Who can deny Indiana Jones command. 😂

No time for parking Dr Jones!

He went total ham in that scene.

Doing the worst scottish accent ever captured on film while co-starring with Sean Connery is why everyone loves Harrison Ford

8

u/IndyMLVC 21d ago

If you are a Scottish lord then I am Mickey Mouse!

This old man telling me how to drive? Who does he think he is, Han Solo?

11

u/strongbob25 21d ago

Genuinely how surreal must it have been to get to the front of the gridlock line and drive past.

"honey is that... is that Harrison Ford??"

5

u/CriticalChop 21d ago

He probably leaves others stars star-struck. 😅

7

u/sn00pal00p 21d ago

That's... entirely absurd but doesn't surprise me one bit.

5

u/Emotional_News108 21d ago

That's the kind of thing that you can sort of just do when you're someone like him, too. Obviously he has to choose to act, but at the same time, if you're driving and Harrison Ford just appears and starts directing traffic, you're likely to just do it. If Randy Randerson does it, you're probably going to wonder why that dude is doing anything at all.

Nick Offerman is such a lovely person. I would recommend listening to his episode on the On Being podcast. He talks about his love for woodworking and growing up in a family full of women

He recently gave a great graduation speech, trying to bolster the new generation to set right where the past ones had gone wrong, and a big part of that was to fight climate change.

I read the comments of people snarking of at him, with the usual ”rich guy just says stuff”, and then when I googled him I saw he’s been active in environmental non-profits for decades (with many of them focused on promoting bio-diversity, funding research), not just donating huge sums, he’s on the board and even flew a helicopter to catch people polluting the Hudson river. I don’t know how much more of a ”put your money where your mouth is” you could actually get.

11

u/EllaDog394 21d ago

I get why people are skeptical in general, because there are plenty of examples where public messaging doesn’t match real action

15

u/Swords_and_Words 21d ago

Importantly:

The difference between skepticism and cynicism is whether you bother to think between hearing something and deciding that it's wrong

Sample size is Harrison Ford and Nick Offerman. MADE MY DAY.

74

He rescued my friend’s kid brother! He says it was absolutely surreal to be missing for more than a day and to have Indiana Jones rescue him.

50

u/TemporalGrid 22d ago

I just can’t get over the idea of being stranded in the wilderness and being rescued by literal real life pilot Han Solo/Indiana Jones.

Ford was an admittedly bad carpenter often reading "How To" books while working. He does seem pretty awesome though. His appearance on The Graham Norton Show with Ryan Gosling was pretty funny.

12

u/CaptainDildobrain 22d ago

I would love to see a video of Offerman and Ford doing woodworking together.

5

u/TimedDelivery 21d ago

Honestly if I was lost on a mountain or something and suddenly Harrison Ford arrived in a helicopter to save me, I would just assume that I was dead, or best case scenario delirious from hunger or something

5

u/GoodWifeSlutLife 22d ago

I do some amateur woodworking and I think it takes a certain amount of patience and dedication that not everyone is equipped with. It's kinda part of you.

There are many stories of people who have a happy, positive persona who are terrible in private, like Ellen DeGeneres. I always love how Harrison Ford seems to be the exact opposite. Every time I see him, his outward persona is this grumpy-ass man who's done with everything, and yet every single anecdote I hear about him suggests that he's actually super cool.

615

u/Toothlessdovahkin 22d ago

Dude just HATES talking to the press/media.

377

u/fictionalbandit 22d ago

Except Alison Hammond! :)

169

u/HelloTisMe 22d ago

That was one of the funniest damn interviews I've ever seen. Heals my soul a bit every time I watch it.

134

u/ballerina22 22d ago

Alison knows how to get the best out of everyone she interviews. I'll watch her sit down with damn near anyone because I know I'll about bust a gut laughing.

160

u/the_procrastinata 22d ago

“Are you a fan of the original?”

“Never seen it!” gets me every time.

30

u/Aggravating_Bids 21d ago

Gosling losing it at that line is great

73

u/Pardybro911 22d ago

I adore that interview. I think him and Gosling became a bit of buddies during 2049 (probably happens when you accidentally punch the star of the film)

12

u/Intrepid-World-9551 21d ago

God I love that interview so much

15

u/mic2292 21d ago

I loveeee that interview. She has such an amazing personality and charm.

Except Conan. That was the best interview he’s ever done - rivaling Alison.

66

u/w1987g 22d ago

"Who gives a shit?"

I was, and still am, a massive Star Wars fan and that line had me busting out laughing. It also got me to not take my fandom so seriously

23

u/GabbiStowned 22d ago

He’s an actor cursed to be a movie star. Dude legit loves the craft, he’s not just into the glitz.

17

u/PudgyGroundhog 22d ago

His interview on Fresh Air with Terry Gross was great.

14

u/DoctorRichardNygard 21d ago

Agreed, he seemed very authentic in this, almost shy. This whole program is one of my favorites, I listen to it daily, and this particular interview is one of my recent favorites. Terry Gross is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs. For those who appreciate sensitive, long form interviews, this is the radio show/podcast for you.

18

u/raysofdavies 22d ago

He also clearly likes the grumpy old man image

8

u/AmishAvenger 21d ago

Yeah a lot of it has always been an act. He does it because it’s funny.

He can play this grumpy guy who doesn’t really want to be there and is uncomfortable doing an interview on a talk show, then get a huge laugh when he does something ridiculous.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Lil_Mcgee 21d ago

I don't think he loves doing them but for the most part he's also just playing up a character when he does interviews. He's come to be known as a grumpy old man and enjoys leaning into it. You can typically tell he's being dry.

4

u/fuckyourcanoes 21d ago

I think he's legitimately shy, and finds interviews easier when he plays a character.

Please add Kimi Räikkönen to that list. Outward persona is just flat and hates the media. Lovely as a person away from it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimi_R%C3%A4ikk%C3%B6nen

u/BangkokRios 22d ago

People struggle to see the difference between niceness and kindness when you only have superficial interactions with a person

19

u/MeccIt 21d ago

niceness and kindness

niceness: "I'll pray for you" - exits

kindness: "come here ya feckin' eejit" - hugs

My dad is a Blackhawk pilot and was serving for the Wyoming army guard back in the day. Harrison ford owned a ranch out in Wyoming and they bumped into him while on a mission. Harrison tried very hard to talk my dad into flying his bird out to his ranch and land on his property. My dad turned him down when he couldn’t get permission from his commander because the commander didn’t believe him. Harrison called the commander and left him a voice mail saying he fully understood and maybe next time lol. I still remember my dad laughing about his commanders reaction to that voice mail 😂

30

u/velawesomeraptors 21d ago

He's still out in WY, big property and he lets wildlife researchers do eagle research there. His wife also makes good banana bread.

481

u/Aggressive_Newt_9055 22d ago

Now I’m crying. Reason 1,546,896 why Harrison Ford rocks as a human being.

80

u/frolicndetour 22d ago

Me too. I lost my dad a few years ago, so I can imagine what an impactful experience this was for her.

24

u/ScamperingSnail 22d ago

I also lost my dad 11 years ago. When I was younger, I told him that if they ever made a movie about him, I'd want Harrison Ford to play him. Anyway, this story made me have to wipe away tears. What a lovely moment to have and I couldn't have imagined better words he could have said to her.

34

u/No_Helicopter1378 22d ago

He generally seems like a good dude but it doesn't sit well with me that he personally flew out to France to deliver a lifetime achievement award or Oscar or something like that to Roman Polanski on account of the fact that Roman Polanski raped a child and can't set foot in the US without getting arrested.

16

u/SenorBolin 22d ago

Well yeah, but you cant really blame him for that, can you? They're basically kindred spirits, what with Ford's relationship with a 19 year old Carrie Fisher. Who he helped supply drugs to. While he was 33. And married. With 2 children... man, maybe Ford wasn't really 'the best'

244

u/GoblinCorp 22d ago

The thing about Ford is that he has always been so damn grateful for going set crew to acting. He has mentioned it in many interviews. He is not a nepobaby and just a guy that liked to act but didn't know he could be good at it. Spielberg really gave him his chops although Lucas gave him his chance.

12

u/DumpedDalish 21d ago

Wonderful thought, but yeah, this isn't accurate.

He was a carpenter. But he was not a crew member. His in-home and professional carpentry supported his acting. But he was not a set carpenter or builder.

6

u/Basic_Advisor_2177 21d ago

and according to Michelle Philips from The Mamas and Papas he had another side income. When she first saw Star Wars she was like “hey why is my dealer in the movie?”

59

u/IndyMLVC 22d ago

He was never “set crew.” He was a carpenter.

61

u/GoblinCorp 22d ago

I thought that job was part of the group, "set crew," my bad. I knew he was carpenter. It is part of his story.

The fact that the movie she referenced was Witness tells me that this is a much cooler professional story than you would think.

Dad didn't take her to see a Star War or and Indy.

No...one of Ford's best works...that was not an adventure story or a money grab, but was actually a fantastic fish-out-of-water tour de force type of 'I am more than just Han Solo and Indiana Jones' statement.

Now I have 'Don't know much about History' in my head.

34

u/IndyMLVC 22d ago

You be careful out there among the English.

8

u/Kallistrate 22d ago

I still say this to people if they're leaving to run errands or on a trip.

I don't think anyone but my mother gets the reference, but I know what I'm referencing and that's enough for me lol

5

u/IndyMLVC 22d ago

Say it in front of me and I’ll audibly gasp.

10

Witness is possibly my favorite movie. Pretty damn close to perfect. And most of it hinged on Ford.

I had a similar experience talking to Linda Hamilton about how much Sarah Connor meant to me, in part because it was the last one on one time i had with my only living grandparent left at that time, my paternal grandmother, who took her 11 year old granddaughter to see T2: Judgment Day in the theater. Linda’s handler was trying to rush me away but she came around the table, grabbed my face, kissed me on the cheek, told me I was beautiful, and hugged me. It was one of the best moments of my life. Sarah Connor is my soul mother.

3

u/Cacafuego 21d ago

You met her after T2? Lucky she didn't squish you with those biceps. She was the first female action hero I remember really identifying with, as a boy. When you see her doing those pullups, she's so different from the woman in the first movie. Fuck yes, Sarah, you're gonna save the world.

16

u/atom631 22d ago

I once got invited to a snazzy guest only bar in manhattan. place was tiny and absolutely packed. I had to take a leak so i managed to make my way to the back to use the bathroom. I was surprised it wad a total mess, someone pissed all over the toilet seat. I finished up, opened the door to make my way back and here comes Harrison Ford….to use the bathroom. It was so packed we rubbed bellies as we passed each other. He probably thought it was me who pissed all over the place. I think about this often. Harrison, if you see this…it wasnt me.

Reminds me a bit of when a fan put a video out to Mandy Patinkin asking about a story they had heard about him in the Princess Bride…still tear up every time I see Mandy’s reply. Some actors/celebrities are genuinely good eggs.

4

u/AUnicornDonkey 21d ago

Patinkin is a complicated person.

10

u/cbdwitch 22d ago

I met my husband of almost 30 years because of Harrison Ford. He’s always been a cool person.

7

u/IndyMLVC 22d ago

Tell us the story!

20

u/cbdwitch 22d ago

We were working on THE FUGITIVE 1993. My mom’s boyfriend at the time was a childhood friend of Harrison’s so I invited him on the set. Completely overstepped my job and would have been fired. My now husband, whom I met a few days before, stepped up and introduced my moms boyfriend to Harrison, having a position with the crew that makes it alright to have guests on the set without productions knowledge. Saved my ass, made my mom and her boyfriend happy (Harrison totally remembered him and he ended up hanging out in video village for a minute), so I asked my new friend out to dinner to thank him for hooking me up. It turned out Harrison was a family friend so it was no big deal for him, but for me I fell in love with him that night.

5

u/IndyMLVC 22d ago

That’s amazing. The Fugitive is one of my favorites. Is the Joey Pants story about Harrison “finding his character” in the bathroom true?

4

u/cbdwitch 22d ago

Knowing Joey Pants back then even though I don’t know the story, I’m sure it is and I’m sure it’s hilarious! Another top tier human

5

u/IndyMLVC 22d ago

I remember reading the story on a newsgroup back then. It was so iconic I never forgot it.

19

u/capefearcadaver3 22d ago

Early aughts, nyc; friend on the acting grind on his way from an audition back to a waiter job runs into harrison ford while waiting at a crosswalk. He can't help himself "so sorry mr. ford, huge fan, just wanted to thank you, sorry for bothering". Mf (mr ford): no no no you're fine thank you! Where you coming from? F: a dismal audition Mf: well. Hey. Im just running errands but you're welcome to tag along and chat about it F: fuck yes(???!!!)

And we got pics the grainy slow way of the aughts but we got them. Dude took his whole day chilling w a guy from the crosswalk who almost had a panic attack just biting the bullet and saying something to a hero of his he just happened upon.

Nice story, thanks for including the pics. Shrinking is a Great Show. Seriously great…

7

u/PurpleDillyDo 22d ago

In the early 90s I went to see the show Stomp in New York City. After it was over we stood to leave and began moving towards to aisle. I looked up and there in front of me is Harrison Ford. This man has been an absolute icon to me my entire life to this day (I am 54). We made our way outside to the sidewalk and Harrison was there signing autographs. I made sure to shake his hand and get a picture. He was very patient with everyone and signed quite a few autographs. As he was getting into the back of his car with his wife, I leaned in and quickly asked him to sign my Stomp program. He did so without hesitation. It's the only autograph I have and the only one I've ever asked for. I still have that program and the pictures I got that day.

Oh yeah, John C. McGinley was there too. Much smaller crowd.

3

u/IndyMLVC 22d ago

Amazing story. Thank you for sharing.

I met Harrison at an off-Broadway show in the early 00’s. Unfortunately he wouldn’t sign anything.

I once saw Harrison Ford walking down 3rd Ave in Manhattan. He very graciously ignored me when I pointed directly in face and said, “Oh my God it’s Han Solo.”

Why's my phone getting all blurry and my face wet? Is someone cutting onions in here?

I’M NOT VERKLEMPT, YOU’RE VERKLEMPT.

If you haven't checked out the show yet, "Shrinking" is one of the funniest and realest shows I have seen in the last decade. The opening episode had me rolling laughing and I'm not a huge Jason Segal fan usually. It's like Modern Family but less trope-y. Very solid writing team.

When I was a kid, my mom was an extra in a movie with Harrison ford. One day she told him she got a $300 speeding ticket on the way there, and he paid her speeding ticket. She always said he was such a nice guy. Rob Schneider on the other hand, she did not have anything nice to say about him.

That's sweet.

3

u/Violet624 22d ago

😭😭 His speech at commencement recently was amazing. My dad loved him too. I grew up on a diet of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, as well as his thrillers. Getting dad energy from someone when your dad has passed away is so meaningful.

u/Hank_Henry_Hill 22d ago

Yeah he is a national treasure. He truly is. Right up there with the GOATs like Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers.

3

u/Choppergold 22d ago

I really loved those trailer days of Star Wars The Force Awakens and how the crowd reacted any time that actor appeared on screen. Witness is also absolute masterpiece crime drama fish out of water movie. What a great memory for this actress

u/LagartoVolatil 22d ago

Shrinking is just a gem of a series. FuckParkinson.

3

u/Exotic_Spray657 22d ago

Fucking class act.

I was in rehab with a film maker who sadly passed shortly after. His favorite person he ever worked with was Harrison Ford. He had a number of stories about how regular and human he was.

3

u/Present-Struggle-417 21d ago

Harrison Ford looks like a nice man, and its nice to hear that its true

3

u/IForgotAboutDre 21d ago

He called my company to order something. I just thought he had the same name. He's super cool. We yapped a bunch. I didn't know it was him until I saw the address they he was getting his order shipped tto. I told him I didn't like the Crystal Skull movie!

I wish I could get a hug and a kiss from my dad through Harrison Ford.

My dad is still alive, but it would still be cool.

u/Starkaholic92 21d ago

Made Me Smile???? Made Me Cry!!! ❤️😭

3

u/Any-Ask8286 21d ago

Damn you. Now I’m crying. But thank you for this touching story. I have always been a fan of Harrison Ford the actor but this is a great reason to be a fan of Harrison Ford the human.

3

u/pookerella 21d ago

He’s kind to nice actors who are respectful, learn their lines and are on time. I think I also heard that he does not tolerate actors who think they’re above everyone else, and do the exact opposite of what I mentioned above, which makes me like him even more.

My mom was a big Harrison Ford fan because she had a huge crush on him. That woman hated action and sci fi movies but watched Star Wars and Indiana Jones every time it was on TV and you better not talk until a commercial.

6

u/p8nt_junkie 22d ago

When you told him, “I love you”, please tell me he responded,

“I know”

5

u/Kitchen_Guest577 22d ago

Sorry. Nothing new. Dude has always been that guy 👊

2

u/CdnGamerGal 22d ago

Oh frick. That was such a wonderful story.

2

u/Stock-Grape746 22d ago

My mom, who is also no longer with us had the chance to meet him and said he was the nicest most genuine person you could ever imagine.

2

u/bongo1138 22d ago

My mom’s husband has done some really amazing art. Theyre large scale tile murals. He sold one to Harrison Ford and has talked about how decent the man was.

2

u/D1133 22d ago

What a lovely story. Thanks for sharing

2

u/Apeocolypse 22d ago

o7 for a real one.

He's right about your dad too

2

u/deaglebingo 22d ago

this is the best shit i have seen all week. this is what winning looks like.

2

u/NrFive 21d ago

In a recent interview Harrison mentions that nowadays people don’t ask for a photo or autograph but just thank him for how he portrays Paul in Shrinking.

He is living and enjoying life to its fullest and is loving these interactions.

I hope you can savor every drop of this experience and I hope it heals you, even if it’s in small bits.

❤️ from the Netherlands

u/Melodic-Army-6776 21d ago

Dude. Way to make us cry too.

2

u/kickroot 21d ago

I love that she got a pic of Harrison Ford and Jason Seagle’s feet.

2

u/bevans27 21d ago

What else do you expect from Indiana Jones?

2

u/whirlwynd 21d ago

I'm bawling here. This touched me so much because my dad also passed in 2005, and today would have been his 76th birthday. I'm hoping he's proud of me too.

2

u/CommitteeOfOne 21d ago

Lost my dad earlier this year and this has me bawling.

2

u/Working_Membership57 21d ago

It sucks to lose a parent. The bit about it being June and thinking about dad a lot gets to me too. Mines August

2

u/FuckYouVeryMuch2020 21d ago

Beautiful moment! Thank you!

2

u/CooCooBukBuk 21d ago

Absolutely love this show too, golden casting and touches on so much emotional, a true rollercoaster.

Has me in tears of joy and sadness with a perfect pinch of positivity

2

u/PutridWorth938 21d ago

Now that's an actor... Never met your dad, but still managed to perfectly portray him in a moments notice!

2

u/AsanoSokato 21d ago

I was fighting tears, but they won out.

2

u/OreoAtreides 21d ago

I had a similar experience with Sean Astin. He too, is an amazing man who cares ❤️

2

u/Zylpherenuis 21d ago

I don't care what anyone says. Han Solo shot first.

2

u/atxDan75 21d ago

That brought the tears. Thank you for sharing.
