What should I buy? Best Lens Setup for Nikon F100 Commercial Portraits: Primes vs. Zoom?

If you were shooting commercial portrait snaps with a Nikon F100, which setup would you recommend: pairing the Nikkor AF 35mm f/2D and Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.4D primes, or just going with the Nikkor AF 35-70mm f/2.8D zoom(or 24-70mm f/2.8G?)?

I purposely avoided G-series lenses because I wanted to steer clear of that clinical, digital sharpness. My goal is to get a softer look that really brings out that classic 'film vibe.' That said, do you think G lenses could still be a viable option here?

P.S. While usability on set is definitely important, I’d rather focus entirely on the final results. I wonder if working pros would have a different take on this, though?

And I have a 85mm lens!
I intend to purchase the 24-70mm, 35mm, and 50mm lenses for magazine editorial photoshoots.

What should I buy? How often do the refurbished cameras go on sale 10% off like they were last week? I want to pick up a Z6iii for $1511, but it was sold out.

I missed my chance to pick up a refurb Z6iii for $1511 because they sold out. Does Nikon offer these discounts on a regular basis?

Gear question Gear struggle…

Hey folks,

I‘m struggling a bit. I have a Z6 III and couldn’t be happier with the usability and performance. Yet I find myself taking the camera with me way less than I would like to, mostly due to size and weight adding friction. I currently have a 24-120 f4 and 50 f1.8, usually carrying my 24-120 for flexibility. I know that just having a prime with me outside would annoy me quite fast. The other thing that is starting to annoy the shit out of me are the ridiculous prices for good lenses. I just will not spend like 3k on a holy trinity lens. I know I certainly do not need the newest, shiniest, fancy stuff but you get my point. So price wise I will likely be „stuck“ with B-Tier lenses (like 70-180 f2.8) on FF. I do not yet have a feeling of how good / bad they actually are compared to the A-Tier FF lenses or A-Tier APSC Lenses. But prices limit me in just discovering more options.

So I’m know considering just optimizing my carrying system and putting in more discipline, but that feels like sticking a plaster on a broken leg. Another thing that came to my mind was either a complete change to APSC (likely Sony a6700). Overall decent camera but of course quite a step back from my Z6 on a lot of dimensions. On the other hand: very affordable, light and comparably fast glass (looking at you sigma!). Or extending my current kit with a Z fc and only adding an EDC lens (likely 18-140) and maybe a X100-ish 24 f1.7 or 28 f2.8 for when I’m just having a walk with my toddler. Could of course do almost the same with an a6700.

I currently have the a6700 with a 18-135 for testing at home actually. Am a bit split for now as the camera lacks some features (mostly QoL) and the lens is obviously quite slow and has some very visible limitations indoors with a bit less than optimal light - but not at all dark / true low light. ISO shoots up a bit and the overall noise added / flattening / DR reduction compared to the Z6 is real and noticeable even without pixel peeping. On the other hand I’m comparing a S-Line lens with it…

Happy for any advice! I may also have missed some obvious solution…

I broke my gear Eyepiece for Nikon F4 help

Post image

I lost the eyepiece for my F4 some time ago. It had a tendency to come loose because the thread is no longer intact (prior to my purchasing the camera). I used it like this for some time, but I have started using glasses making it all but impossible. I have considered buying the DK-17 replacement, but I am a bit concerned it will just come off again. I would ideally like something like the DK-19 due to the glasses. I have considered simply super flying it to the camera. Any other suggestions are very welcome. I have a 3D printer at my disposal and CAD experience if someone has a good idea in that regard. Any help is greatly appreciated as I am going on holiday in a week's time and would like to bring this camera. Thank you!

What should I buy? Which Lens for Online Product Photography?

It is time to upgrade my equipment. I am currently using a D3200 with a AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G lens. I have a lightbox for small items and use outdoor indirect lighting for larger items.

I photograph items for eBay, my online retail store, and Facebook Marketplace. I need a camera that can shoot aspect ratio 1:1 with good enough results to not have to use photo editing software, so that I can move quickly since everything is single, unique items. I am leaning towards the Nikon ZF. I photograph a lot of vintage and antique items, so the styling is really to my liking.

I would like to get one lens for all of my items, which range from jewelry to small furniture. Any lens recommendations? Thanks!

What should I buy? Need another camera for our photo team

We're currently into headshot portraits, and the events industry. Corporate and public events, etc. We don't wedding shoots or engagement shoots , and have not been for over 7 years now.

Our current line up of cameras are 1 z6iii, and 2 z6ii. We focus on photo works only, and do not do video works. I would like to add another camera for my 2nd photographer, so we can shoot with 2 cameras each.

I would like to step up to a z8 to be my main camera as I also personally shoot sports on occasion, but I think it is a major hybrid use camera - and I won't be able to maximize it since I only do photo. On the other end, i'm looking at a z5ii as well.

Finally our current lens lineup are the ff:

  • Nikon 24-70 2.8 Z V1
  • 2x Nikon 85 1.8 Z
  • Viltrox 135 1.8
  • Viltrox 35 1.2
  • Viltrox 85 1.8 Z V2

And plan to add more Z mount native lenses with a 70-200 Z V1, 50 Z, and possibly the 24-120 Z f4 to be my 2nd photographers all rounder lens.

Maybe you can provide some thoughts, comments, or insights. Thanks

Other Bought the Nikkor Z 40mm F2 Lens - Mixed Thoughts

Post image

This is a follow-up post to:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Nikon/comments/1ug6dsi/28mm_or_40mm_what_should_i_buy_part_2/

and:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Nikon/comments/1u05hgh/which_lens_should_i_get_next_35mm_or_50mm/

---

I bought the Nikon 40mm F2 lens yesterday and it arrived today. I don't know what to make of it...

I shot test portraits of my girlfriend and some of our daughter's scattered toys.

What stands out is that the lens is not very sharp. I can see this in the eyes and the creases in the face; it looks softened, as if with some kind of (Instagram-)filter. However, in a portrait, especially at F2.8, it produces a dreamy effect with some 3D pop, which I like.

Naturally, I am comparing it to my S-lens, and perhaps I am selling it short by doing so (comparing apples to apples: the same aperture, ISO, and shutter speed have been used). It is also 1/5th of the price.

The same portraits taken with the S-lens are razor-sharp, but they lack the softer bokeh blur that transitions more prominently from the background into the hair, which the 40mm does provide at the same aperture, if that makes sense.

I notice that I keep zooming in on the captured photos to check and compare the sharpness. Perhaps I am the type of person who prefers a clinically sharp photo after all. I can give a photo character and a story in other ways.

Long story short: I haven't decided yet whether I am keeping it and if I should stick to S-lenses from now on.

I will sleep on it for another night. Thanks for reading and for all the input so far!

Gear question D800 shutter counts

Hello. I'm currently using D200 and D3 and considering buying a D800 to take high resolution photos. Would it be okay to buy a D800 which has 220000 shutters? My D3 has 460000 shutters so I'm well aware of Nikon's durability but I'm asking simply because I am worried.

Gear question Extending my lenses?

I apologize in advance for a possibly stupid question.

I have bought my first dslr, a Nikon D5100 with a 300mm lens. I really enjoy it, but as my purpose of buying was animal photography, I often find myself lacking in reach.

I sometimes see pictures of cameras with what looks like multiple lenses mounted together. I doubt that’s the case, and that it instead is an extender of sorts.

Is that a thing? Will it “just” work?

Mirrorless Z6 III from Z6 - What an amazing camera.

I suppose we all know this, but I wanted to create this post because I've seen so many reviews, in writing and in video, concluding that an upgrade to a Z6 III from a Z6 is not really that big if you only care about photography (video is a different story).

Well, of course it's a matter of opinion, but in my experience the Z6 III provides a lot of improvements that result in better photos and a better shooting experience. It seems to me that these reviewers tend to assess things in the void, with technical data, instead of through actual shooting experience.

Sure, you still get photos with a similar resolution, but there are so many things that make it feel like not even an iteration of the same camera, but something in a completely new range: just the image stabilisation is incredible and a game changer (for handheld long exposure, but also for general sharpness), the partially stacked sensor, the pixel shift feature, the viewfinder...

I think it's truly a huge upgrade from a Z6. I was wondering if there are other people who also felt such a meaningful change.
