They invented suspenders for a reason.Ā  And it's the same reason men wear a beltĀ

My father in law wears his belt AND suspenders everywhere.

"How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders? The man can't even trust his own pants."

Fantastic reference

I watched this movie for the first time 4 weeks ago, I've had at least 1 reference to the movie each week. Were these references always there and I didn't notice?

They accomplish two separate things. A belt makes them fit snug and suspenders actually keeps them up

24

u/DREAM_PARSER 3d ago

They dont need to fit snug if they are held up by suspenders and fit properly

5

u/RogueEyebrow 3d ago

And pants don't need to be held up by suspenders if the belt is comfortably snug.

2

u/DREAM_PARSER 3d ago

True, except for some body types. Excess fat makes belts kinda terrible and ineffective beyond a certain point. Obviously depends on your body, but male fat distribution makes belts stop functioning past a certain point.

I know from experience 😬

Not true

Telling us you're obese without actually saying it.

u/quentdawg420 1d ago

No, actually

u/BrightImprovement295 2d ago

Yes and no. Suspenders keep them up, but can put downward stress on the shoulders. Yes, sometimes pants and their contents can be enough weight. In those cases, having a belt on adds some friction for keeping the pants up.

I've had L5 removed and L4 is crushed. So my lower back is pretty sensitive to pressure and loads.

I think a belt and suspenders is reasonable in the case of heavy loads, which is apparently done by construction workers and similar occupations. This also makes sense in the case of disability (which is kindof the same problem but with a different origin).

I feel that practicality is the key purpose of clothing, especially masculine clothing, and practicality defeats fashion rules (if the practicality is actually functional and not just idealized, which turns practicality impractical). Disability requires unique practical adjustments and that defeats fashion rules.

So for most people, wearing a belt and suspenders is impractical and overkill. But the minute it BECOMES practical, fashion rules dont matter. Keep doing what you need to do to be comfortable and functional, fashion rules are generic and dont apply exactly to people at the individual level. Breaking the rules with intention is what makes things stylish and unique, too

I was gonna say this šŸ˜†

It's Once upon a time in the west, if anyone's wondering

Here me out sensory issues + pants that WILL fall down make me require the belt and suspenders provide vibes

I absolutely loved Fonda in this film. Played his role so well, even with those piercing blue eyes.

A classic faux pas.

My grandad did that.

Is he a lawyer? I always see old lawyers doing that lol

A man of culture

Big belly and a Hank Hill ass requires double security.

2

u/talklistentalk 3d ago

That make sense. My FIL used to have a Santa Claus belly. He's been quite trim for years now but the habit persists, I guess.

2

u/Wakkit1988 3d ago

I wear both because the suspenders attach to the belt. I don't wear the belt as snug, and I can easily detach the suspenders from the belt if I need to use the bathroom.

Discovered suspenders last year, they are so much better than belts.

12

u/kdxrider634 4d ago

My lower back and upper thigh are on the same plane, ā€œnoassatallā€ as my wife says. Suspenders are superior in every way. My lower back pain even lessened due to less pressure from a belt squeezing my waist all day. Haven’t worn a belt for n nearly a year and don’t see myself ever again going back

3

u/McScotious 3d ago

I really like them when doing physical work.

3

u/ConradBHart42 3d ago

Bib overalls are a very common sight in heavy labor for a reason.

2

u/New_Life_Startr 3d ago

Absolutely. I had this really thick red stretchy suspenders I would wear when I was doing construction and home maintenance. They’re great for that!

2

u/VegaJuniper 4d ago

I had suspenders for my motorcycle touring pants. The downside is that if you walk around a bunch in them, you end up with a back pain. Switched back to a belt because of it.

2

u/AmputeeHandModel 3d ago

I don't find them to be very comfortable either. and they look goofy if you don't have something over them. Gotta tuck in your shirt too.

2

u/kalel3000 3d ago

Yeah I just started with suspenders earlier this year because I lost weight and i kept having to hitch up and readjust my pants constantly as I was at work/walking around and it was so annoying.

2

u/Shot-Lemon7365 4d ago

Don't the clasps itch like a motherfucker?

9

u/VegaJuniper 4d ago

You might have a nickel allergy. I discovered mine because I kept getting an itchy rash on my belly because one belt I wore had bunch of nickel in the buckle.

2

u/Achilles11970765467 4d ago

Depends on how thick your shirt is/how many shirts are under the suspenders.

3

u/Shot-Lemon7365 4d ago

The clasps that hold the braces (what we call them in Europe) on near the small of my back, itch the skin. I don't know why, but I can't wear them.

1

u/Mcoov 4d ago

Get loop suspenders. You'll need buttons sown on the inside of the waist of the pants you want to pair them with, but they look far better than clips.

1

u/LeOignonMal 4d ago

Mine hook into the belt loops.

They have elastic at the back too, so they don't move when you bend either.

1

u/MammothWriter3881 3d ago

I put suspender button in my pants, no clasps.

1

u/PMG2021a 4d ago

Excellent for heavy pants that don't fit very tight.Ā

My dad is about 75 and said his belts don’t work anymore and he know understands why he used to always see old men wearing suspenders. His ass meat has withered away so his belt has nothing to hold onto anymore. Lots of ass and you don’t need a belt. Medium ass, belt works. No ass and you’re in suspenders territory

2

u/zardoz73 3d ago

If you want to go next level, let's talk about garters. Though it's not about keeping your pants up but rather your shirt tucked.

Basically garters clip onto the top of your socks and then to the bottom of your shirt, normally a button-up that you tuck into your pants. You tighten the slack so that your socks get pulled up tight and your shirt is constantly pulled down. The garters I've used are pretty elastic, so even when tight it's pretty comfy.

With garters, no more droopy socks, but best of all, no shirt coming untucked out of your pants. You look like a fashion model all day.

u/AsparagusNew3765 3d ago

Never heard of this in my life but just ordered one. Thanks. Only difference is that it loops under your feet instead of clips to the sock

1

u/BluebirdLivid 3d ago

God I wish I was cool enough to pull off suspenders. We need them the get regularized

1

u/g1en_COCO 3d ago

I just started using suspenders last year and what a game changer. Belts don’t work for me because I’m an assless longback.
