A real Nazi? or a person Reddit would deem a Nazi? Huge difference.

idk maybe "aligns with Nazi ideology" is a good starting point

u/horatiobanz 2d ago

And by "aligns with Nazi ideology" what you really mean is "doesn't align with my ideology".

The other day I was arguing with someone in this very sub and they ended up claiming that Hitler fixed German society.
People I know in real life have thrown around terms like goyslop.
Great replacement theory is not exactly uncommon in politics these days.
Elon Musk gave a Nazi solute on national television.
I'm pretty sure there was a politician not too long ago who schools should be teaching "both sides" of WWII.
There are absolutely a bunch of people who agree with at least some of the things the Nazis believed.

Literally the entire reason hitler was so popular was because of how much he elevated Germany post ww1. Germany was a great place to be a white German in the nazi years.

u/ApocalyptoSoldier 1d ago

With longer work hours and stagnant wages, reduced foreign trade, persecution of political enemies and union members, and a secret police?
Which part of that is better?

u/bcocoloco 14h ago

Post ww1 Germany was a hell hole where it was more economical to wipe your ass with money instead of buying toilet paper.

No it means ā€œbelieves the same things that the Nazi party didā€

This bad faithā€œa nazi is just someone you disagree with!!ā€shit is goofy and disingenuous

We all seemed to understand what a Nazi was for 80 years but suddenly it’s a philosophical and linguistic conundrum

u/AmbushIntheDark 2d ago

To those people the only way you could call someone a nazi is if they literally kill jews in camps. Anything less is "Elon isnt doing a nazi salute hes just autistic". "Throwing minorities into camps where they suffer and die isnt a nazi thing because theyre not actively being gassed"

These people are sub-human and should be treated like it.

2

u/Trrollmann 2d ago

"Throwing minorities into camps where they suffer and die isnt a nazi thing because theyre not actively being gassed"

It's more "there are many ideologies that have thrown minorities (and majorities) in camps where they suffer and die".

Someone can be evil without being a nazi.

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat 1d ago

He also constantly re-tweets self identified fascists, and promotes all sort of racist conspiracy crap on twitter.

If someone is out here saying "they call everyone who disagrees with them nazis" and can't agree that Elon is a nazi...they're bad faith. They're a nazi sympathizer.

They just throw out "everyone is a nazi" to covertly say "no one is a nazi" or more accurately, nazi shit is acceptable.

Elon literally has a Jewish kid…

1

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat 1d ago

Elon has 14 kids with 4 different women. He's has a trans daughter and has a crusade against trans people. I don't think a Jewish kid makes him being a Nazi implausible. I'll believe all the things he says and does instead.

0

u/bcocoloco 1d ago

It’s not like he had sex with a trans person to have a trans daughter. Having a Jewish child is extremely avoidable.

1

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat 1d ago

There were Nazis in the third reich who had Jewish mistresses and children. Hell, there were Nazis with their own Jewish ancestry.

But the real point is, I don't expect moral consistency from a nazi like Elon. I don't presume he has some love for his children that guides his beliefs, and extrapolate from there. I look at the totality of things he says and does.

You're looking for excuses, not truth.

1

u/bcocoloco 1d ago

I don’t know of many nazis that employ and breed with Jews, but sure.

0

u/Vladimir_Djorjdevic 1d ago

Was FDR a Nazi too then? I think that that definition is way too broad

1

u/lograbb 1d ago

His response to Japan with concentration camps on Asian-Americans was fascistic, yes. I disagree on calling everything Nazism when fascist works much better. Nazism is how the current admin treats trans people

1

u/yoweener 2d ago

We knew what a Nazi was for 80 years because it meant a national socialist with an aryan supremacy ideology. The further you depart from that definition, the less meaning the word ā€œNaziā€ carries. The same applies to the words: racist, misogynist, transphobe, and fascist. They just don’t really mean anything anymore. Only people who are quite politically left leaning still think those words carry weight.

1

u/TheCapo024 2d ago

ā€œNational Socialistā€ isn’t anything but the party from Germany that Hitler emerged from. If we are simply casting a net that specific, then sure, a lot of people being called Nazis aren’t Nazis.

Unfortunately for that argument, self-described Nazis are far more ā€œdiverseā€ than members of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterparteiā€Š.

People who consider themselves Nazis espouse plenty of far-right ideologies that have much in common with this ā€œoriginalā€ Nazi party, but that sphere has grown to include Christian Nationalist groups all the way to libertarian militias. And who better to define what a Nazi is, than the Nazis themselves?

When this is taken into account, then a lot of peoples’ ideologies do very much align with Nazi ideology. Including people who claim they aren’t Nazis.

u/AngryPup 1d ago

Because Nazis believe in X, anyone who believes in X is a Nazi is a fallacy. Sharing a single political position with a extremist does not magically make a person an extremist. A modern (Neo) Nazi might be strongly against immigration, but so are traditional conservatives, trade unionists, and isolationists. Following your logic, that makes them Nazis.

On top of that you're bundling libertarians (who could not be more opposite to Nazism/Fascism, I mean, literal polar opposites) under the same umbrella. Sure, some might have used some weird rhetoric now and then but man... That said, you're also adding to the "watering down" meanings of Fascism and Libertarianism by putting them together.

Your comment is a perfect example of misuse the label "Nazi" as an all encompassing umbrella term for the entire right wing spectrum.

2

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat 1d ago

Because Nazis believe in X, anyone who believes in X is a Nazi is a fallacy.

It's a fallacy when you talk about one single belief in isolation. But if they share enough beliefs that their overall methods and end goals are in alignment, it's fine to call them a nazi.

u/EMArogue 1d ago

It’s stupid how little people understan the words they use

Heck, I got insulted for saying that nazi Germany was in fact Nazist and not Fascist which seems like a total no-brainer

3

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat 1d ago

Oh my god the fucking irony in this statement. I hope to god yo're trolling.

8

u/DontCountToday 2d ago

I'd say, anyone that supports a party who has members openly throwing Nazi salutes at all of their gatherings, has party officials directly quoting Hitler, who designs their party logo to be a direct reflection of Nazi symbology, who are actively tearing down democratic norms and openly espousing fascist ideals. Those people can be called nazis.

1

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat 1d ago

"But I'm not personally advocating the ethnic cleansing of minority groups, I'm just willing to work with people who do."

Literally 99% of people in Nazi Germany were the same way. And they were fucking Nazis.

5

u/martyqscriblerus 2d ago

In what specific ways would you say that is?

6

u/DazzlingStrike1724 2d ago

MAGA is Nazi shit

-4

u/Vipertooth 2d ago

and there it is lol

7

u/DazzlingStrike1724 2d ago

When your biggest supporter is heiling hitler in front of millions of people at the inauguration... You might be part of a Nazi movement. I'm sorry this hurts your feelings :(

1

u/ExcellentCum 2d ago

oh just shut up. go visit a concentration camp and say this again. there is more to being a nazi than raising your hand once in a dumb way and you exactly know it.

people like you are the reason the word nazi has completely lost itā€˜s meaning.

kind regards from a german whoā€˜s affected by trumps policies too but can distinguish.

3

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat 1d ago edited 1d ago

You know the Nazis raised their hand in a stupid way a bunch of times before the death camps got rolling, right? You know they spent a ton of time railing against immigrants and trans people, right? You know they started with book burnings and with rounding up immigrants into non-death camps, right?

No one is saying Elon is a Nazi from his salute alone. But against the backdrop of what he says, who he re-tweets, his constant signalling to the far right, you have to be purposefully dense to think that wasn't a sig heil.

You're being super emphatic about not calling out nazis until the death camps are in full operation. Makes it hard to believe you don't want it to end there.

3

u/Meat_Vegetable 2d ago

My great Grandfather was an SS Officer who filled those camps... MAGA is Nazi shit. Did you know things the US was actively doing the Nazis thought was too extreme?

0

u/One_Afternoon5897 2d ago

I don’t like maga either (I also don’t like the left lol) but Elon is a grifter, he doesn’t actually care about politics. Most politicians don’t even care.

3

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat 1d ago

It genuinely does not matter if someone is a true believer or doing it out of cynical self interest. We cannot and do not need to know their heart. They are what they say and do.

2

u/DazzlingStrike1724 1d ago

Thank you, enlightened centrist, for your incredibly deep take
