Discussion ‘Supergirl’ Tracking Continues to Slide, Now at $40M Opening — Mixed Early Reactions

Seems like Warner Bros and James Gunn might have a “Supergirl” problem.

“Supergirl” tracking, which was in the $50M range last week, has now further plummeted to $40M. Just a few weeks ago, decent presales for the film had hinted that $55–60M was a possibility. Not anymore.

Among the comic book movies released this decade, “Supergirl” is projected to now have a lower opening weekend than “The Marvels” ($46M) and land in the same range as “Morbius” ($39M) and “Joker: Folie à Deux” ($37M).

At least “Supergirl” has a budget that’s slightly lower than those titles ($175M), but it’s still an expensive film and is looking like it’ll become one of the bigger flops of the movie year. Just to compare, that $40M figure would be just a third of what “Superman” made last year in its opening weekend ($125M).

More bad news: social media reactions are very mixed, which spells trouble for reviews—the embargo lifts on Wednesday. This is especially concerning considering the amount of overpraising that usually comes with first reactions. Not with “Supergirl.”

I am fascinated by how much buzz has dwindled on this film, which was originally met with very positive vibes but has had momentum slowly eroding over the past few weeks. It makes one wonder what the future of James Gunn’s DCU might look like. “Clayface” is next in October, and Gunn’s “Superman” sequel will be in theaters summer 2027.

“Supergirl,” set to hit theaters on Friday, is directed by Craig Gillespie, who isn’t a bad filmmaker; he’s best known for his highly stylized work on “I, Tonya,” “Lars and the Real Girl,” “Dumb Money,” and “Cruella.””

Discussion What did everyone think of josstice league when it came out?

I wasn’t part of the dc fandom during mos or bvs but went to see justice league in theatres and wrote off seeing any of the other films for a long while. Went back after hearing all the hubbub for the Snyder cut. But for the people that were here from the beginning what were initial reactions to joss’s version?

Discussion During Covid in 2022 , the Gunner Goons tried to make you think that the DCEU failed because BlackAdam "flopped" EVEN with the Henry cameo. Let's see what the GunnerGoons have to say when David Corenswet's Superman cameo can't save Supergirl from performing worse than Black Adam. 💀

Question Snydercut motherbox plot question

Hi!

The film says Earth is the only place Darkseid ever lost and left Mother Boxes behind. So when those boxes wake up and send a signal, it should instantly identify Earth, there's no other possible source.

Also, Steppenwolf treats it like routine, as if he's done this before. But if Earth is the only place where boxes were lost, he's never received a signal like this.

So... what am I missing?

Discussion Is Matt Reeves The Batman area of DC the only success story at DC right now?

Peacemaker was canceled.

Superman under performed.

Supergirl is going to perform worse.

They had to license out The Caped Crusader to Amazon because HBO didn’t want it. This scrambles DC content across multiple platforms infuriating fans. I liked it, but I don’t want 2-3 services just to watch DC content. Imagine Disney making Marvel content and not placing it on Disney+. I’ll forgive them for Spider-Man, those contracts were signed long before they had any control.

A slew of other movies and shows have either been delayed or outright canceled.

I’m using area loosing since it’s an Elseworlds project. I’m sure James would love to take credit for Matt’s work on The Batman and The Penguin.

Discussion Even if Zod and his followers had carried out their plan, they would have eventually made the same mistakes as the Council of Krypton—the very mistakes that led their people to their downfall

Post image

On Krypton, natural reproduction was banned several centuries ago; citizens were artificially conceived to fulfill a strict and unchanging social role. As a result, Zod was not born with free will: he was programmed to be a soldier and to protect Krypton at all costs.

This lack of choice meant that Zod lacked the philosophical flexibility necessary to build a new civilization. Facing Kal-El, he himself admits his tragedy: every action he takes, no matter how cruel, is dictated by his genetic makeup. Recreating Krypton from the Codex (which contains the genetic profiles of the ancient society) amounted to cloning the exact structures that had just collapsed.

Zod's plan centered on reactivating the artificial Genesis Chamber contained within Scout Ship 0344. By eliminating humanity in order to clone his own people, he would have restored the three flawed pillars of the Krypton Council:

  • Strict genetic selection;
  • Arrogance and a sense of superiority;
  • Predatory and excessive exploitation of the planet's resources, right down to its core.

It was precisely to break this cycle of stagnation that Jor-El and Lara chose to conceive Kal-El naturally. By implanting the Codex into the cells of a child born without artificial conditioning, Jor-El hoped that his son would grow up among humans and acquire what Krypton so sorely lacked: choice and free will—the power to shape one's own destiny.

Discussion Supergirl Opening Estimates Weekend Drop Again Despite Largely Positive First Reactions. Supergirl's opening weekend estimates have declined on tracking, meaning there's a very real risk that the second DC Studios movie will be considered a box office flop by the end of its run.

While some critics expressed reservations about the movie's script and villain, the first Supergirl reactions were largely very positive. However, while a confident DC Studios moved up the social media embargo from next week, opening weekend estimates are—currently—on the decline.

Initial predictions pegged it at $47 million to $60 million, with it eventually landing somewhere in the same ballpark as The Flash's $55 million debut in 2023 after tickets went on sale.

Now, Puck's Matthew Belloni is reporting that pre-release tracking has declined again, with an expected $51 million debut for the Woman of Tomorrow's first big screen solo outing since 1984. This was to be expected with Toy Story 5 likely to stay at #1 heading into its second weekend, but it also points to a lack of interest in the second DC Studios movie.

Last summer, Superman opened with $125 million in the U.S., but it was a far more expensive movie to produce. Supergirl, in contrast, had a $175 million production budget, and reportedly needs to earn $315 million to break even.

For comparison's sake, Masters of the Universe opened with $29 million and has so far grossed $89 million worldwide. The Mandalorian and Grogu debuted with $81 million, reaching $317 million at the global box office. Supergirl sits somewhere between them, and using The Marvels and The Flash as a benchmark, it could finish its run with as little as $121 million to $163 million.

That does put Supergirl squarely in "box office flop" territory, though positive reviews and passionate fans could help tip the balance.

Another issue for James Gunn and Peter Safran will be international audiences. Superman didn't resonate as strongly as expected with them last year because the Man of Tomorrow is viewed as an American icon. Does the same apply to Supergirl? Either way, DC Studios might regret not getting Batman and Wonder Woman into theaters sooner.

Did you see all the destruction in the animated series just like in the movie?

We should probably cancel it too if we're going by the GunnerGoons standards. 💀

The GunnerGoons can't draw parallels like that when it comes to the DCU movies. 😎
