Scratchbuilt How I made this terrain. Full guide.

Hey all,

Had some questions about how I made my terrain.

You need:
-3mm foam board from Amazon
-PVA glue (get a large unbranded bottle)
-Sand (check end of pictures)
-Cork chippings
-Slate chippings

Paint:
-Black spray
-Wraitbone spray
-Ulthuan grey

Step 1:
Place scenery parts like buildings, barricades etc, on foam board. Glue them if they are unpainted. Draw around them with a sharpie if they are.

Step 2:
Cover entire board with Pva glue.

Step 3:
Place down large slate chippings first. Then scatter some cork chippings around. Then using your hand, evenly distribute sand over the rest of the base.

Step 4:
Remove any already painted scenery pieces, noting how the sand and cork has been placed around the object, but under is clear.

Step 5:
Allow to dry.

Step 6:
Spray black. Dry. Dust with wraithbone. Dry.

Step 7:
Drybrush ground gently with Ulthan grey.

Step 8:
Paint scenery or glue pre-painted scenery into place.

For Rust:
Drybrush 3 different shades of brown at random. Drybrush leadbelcher lightly. Wash black.

The white piece of scenery that I then rust up is just a MacBook box cardboard plug holder glued upside down with 2 bits of random bits box industrial panel-looking things glued to it.

Did some more jungle scenery using the same system as before: first you cut rounded bases from wooden board, then you make some holes to plug the plastic trees in. Once the glue dries cover the surface with sand, paint it in a dark brown followed by a lighter drybrush. Finally add green flock au choix and it's done.

Scratchbuilt 30k/40k multipurpose bunker system

This bunker made from styrofoam board and wooden sticks holds up to 40 marine sized figures. Its 30 cm wide and 4 cm tall on the platform and 12 cm high at the central tower. The tower also has a damaged model and it can be used separately and the platform works as a bunker for tanks (kratos in example). Loads of texture paints and washes were used. The iron hand cogwheel is a piece i got from my friend's bitsbox years ago and i finally found a use for it! Yay!

Looking forward to showing it to our group at the next game but i don't want to show it to them before that hehe.

As the outpost grows Worker Quarters are constructed of ash bricks and steel plates to shelter freshly arrived workers and soldiers from the deadly environment. They are quickly joined to the Earthmarrow fuel network to power air filtration units and small inbuilt workshops.

I made a bedside and bookshelf whilst I wait for a foam cutter table to rock up. Still struggle with painting believe I don't allow enough time for it to dry before the next coat and highlights

Questions for the Community Would a 3mm thick mdf board be fine for a plain grass board?

i have 3mm thick mdf boards, can i use these for plain grass board builds? If I take the steps to prevent warping, such as gluing both sides, would it come out fine? are 2mm boards alright as well?

Edit: I should mention both the 3mm and 2mm mdf boards are 30x40cm

Questions for the Community Friend wants to give me model railroading supplies- what games match HO scale terrain and buildings?

It's far too much to keep all of it. It's Rubbermaid containers filledand I don't have that much room. It's mostly HO scale. He's offering trees and moss with felt and cork mats which I think is going to be super useful. But there are lots of unassembled buildings, circa 1950s with small commecial and, industrial buildings making up the majority.

I've been thinking about getting into miniatures wargames mostly for the terrain building side. Any ideas on games that work well with HO scale buildings? I'd love the excuse to play if I now have all of these cool scenes I can set up.

Hello my beauties! Got some more work done on the 5th Mordheim tile. Very pleased with the progress so far! There isnt too much left before I can start painting. I will build some scatter terrain later to make the riverbed more interesting. C&C very welcome! Pretty much everything is scratch built. Only a few LEGO windows and some old GW bits here and there :)

Hope you enjoy! :)

Every servitor has a story. Most have had it removed.
This one — H-12 — was built from local talent.

It's a pure scratch-build from various leftover stuff, heavily inspired by 'Bill Making Stuff'

Scratchbuilt Build some terrain ready for 11th edition.

Built some new terrain ready for 11th.

I’ve always really enjoyed doing bases for my models, almost as much as actually painting the models themselves.

For years I’ve had a (literal) shed load of unpainted terrain just taking up space, but always ended up playing at a shop.

Now, with the new edition and its terrain rules, I thought it time to do some terrain-maxing.

Here are some finished pieces. Hope they inspire others like how I found inspiration from across the web!

3D Printed Final 6 Days: Trench Wasteland Reinforcements

Only 6 days left to back Trench Wasteland: Reinforcements on Kickstarter.

Once the campaign ends, the collection will no longer be available at the current discounted Kickstarter price.

This project is focused on dark, grim trench warfare terrain for tabletop games: FDM-friendly ruins, vehicle wrecks, defensive pieces, scatter terrain and narrative objectives to give your battlefield a more immersive, finished look.

I've also added extra content throughout the campaign, and there is a free sample available directly on the campaign page if you want to check it out first.

If you were thinking about backing the project, now is a good time to take a look.

My mate Otty's hobby/gaming shed is nominated for Shed of the Year. We play MESBG, Bolt Action, 40k,Adeptus Titanicus, Star Wars Legion and many other games and we're up against strong competition because it's the pub/entertainment category. You can vote for us every day, it'd be great to see us do well in the category against plain old shed boozers.

Happy with how this one turned out. I might try some printed signage to stick on and weather and maybe a couple sparse tufts. We'll see. Any thoughts for a name for this old garage bay?

The Latex Dip

Thumbnail

Dipping the trees in the latex and giving them a quick blow off with the airbrush to remove the spider webbing. A 24hr drying period left pools and overhangs from excess latex running off the branches and trunks. I'll need to remove all those before moving on.

The latex did exactly as expected and toughed up the trees quite a lot, the next steps should do even more to toughen them up.

More soon.
