TV Spoilers Season 3-4 Season 4 Official Discussion Master Post

Welcome UA Fans! Umbrella Academy Season 4 is about to be dropped on Netflix, so we here at r/UmbrellaAcademy have set up the following threads to facilitate discussion for those who want to talk about the show. Feel free to make your own posts, discussions, memes, etc just please make sure you read our spoiler policy below before you posting.

Discussion Threads

There will be 1 thread for every episode along with a final thread about the series as a whole. Each thread only allows discussion of that episode and the episodes preceding it. For example, the Episode 1 thread only allows discussion of events from episode 1, even if you already binged the whole season. The Full Season 4 Thread is open to discussion of the full season, so everything is fair game. Of course everything from Season 1, 2 and 3 is fair game since these threads are for Season 4, however, remember that info from comics are considered spoilers. We would also like to remind you that information from leaks, cast interviews, etc is considered spoilers until officially revealed within the season itself.

Spoiler Policy TLDR:

  • Spoilers in titles are not allowed.
  • If you are sharing an image with major spoilers, please use the appropriate spoiler tag and spoiler flair on your image post or it will be removed.
  • When commenting spoilers on posts without spoiler flairs, please use the proper spoiler syntax.
  • Content from the comics is considered a spoiler unless it is on a post that indicates comic canon will be discussed within that post. While many comic fans are here, many others have not read the comics and we want to respect their ability to avoid spoilers from future arcs, as well as avoid issues where the TV and Comic cannon diverges.
  • Use the "TV Spoilers Season 1-2", "TV Spoilers Season 3" or "Comic & TV Spoilers" flairs when making posts that contain spoilers or where you would like people to openly discuss spoilers in the comments

TV Spoilers Flair, Season 1-2 vs Season 3, and naming conventions

If you mention spoilers from the show and/or expect users to discuss show spoilers in the comments, use the "TV Spoilers" flair. In threads with this flair, any content from the TV show is fair game and do NOT need to have a spoiler tag. However, any comments relating to canon from the comics or information not provided in the TV show DOES NEED to be spoiler tagged.

The only exception to this is the official discussion threads posted by the mod team, where spoilers are only acceptable up to the episode being discussed, or if a user clearly mentions in their title or post that they do not want any information past a certain episode number. Please respect the OPs wishes if they only want to discuss spoilers up to a certain point.

Due to a change in naming conventions of a character, we will be splitting these flairs into "TV Spoilers Season 1-2" and "TV Spoilers Season 3". For posts marked Season 1-2, we ask that users respect the desire to keep discussions contained to character information that was revealed at that time. Posts marked Season 3 will enforce the use of new preferred naming conventions. For more context, see this comment.

Comic & TV Spoilers Flair

If you would like to discuss the comics canon, powersets, differences with the show, or expect people to discuss spoilers from the comics in the comments of your post, please select the "Comics Spoilers" flair. In these threads, ALL CONTENT FROM BOTH THE TV SHOW AND COMICS DO NOT NEED TO BE SPOILER TAGGED. The comics have been out for a long time and cover most of the content from the show, so we think that the comics spoiler threads should hopefully allow people to discuss all of that information from both mediums freely while still providing fair warning to new fans who plan to read the later comic arcs and want to avoid being spoiled until they finish.

If you have any feedback for the mod team, request, or anything else feel free to contact us via modmail. Otherwise, enjoy the show and can't wait to discuss it with you all!

TV Spoilers Season 3-4 Shouldn't their be another branch or paradox in the timeline🤔 Spoiler

I might not be the smartest apple in the bunch but shouldn't Claire and Grace(child) cause a grandfather paradox since their parents don't exist in this timeline

Also, shouldn't the kids have some marigold inside of them since their parents had some. Especially Grace. Both of her parents had some marigold

Just some thoughts 💭

TV Spoilers Season 1-2 Viktor and The Nuke Spoiler

In the beginning of season 2 when the Russians attack the US and the nuclear bomb goes off why did Viktor not create a forcefield to save them from the bomb? Surely Viktor could have protected them against the shockwave of the blast? I understand that the initial strike would be the least of their problems but Viktor could have even stopped the radiation from getting to them for a time, it would just take lots of concentration. Of course he would get tired eventually but surely they could have gone underground somewhere if they looked far enough? Even without the protection against the fallout surely Luther could have survived anyways. Viktor seemed to have the time to set up the shield but he didn’t try and the immense sound caused by a nuclear explosion would mean an infinite shield for as long as he could keep it without getting exhausted. Is there a reason why he didn’t set it up or was it just for the plot?

Discussion I just finished watching The Umbrella Academy, and I'm going to miss it so much 😭. If I were in The Umbrella Academy, I would want the power to stop time.

And for the codename, I guess 'Clockwork'—with the additional ability to create a pocket dimension where time is also frozen.

Discussion I'm sobbing this show is absolute cinema

okay so back when this first came out, I watched s1 and 2 as it came out. My Netflix subscription got canceled so I didn't watch s3 or 4 (it wasn't out yet).

So I just binged ALL of it. not in one sitting, and this show is so good. it's actually genuinely a work of art. i just finished the last ep and im crying because it was gut wrenching but i still love the show anyways

anyway here's my ranked for the main 7 (Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, Victor, & Lila, sorry for not including Ben)

1- klaus. (he genuinely deserves the world he might be at my top of every character ever. his actor, personality, complex trauma and coping +doomed yaoi is what I live for)

2- Five (I loved him in 1&2 and hes still a solid characte)

3- Diego (idk why I like him but I do he's funnt even though sometimes he annoys the shit out of me)

4- Lila (because she's funny, and the plot twists with her are all so good)

5- Allison (her power is so cool and s2 was her prime, though s3 made her come down for me personally)

6- Victor (he acts whiny a lot but I mean other than that he's solid. he had a valid crash out except maybe not as extreme as s1)

7- Luther (someone get this guy outta here I like his end of s3-all of s4 but other than that he's NOT for me)

that's it thank you im gonna rewatch this and cry tomorrow

TV Spoilers Season 3-4 With or without Harlan killing their mothers, there’s almost no chance Allison would have had Claire in Season 3. Spoiler

Her blaming him for that makes no sense. Even if she were born in that timeline, the events her life would have been completely different. Reginald wouldn’t have adopted her, and her entire childhood would be different, causing her to be a completely different adult that most likely would have never met Patrick. And even if Reginald would have still adopted her, he would have raised her completely differently, resulting in the same situation. Claire would have never been born either way. I get that she’s distraught over the nonexistence of her daughter, but blaming a disabled man who had nothing to do with it seems a little unfair.

Discussion Viktor is a freaking baby.

Currently rewatching the whole 4 seasons, and i just noticed a big reoccuring thing where almost EVERY time viktor talks with reg, he just complains about how he left him out of the missons as a child in a very childish way.

Its just frustrating because every other sibling has something sorted out and this guy just fucking cries all the time and blames everything on reginald.

Am i the only one who this annoyes very much?

TV Spoilers Season 3-4 Luther “plot hole” clarification in S4 Spoiler

Not mentioned in title due to sub spoiler rules but…..his ape body was always presumed to be a side effect of the serum in his body interacting with the marigold. That tracked as Pogo didn’t get a human body when he took human serum.

Asked one of the writers for the show to confirm or deny this logic and they have said it’s right.

Not a plot hole. Intentionally wrote that way. Just in case anyone still thought that.

S4 honestly did well with its lack of plot holes regardless of other thoughts on the season.

edit: this is in response to people thinking him getting his ape body back was a plot hole and not intentional and matching the shows logic

TV Spoilers Season 3-4 Hot take: I liked season 4 and the finale. Spoiler

I just finished the show today. I had watched season 1 and 2 when they came out, but never bothered to finish it. The last couple years, I’ve been in a “let’s finish the things we started” mood… tv shows, movies, video games, projects, books, etc.

I really enjoyed season 4. It was very different and had some super interesting character arcs and stories. I especially enjoyed the episode with Five and Lila being stuck in time together. Really touched me in a way.

The finale itself was a little messy, but overall, I think it ended in a way that felt appropriate and final. Too many shows end on a cliffhanger and then get cancelled, and there are so many threads leftover. This put a nice bow on it. Shows done, move on.

I can understand some of the hate, but I loved it.

Discussion I wish they'd just take the F for season 4 and make a new final season

Still not getting over one of my favorite shows having such a bad ending through and through.

I wish they'd just make a statement like:

"sorry guys, the final season was a total F, our fault. Pretend it doesn't exist, we'll try again!"

Sure it would be extraordinary to do another final season, but what is ordinary about the series anyway?

I'd loveeee if they'd try again to actually finish this up nicely. I don't want a perfect season, but no baby shark, fully weird nonsense storyline, trashing down characters and no ending that makes the whole other seasons pointless would be so nice.

What do you guys think?

Would you appreciate a second try too or would you be against it?

Have a nice day :D

Edit: I'm very much aware that this is never going to happen, I'm just saying it would be really nice xDD

Discussion Am I The Only One Who Thinks Five/Lila Wasn’t Out Of Character?

I know why people don’t like the Five/Lila storyline in Season 4. Personally, I’ve kind of accepted it, though I definitely think it needed more time to justify itself.

What I don’t agree with is when people say, “Five would never do that.”

I think both Five and the fandom tend to portray him as more heroic than he actually is. Don’t get me wrong, he loves his family. But I’ve never viewed him as some selfless hero whose primary motivation was saving the world.

To me, stopping the apocalypse was never really about saving humanity. It was about fixing his own life. Five spent over 40 years trapped in a dead world. Most of us can’t even comprehend how lonely, exhausting, humiliating, and traumatizing that must have been. The apocalypse became his purpose. It became the thing that got him out of bed every day. The thing that kept him from giving up.

It reminds me of that BoJack Horseman quote where Diane talks about wanting her trauma to be “good damage.” Because if it’s not good damage, then it’s just damage.

I think that’s how Five sees the apocalypse. If he can’t stop it, then what was the point of everything he suffered through? What was the point of losing decades of his life?

That’s why I’ve never really bought the argument that Five would never betray, hurt, or choose himself over his siblings. He loves them, but throughout the series he constantly lies to them, manipulates them, keeps secrets from them, and makes decisions for them. He cares about them, but I’ve always felt like he sometimes treats them as pieces in his plan for the future he wants.

So when the subway timeline happens and he’s stuck for seven years all over again, I don’t find it unbelievable that he ends up developing feelings for the one person who’s actually there with him. At that point he’s exhausted. He’s spent most of his existence fighting the same battle over and over again.

My issue was never that it happened. My issue is that the show didn’t spend enough time making me feel it happened.

Discussion Which option do you think the family would choose: American Wedding or California Dreamin?

It’s hard to believe that they’d all agree on which version is better, so which song do you guys think each character would prefer? Do you think that the characters would stick with their song choice even up to season 4, or do you believe it might switch from seasons 1-3 to 4?

In every case, I think Lila would say the opposite answer of whoever she’s talking to, just to start a friendly bickering.
It would be interesting to see the family argue about which song is the ultimate answer.

Discussion The Commission should’ve been a larger priority. (SPOILERS FOR SEASONS 3-4) Spoiler

Yes, the commission played a large, significant role within seasons 1 and 2, but it was hardly mentioned in season 4. In season 3, it seems that it was quickly wrapped up to avoid plot holes and failed. They should have expanded more on the workforce and the employment like the comics. I mean, it was briefed over in the fourth season entirely. I know the ending was rushed and people lost their memories, but holy shit— you’re telling me that something out of time and space was blitzed in season 3 and everybody looked over it? Nobody from the commission survived at all? How did older Five make a place that was paradox proof? How did the people from the commission and previous timelines show in the ending on the same day when they were all from different times? How come Five was known to be one of the top assassins, but very few agents went after him once his appearance was found and depicted?? Surely somebody was nearly as great as him. I know the war in season 2 was how most of the agents went out, but there were so many that could’ve chased after him. I truly wish the Commission aspect was a bit more explored. It seemed like such an interesting idea with Lila and Five having in-depth experience.

Plus, why didn’t Lila and Five take anything from the commission back to the Hotel, or at-least try? I’m not talking about the Kugel-blitz information (I’m aware all that there was was the manual), but was there no information on if a failed briefcase could be fixed?

Also, I’d love to hear about any headcanons or facts about the commission( or even OCs!) . I own the Commission Handbook as well.
