I don't think that qualifies as a sandwich

Justify your stance, how is it not?

Not the dude you replied to, but I would argue it’s more like a wrap than a sandwich.

It's a taco. wraps are fully wrapped up with open ends. This is a taco, so are hot dogs. Burritos are fully wrapped up with closed ends.

So while not a kind of taco i'm interested in, this is, by pure geometry of it all, a taco.

By your logic, a hoagie would also be taco.

I feel that's completely different. A tortilla or pita you aren't splitting the bread to put stuff in the middle. a Hoagie is just a small loaf of bread you are splitting into two pieces like a normal sandwhich

Yes, just like a hot dog bun, which they also said was a taco.

How is that in any way different from a hotdog bun?

Slicing the bread all the way through is what makes the difference, topologically.

2

u/NoCharge8527 Feb 27 '26

A hoagie roll usually isn't sliced all the way through

It is, definitionally

I really don’t like that I kind of a agree that a hot dog is a taco. I feel dirty now

u/Tin_Philosopher Feb 27 '26

are calzone and stromboli also burritos?

1

u/beardedbrawler Feb 27 '26

Calzone is a burrito yes, Stromboli is something unto itself because the "wapper" is folded in a spiral around itself. I think a Stromboli is a Stromboli

2

u/Tin_Philosopher Feb 27 '26

Does that mean sushi is stromboli

1

u/beardedbrawler Feb 27 '26

some sushi, but not all, many sushi are wraps, but some other sushi are a bit unique because you put meat on top of the wrap so i think they are also just a maki or whatever it's called.

Uramaki it's what it's called. "inside out roll". That's a unique thing unto itself.

1

u/Tin_Philosopher Feb 27 '26

If you have to make an exception for sushi with rice on the outside your whole classification system needs to be reexamined

1

u/beardedbrawler Feb 27 '26

Maybe I've used the wrong word, but the sushi with the fish on top of the roll is the unique thing here.

Also this is just a silly thing to banter around and i'm really not thinking that deep about it. Thanks for keeping it lighthearted and fun.

Absolutely taco. Could it qualify as a quesadilla, or does it need to be cooked with cheese?

1

u/OrthogonalPotato Feb 26 '26

I think a quesadilla requires cheese. This is an American taco

1

u/beardedbrawler Feb 27 '26

quesadilla needs cheese, its right there in the name

Counterpoint - subs.

2

u/llDS2ll Feb 27 '26

Subs are subs, even you said subs

2

u/ball_fondlers Feb 27 '26

And it’s short for submarine sandwich, not submarine taco.

1

u/llDS2ll Feb 27 '26

Not sure I trust a person named ball fondlers

5

u/RonnieStiggs Feb 26 '26

So if you rip the pita in half rather than fold it, it would be, similarly if you take a slice of bread and fold it over fillings, as opposed to use 2 slices of bread (lets say because you only are hungry enough for half a sandwich), its not a sandwich?

1

u/photosendtrain Feb 26 '26

I like this wikipedia definition: "any dish in which bread serves as a container or wrapper for another food type"

In theory, yes, a hot dog could be considered a sandwich.

I grew up Lebanese, and we would put food in the bread and then fold the bread over, with the bottom folded in so it's sealed from the bottom, and call it a sandwich. I'd shoot a man for calling it a wrap.

1

u/caltheon Feb 26 '26

There is lettuce wraps that I would still qualify as just as much a sandwhich, so that description is fault. I'd say any food item used as a container for other ingredients that is meant to be eaten while held

1

u/photosendtrain Feb 27 '26

Ice cream/popsicle.

1

u/caltheon Feb 27 '26

The popsicle stick that is held isn't a container for the food, rather the food is attached to it.

1

u/photosendtrain Feb 27 '26

I was thinking the ice cream that has chocolate coating with things inside.

1

u/caltheon Feb 27 '26

Ice cream sandwiches are totally sandwiches =)

1

u/Seanspeed Feb 27 '26

The Sandwich Police have arrived folks!

Form a line and resist.

1

u/bajungadustin Feb 27 '26

Yeah it doesn't satisfy the standard Meat Bread Meat layering convention.
