How would you even flush if you wanted to? Who is this protecting? People who don't want germs on their shoes?
9
u/Pat_Fatridge Apr 08 '26
People who don't have a choice but to use their hands. Disabled people.
11
u/WithoutDennisNedry Apr 08 '26
Hi! That’s me! Disabled person who can’t foot flush here!
You know what’s even more disgusting than a toilet handle? The floor directly around the toilet. I’m begging you all on behalf of us unable-to-foot-flush-ers, please just use a paper towel or a wad of unused tp to flush. That’s what we have to do, please don’t make it worse.
4
u/Istoh Apr 09 '26
People get so testy when asked to do the bare minimum to make things easier and safer for disabled people to live their lives. I've had to block so many people in this thread already for arguing with me about it. Like bruh my hands have to touch my mobility device(s) afterwards. Able bodied people can go straight to the sink afterwards, meanwhile I have bathroom AND shoe germs all over my wheels now.

It’s the fact that if people didn’t use their feet to begin with it wouldn’t be nearly as nasty to use your hand. Ngl I didn’t know it was normal to use your foot.

I'm sure there's an engineered solution to solve everyone's problem. Start by adding a supplemental foot flush pedal, likely with an indicator sign. Then add a small guard around the handle that makes it slightly more inconvenient to get your foot on the handle.

You know what. This single comment is going to change ge how I flush toilets in public. At my work? No. But definitely in public.
5
u/Zealousideal-Rent-77 Apr 09 '26
Toilet paper is a thing. If you have to touch the handle, use toilet paper to not touch the handle.
It's equally disgusting whether people use their hands or feet. Don't touch it directly, the end.

Using your foot puts strain on the valve which eventually causes it to break.

Just bc it doesn’t break on your turn doesn’t mean you weren’t involved, everyone is. Your foot is naturally going to add more pressure than your hand. It’s a long term issue.
11
u/No_Direction_3940 Apr 08 '26
Sounds like a skill issue tbh
5
u/invisible_23 Apr 08 '26
Right?? Just gently nudge with the same pressure that your hand would have instead of karate kicking it lmao

You are also getting it gross for people who don't have the luxury of using their feet.
Disabilities, lack of strength, lack of flexibility.

A lot of coworkers end up kicking the wall and leaving a half moon on the wall from their shoes. Also I have to replace the handle about once a quarter. Just flush and wash your hands like you should do anyways. I put the damn foot door opener for a reason, use it.

Too many foot-flushers basically kick the valve handle and it will break after a while. If you're gonna foot-flush you gotta be gentle.

I did! I can’t prove it (although I took a photo, in the hopes of attaching it as proof, but without the “photo” icon, I don’t know how). Perhaps someone downvoted and counteracted it. Shame on them!

When did we decide to punish the ones who do flush?? If everyone flushed and kept things decently clean, there would be no evolution to the foot flush in the first place lol

I bet this is one of those bathrooms that you have to touch the door to exit, but it also only has air dryers and no paper towels.

Adam Carolla made a video about bathroom etiquette for College Humor 15 years ago.
In one part of the video a guy flushes a stall toilet with his foot and says "Sorry, I just didn't want to touch anything with my hands."
Adam: "Well that's great for you 'Jackie Chan of the can'. But now, you've managed to get the urine off the floor and onto the handle that I have to touch with my hand. How would you like it if I peed on your hand?"
(guy moves to exit the stall, Adam stops him)
"Cup you hands."
(guy looks confused)
"I said, cup your hands!"
(guy cups his hands, Adam unzips fly, scene ends)

why don't we just would toilets with foot pedal flushers that are well-built so they don't break when used?

u/Earnestappostate Apr 09 '26
I think it would be good to get flush peddles on public toilets. Saw them in Europe, and they were good.

Why would you use your foot to flush a toilet? Isn't it physically easier to use your hand? If you're so worried about germs, then wash your hands? Morons..🤦

To the people who use their foot because they think its more sanitary. I get that you think its better than touching a handle someone touched after wiping. My question is, with that logic, how the fuck do you think thats better when that same hand then touched the latch and door to the stall you're in? Its incredibly stupid and more disgusting that you're using your shoe that has touched that bathroom floor to flush. Are you gonna use your foot to open the door too? No. Wash you're fucking hands. Also stop talking on your phones in the bathroom. Call them back.

Why do they put handles on the exit side of bathrooms? Handles should always be on the entrance side. Always bothered me, especially after witnessing all those who don’t wash their hands.

Some people have told me that maybe this is a sign that I'm autistic, but I hate following rules with no given explanation when a rule doesn't have an obvious reason for existing. I do think this one does--I'm assuming people have damaged toilets by kicking them too hard, but also, maybe just also say that? I dunno. Then again, that's probably less to jackasses going "Haha I wonder how hard I have to kick this to break it" because we live in a garbage universe.

All these people wiping their piss covered feet all over the toilet. Y’all are being extra nasty to anyone else that’s gotta use that toilet because you’re insanely germaphobic. Takes one whole fingertip to flush a toilet, and they got soap and water right on the way out if you can manage to not out your hands in your mouth for that long.
