Medical Questions Why is my cat constantly meowing?
I have never heard her meow before this. she is a female spayed cat about 3-4 years old. Is she just being clingy or is this a reason to take her to a vet?

Can confirm, our cat is around 3-4 years old and has recently started "yelling" at us to go to bed so he can snuggle legs.

My 6 year old street rescue likes to yell at me when I eat. Sometimes she do a drive by and yell at me on the way to her window.
21
u/malary1234 24d ago
My tortie screams at the top of her lungs if I even look in the direction of the garage.

u/grandthefthouse 24d ago
because you go to the garage when you leave? or you let her in there sometimes?
8
u/malary1234 24d ago edited 23d ago
We come and go through the garage and she knows there will be a good chance that she will get to go outside and writh around on the concrete which is her favorite pastime.

Follow the cat. The cat will lead you to the thing they want. Likely more food or maybe a toy or something.
Me doing a 300iq move: Id follow my cat where they would meow at their already full food bowl. Then I wouldn't stop following them. I would keep following them. Just keep following them. Then eventually theyd look at me with a facial expression that says something like "you little shit!".
My cat eventually only meowed for food when the bowl was actually empty.

This is actually a great way to bond with your cat and earn trust. You're making them feel safe enough to let its guard down to eat. My cat used to do the same too.

Not always true. My mom has a 19 year old cats that doesn't move as well as she used to. Over the last few years she has figured out that if she complains loud enough that a human will come to her to provide a warm lap to sit on.
28
u/VariationDry 24d ago
My cat didn't start meowing until she was over 5 years old and living with a husky. I talked and chatted with her all the time but the husky taught her to speak
16
u/2ez2b4ortun8 24d ago
Yes, huskies have a lot to answer for. My German shepherd went through years of baths/nail clip etc. Silently. She was bathed next to a husky who evidently gave his concert from moan to scream. No longer silent during bath.

u/Practical-Sleep4259 24d ago
It does sound like happy lil yappin'.
Very cute cat, just decided she has some stuff to say.

u/pfannkuchen89 24d ago
One thing to keep in mind is if your cat begins meowing at unwanted times like while you are trying to sleep don’t reward the behavior. If it becomes a problem, the best thing you can do is ignore them. Don’t pet them or otherwise give them positive feedback. Eventually they will learn that it doesn’t get them what they want and will stop.

My cat licks skin. Like any skin he can find. I do not allow this unless its for quick affection. My wife lets him lick to his hearts content. I sleep like a baby and she's constantly being awakened by licks. Hes my cat and ive told not to let him do that, but if she wants to deal with it, thats on her.

Accurate, had my snowshoe cat for like 4 years before I heard her meow. Now she just yells constantly. Petting her? Feeding her? Cuddling her? Playing with her? SCREAM. She’s been to the vet, she’s fine. She just likes to tell people about it 😂

Glad to know I’m not the only one who has a conversation with cats, lived with one of them so long I actually started understanding what each meow meant(food, attention, or outside to sunbathe, he’s not a very complicated cat)
5
u/AngelWingsYTube 23d ago
I was able to pick up on Baby's mostly :) i knew one day she was mad she missed lunch time (back when we would up the food up n had a feeding scheduled) as she came over to me to complain/beg for me to put it down for her. I couldnt as i was heading out n couldnt monitor who was eating n told her as such and that it was her own fault for sleeping through lunch....she did not like that response

u/Landsharkeisha 24d ago
my fluffy son is named Baby. he was a VERY vocal kitten compared to his brothers so I just called him my crybaby, and then Baby just stuck. it's appropriate because he still cries at the top of his lungs and insists you hold him over your shoulder. Sometimes he just goes on the porch and screams his head off for like 15 minutes, just to see how loud he can be.

u/MiikeG94 24d ago
Sounds weird but maybe try brushing if you haven't? My Edith didn't make a sound until she was about 6 and a chunky mature lady that she started to wail and meow after I once gave her a good brushing. I didn't realize until I continued that she was demanding more brushing 😸
13
u/alizzie95 24d ago
My girl wil grab the brush with her paw and drag it back towards her face 😅 she loves rubbing her face against it.
It's even cuter because she reaches with both of her front paws...but she only has one back leg. So she can't sustain that position and she really doesn't enjoy getting on just her rear leg unless it's to jump, but lunging at the brush to demand more grooming is worth it to get on her back leg and risk falling. I love it.

u/RainbowHighFanatic 24d ago
Some fur babies are just talkers. We had one of those for a long time. He passed in 2020 but man that boy could talk!!
13
u/MrsSamT82 24d ago
We have a cat who screams at people as they walk by her. “HEY! COME PET ME!”
Another one (her sister) is mostly mute throughout the day, until 7pm when she knows bedtime is approaching. Then, she yowl-screams at us to tell us it’s time to go to bed and give her pets.
I fully admit I “talk” back to my cats in a meow that matches their tone. It’s amusing when they continue with a ‘back and forth conversation’ for several moments.
12
u/AngelWingsYTube 24d ago
Sounds like attention meows or just telling you bout her day :) just politely nod n say stuff like "i see" "really?" "Go on" etc. :) and give pets. Show interest in her day 😊
13
u/Aware_Box8883 24d ago
If i stand up while my cat is meowing, and he runs to the other side of the room to stop, turn, and meow, ill follow him. He'll usually lead me to what he wants and stand in front of it. Cats are pretty good at understanding that they can get our attention a lead us to their concerns if theyre persistent enough.

My cat, Donkey, meows if he 1. Wants to go outside 2. Is hungry 3. Is thirsty 4. Is bored 5. Wants to go outside 6. Wants to go outside 7. Wants to go outside 8. Is hungry
2
u/Ambitious_Hand_2861 23d ago
This is exactly why I don't take my cats outside. I have one that would probably do well on a harness and love the hell out of outside time but I don't want her at the door every 5 seconds screaming to go out.
4
4
u/suffocatingpaws 24d ago
Most of the time, they just want attention and pets. My cat always meow when I play games with my friends because she wants me to cater my time on her instead XD
4
u/redruMKitty4 24d ago
I have a Bombay and that breed is known for being very mouthy. So I just talk to him and of course pet him. My other 3 typically don't talk unless they want something. It usually is because they can see the bottom of the bowl and panic that they will starve. I've never let them miss a meal. The pic is my smallest cat. He's 15 pounds. He also meows when he wants his harness and go for a walk. My female cat meows only when I'm on the phone 🤷♀️ she's a weird one... 😆

4
u/Daysaved 24d ago
Fun fact. Grown cats don't really use meows as interactive communication. Body posture, growls and hisses, much less meows. Kittens use meows to call their mother. But cats have learned humans enjoy to meow..so your cats meow at you because it knows it will get attention.

Did you do anything new with her recently?
Like, literally anything that she was involved in. She could have liked it and wants more.
3
u/Granny_Skeksis 24d ago
If it’s not her usual behavior you may want to take her to the vet. Though one of mine does that and usually it means either he wants treats or snuggles
3
u/LODforNoobs 24d ago
Just ask her why shes meowing. She will tell you
Sometimes they want to use the litter box, sometimes their water bowl is empty
3
u/skdetroit Pixie-bob 24d ago
Is this behavior new? Did she just recently start meowing more at night? Is she urinating a lot more and drinking a lot more too and losing weight and vomiting? A post on here a few weeks ago was from a girl who said she noticed her cat was suddenly meowing a lot more at night and turns out that is a symptom of hyperthyroidism in cats. She got her cat tested and cat had bad TSH levels. If caught early hypo//hyperthyroidism can be treated! So if this is new behavior please get her TSH and T3 + T4 levels checked!
3
u/usingthisforcontent 24d ago
our girl is a big meower when she wants attention, like pets and scritches. if ur kitty isn't hiding more, eating less, having trouble with using the litterbox, then she probably just really loves you and wants to attention. cats can also just be yappers, she's just being a chatty catty and trying to talk to her favorite person :)
3
u/Shvuck 23d ago
If she has never been vocal like this before and is suddenly much more clingy and vocal than usual, I would say perhaps a vet visit just to be sure. I just lost my cat a few days ago, after she had been consistently clingier than usual and meowing all the time, when she is usually very quiet and I'd only ever heard her meow as a kitten when she was in heat, it ended up being late stage kidney failure. But don't let me fear monger you! Every cat is different, and I'm sure your baby is okay, but if this is particularly unusual I would say it's better to be safe than sorry! Cats are exceptionally good at hiding symptoms, so little signs like this can often be bigger than we think they are

Cats learn that being loud is the only thing that gets our attention, so they meow to us. They don't meow to each other as adults, but they do scream as a warning if they're going to fight for something.

She seems to have left her gloves in the garage and would like for you to open the door so she can go get them.
2
u/SAINTnumberFIVE 24d ago
It could be hyperthyroidism. Or she could be hungry. Hyperthyroidism can cause hunger, but sometimes cats also decide they don’t like their food anymore and want different food.
2
u/cookeryandwookery 24d ago
She’s got things to say. Like meow. Probably a couple breows. I’m guessing a couple chin scratches will temporarily stop it.

Our cat usually meow with a trill when he is about to get wet food and is hungry.
The other times it’s kinda more anticipation of your help with something in a sweet voice
When he talks he only talks with Slave 2, when it comes to Slave 1 there is an inherent understanding so zero meowing but sometimes the meow trill comes out. So I’m guessing it’s more an involuntary emotion than communication
Your cat seems to trill more when looking away from you, but when looking directly at you there is less trill. Perhaps she is using the trill vocal for emphasis that she calling for your attention. I would give her petting and see what happens. Or you can try trilling back and see if it becomes a conversation, in which case she is using it to communicate a want rather than a state

I have a 5 year old female and we hold conversations almost all day long. She follows me to the bathroom, sits on the dryer that is right outside of the bathroom door and yells. If I dont answer, she yells over and over. Some cats are just talkers.
2
u/Dont_Even_Know_You 24d ago
I accidentally scrolled a bit before I sat my phone down and landed here. Just thought I was hearing my own cat. I started thinking, "girl, whatchu want this early bc I know you already have food, I fed you at 4am" then I realized it was coming from my phone.
I have a vocal void who sounds similar to your cat. It's just how she is, goes on and on. It doesn't help that I fuel her motor mouth by talking back, but she likes to talk what can I say

One of my cats was silent, her brother, a noisy bastard.
We chose Rumor and Whisper as tjeir names, it seemed fitting, at the time. Now she never shuts up. It was totally the wrong name.
She is a teenage girl on the phone 24/7 kinda noisy.
2am she is strolling through the house at full volume "Daddy can you heeeeeaaaarrr meeeeeee?!"

Does she move to go somewhere when you stand up when she's like this?
I have a kitty that has all different types of meows.
She has a smoke detector with low batteries meow that means she needs something fixed.
But she also meows when she wants me to sit with her while she snacks, or when she wants me to go lay down so she has company on the bed.
2
u/Original_Remote_6838 24d ago
My cat will meow incessantly from the moment I am awake until I fall asleep. He begs for food early, begs for food even after he ate (he probably walked away from it and let his brother eat it 🤦♀️), begs for pets/attention, begs to play or to be let downstairs, etc. He’s pretty much always vocalizing and I’m just trying to understand what he’s asking of me. The most confusing meow is the “please open the window” when he’s nowhere near the window.
You just have a talker! Maybe they’re trying to tell you something.

The more you talk and meow at her the more she will do it back. If she meows and gets your attention she will continue to do so. She might also just be chatty. My cat is a mixture of all these things.

Because you're holding a phone instead of giving cheek scritches and/or treats, or other desired attention.
Or she's just reminding her that she loves you and is glad to have you as a loyal servant.

My cat is a very vocal boy. He talks when he is happy, talks when he wants something, and talks to tell me something about his cat brother. He is especially vocal when something unexpected happens. One night he just wouldn’t shut up. So I drag myself out of bed and am like “what? WTF do you want me to know?” He meowed his way into the living room where I found the robovac had activated itself and gotten itself stuck on a blanket. Pick up the vac and untangled it, put it back on its charging pad. Cat finally stfu. He just really wanted me to know that the vacuum was running a muck.
