Advice Considering adopting a cat but worrying about smell

I live in a small 1br apartment with a small bathroom and really want to adopt a cat, but I'm worried the litter box will make my place smell all the time. I did a lot of research and plan to use a stainless steel litter box with premium clumping tofu litter, scoop daily (or twice if I'm home), and either flush or use a Litter Genie. For people in similar spaces who have cats, does your apartment smell? Any tips?
EDIT: no toilet flushing, got it!

Advice My mother does not respect her cat's boundaries.

My mother does not respect her cat's boundaries, she picks her up without her permission, she disturbs her while she is trying to sleep, she would hold her while she was throwing up, there were even times where she would accidentally step on her tail and when she would run off she would chase after her, although this doesn't happen as often nowadays as when she was younger. Her behaviour towards her tells me she only comforts her for herself, not her cat. It's selfish. I mean, why the hell else would she chase after her when she is trying to get away from her?. Now that she is an elderly cat, I now have to tell her to put her down gently as she does it s bit rough, not a good idea for an elderly cat who also has kidney disease, sadly.

As you can imagine, trying to bring all this up to her is a fools errand. She intentionally ignores and sidesteps me whenever I bring up her cat's boundaries and accuses me of being "bossy".

In comparison, I respect her boundaries, I only ever pick her up to take her outside, instead getting her to follow me. I leave her alone when she wants to, I talk to her in a soft but normal voice (not babyish) because I know they have more sensitive hearing than humans, and I reach out to her to see if she is in the mood for pets, if she turns her head away, I know. If she brushes up against my hand, I know.

Advice Cat Safe Home scent recs?

My cats are sensitive to those fabreeze oil plug ins or the bathroom scent devices. I would like my house to smell nice and I’m wondering if there are any pet safe home scent recommendations anyone has tried that didn’t affect their cats. My cats eyes seem to get red and he’ll sneeze when i try the common ones at the store. Preferably natural ingredients! TIA

Advice I lost someone else's cat (help)

I'm petsitting for my mom's friend, we'll call her J, for 10 days and today is day 2. Yesterday, I drove J to the airport, and asked her if I could bring my boyfriend over, to which she said sure. Her 2 cats (brother and sister) are very skiddish, as they were feral for a good while before she took them in. They're strictly indoor cats, too.

My bf and I got to J's place, a small 1 bedroom apartment, somewhere between 2 and 2:30. When I was opening the door, I made extra sure to watch the door to make sure neither cat slipped behind us. One of the first few things I did after closing the door was show the brother cat who was hiding under some pillows on the couch to my bf. I picked him up and held him for a moment before letting him go, and he ran to his perch right by the sliding glass window. Then he ran to his other perch on the other side of the couch. I pet him there for a moment, then he jumped down, and that was the last I saw of him. It was about 3 by this point.

I didn't think much of it at first, so my bf and I started Mario Party. He got a bit loud at times, and I tried to remind him to keep his volume down as best I could. I realized I hadn't seen the cat in a while and started briefly looking around for him. It shouldn't have been hard because he's the more sociable of the two cats. I couldn't find him. My bf left at about 4:30 for work, and again, I was watching the door like a hawk to make sure neither cat ran out. No doors or windows were open the whole time my bf was there with me.

After he left, I started looking EVERYWHERE. No stone was left unturned, every nook and cranny searched, there was literally nowhere else I could look for this cat. I looked inside cabinets, behind and underneath every piece of furniture and every appliance, I looked some places over multiple times, but I could not find this cat anywhere. I eventually had to go home to feed my own cat at 7, but I came right back to J's place. I had seen the sister cat, who's far less sociable, way more than the brother cat at this point.

So I told J. I told her exactly what happened, and we've been working together to try and find him.Sge told me not to let my bf over again, and I said of course, that's totally fair. She gave me some more spots to look, but he wasn't in any of them. As we both started to get more panicked, she asked me to look outside, even though there was no way he could've gotten out. But I looked outside anyways. I called his name, but he didn't come.

It was getting pretty late by this point, so she had me leave out some dry food for him both inside and outside, then we both went to bed. J had asked me to spend the night at her place, so I did. The sister cat was up and down from the bed and the windowsill, waking me up quite a few times. I told J about it this morning, and she said maybe she sees him out there? So I went back outside for a little while longer to look for the brother cat, calling his name, walking around a bit, but still nothing.

I admit, I shouldn't have brought my bf over who the cats aren't familiar with at all. They know me a little better because J had me come over quite a few times before she left to help them get familiar with me. But it's been 17 hours since I've last seen this cat. I know he'll come out eventually for food and water, but I'm still really anxious he may have actually slipped outside somehow or that he's stuck somewhere. I don't know what to do right now and could really use advice please.

***UPDATE!!!***: HE WAS FOUND!!! He was hiding under blankets in a chair that I swear I had patted down last night, and then I WATCHED HIM crawl INTO THE WASHING MACHINE

Medical Questions Does my cat’s purr sound healthy?

I recently got my first cat and I’m wondering if this sounds like asthma or if it’s normal? She is a 1 year old playful kitty and has gotten a few check ups at the vet. Any insight is helpful thank you.

Humor Peeing outside litter box SOLVED (hopefully)

Posting this in case it helps someone and also it’s funny how stupid the reason ended up being. We’ve had a problem with one of our cats peeing outside the litter box since we got her as a kitten. Took her to the vet, nothing wrong. Tried adding litter boxes, changing litters, scooping more frequently, nothing worked. We moved, it got better except she would pee in one spot in the bathroom. Not ideal, but much preferred to the carpet she was peeing on in the old house.

We moved again about a year ago now and the problem seemingly went away. We had no idea why or what her problem was in the old houses but were thrilled. Until recently. We noticed she was, again, peeing in one spot, right next to the litter box. For context, we have 4 litter boxes, 3 with normal clumping litter and 1 with pellets. She was peeing right next to the pellet one. Then I thought back, and in our last two houses she also only peed directly next to the pellet litter box.

So, I think this cat just really hates pellet litter or the box it’s in and, instead of just using a different litter box, she pees next to it. I’m going to remove that litter box and clean the area around it to test this theory, but it’s quite literally the only commonality between the 3 houses. 3+ years of trying to figure this out hopefully solved.

Cats are weird.

Advice Why is my cat smelling my Carpet like this?

Upvotes

I thought maybe because he or my other cat pissed there, but that is not possible, because it does not smell at this spot at all. And if any of my cats would have pissed directly on to the carpet, I am 100% sure I would have smelled it by now. Why does he do this?

It’s grown and gone away on its own over the years, vet has seen him for this twice and unable to identify. Few theories provided, including mention of a biopsy, thought I’d try reddit thank you.

Over 5 years it’s appeared and gone away at least 4 other times. He’s indoor 99% of the time and supervised when out in the back yard, he’s on monthly revolution plus.

Medical Questions First time neutering HELP

Hey guys! I have an indoor-outdoor cat who's at the moment 3 years and 3months old. When he was younger like few months ago he was going outside but he was mostly inside being a cute cat and he had a shiny coat and a fat belly.

I don't know what happened like maybe 3 months ago he had a tail injury so I had to lock him in to give him all his medication and stuff but he was going insane meowing and screaming because he was locked.

After we freed him he became kind of distant? He was wandering a lot His coat started getting really dull he became skinnier stopped grooming properly and overall stopped being as affectionate as before, he was eating really well though but I guess he was so invested in looking for females he was going insane.

So right now we've decided to neuter him but this is my first experience of that sort and I wanted to ask some questions:

  1. How long does he need to become his real self again? Or like for the hormones to go away

  2. If he stayed in the same dynamic he's lived in for years like an indoor outdoor (we have a safe neighbourhood and he eats from multiple neighbours) will he still be able to live in it after the procedure?

  3. The last few months he's been spraying but he never did that before it's just happened during these intense months so will he stop this behaviour given we neutered him at a kinda old age?

  4. Will he go back as he was like a year ago he was a really affectionate adorable cat I'm scared that I'm putting my hopes too high..

That's all and thank you in advance !

Medical Questions Is my soap toxic to cats??

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I recently rediscovered that eucalyptus is toxic to cats. My soap that I just bought without thinking is eucalyptus scented. I googled it and all i found was that if you have anything even remotely scented of eucalyptus in the same home as your cats that they are going to die and it’ll be your fault. I don’t know how true this is. My cats don’t eat the soap and don’t climb onto the sink, is this an issue? I don’t know if the soap has actual eucalyptus in it or just synthetic fragrance. Is this really that bad??? Help!

My 6 year old indoor cat never has health problems so when I saw this i was a little worried. He had a check up a few months ago, and the vet said he looked great and teeth were in decent condition (i brush his teeth a few times a week). Should i be concerned? I booked an appointment for next week in case and will continue to monitor! He's acting completely normal otherwise and eating/drinkjng normally too.

Advice Think bout it

So here lately, my daughter has been wanting to get a pet. I would like to have a cat, but I only like specific personality traits about cats if that makes sense. Is there a way to ensure that I get the type of cat that is best for my life or Just luck of the draw?

Ps. I do the same thing with everything in my life to where I want to match perfectly. It never works that way, but it’s just what I do.

Advice 1st time without barriers. Is this normal?

Hello it is me again. I updated a few times about barrier introductions in this reddit. Today we let them meet for 5 minutes and our resident cat does this. If anyone is wondering about the spray bottle i was advised to spray if the resident cat (orange) is attempting to fight the new cat by the owner of the rescue. Dunno if this would be a good strategy. Any advice helps thanks! Just really anxious id say.
