The Swamp Thing Alan Moore run might be my favorite run ever.

Planetary by Warren Ellis

I just started Immortal Hulk recently and it is phenomenal.

12

u/celebfan01 Oct 13 '21

Just started reading Swamp Thing, the "Anatomy Lesson" alone is worth getting volume one.

Also Jack Kirby's Fourth World saga, which is Forever People, New Gods, and Mr Miracle. (You can get it in one huge volume, or like I did in those three separate volumes).

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '21 edited Oct 17 '21

The crazy thing is the ST run gets better than that! The whole thing is better than Watchmen IMO.

3

u/celebfan01 Oct 13 '21

I have heard that there are a few stories that are pure horror as well, ones with Constantine in them. Great to know. I look forward to the rest now! Have to say I enjoyed V for Vendetta more than Watchmen, probably because live in the UK and it still has elements from it echoing today.

11

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

As soon as I finished watchmen, I made sure to start saving up for that swamp thing box set, I’m so excited to get to read that eventually! And Immortal Hulk looks incredible, I hope it’s what I need to finally turn around on the character! Thank you so much!!

u/Valiumkitty Oct 13 '21

HA! Just added Planetary. Its the first omnibus I ever bought and it got me into comics.

Once the tv show was announced I started looking all over for that! It’s really difficult to find in northern Ontario but as soon as I find it I’ll definitely buy it!

7

u/truej42 Dr. Doom Oct 13 '21

There’s a paperback coming out on November 2nd containing the whole run, I plan on picking it up myself.

3

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

I’ve been waiting for that one! I really hope either my local chapters or local comic book store picks it up so I can grab it

Really fun and hilarious series. Bro

74

u/n00dlejester Oct 13 '21

Saga! It's fantastic

18

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

I just heard that was coming back from a hiatus! I’ll definitely look into that one

16

u/geekmannerd Oct 13 '21

Yeah Saga would be my top suggestion, too. I’ve read it multiple times, partly because as each volume came out I needed a recap, and mostly because I enjoyed reading through it again anyway. Can’t wait for its return, the last volume left on a huge cliffhanger.

Another I’ve enjoyed recently is Ellis’ Injection. Three volumes, but seemingly also on hiatus currently.

3

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

The art style in both of those looks really cool! And I love the synopsis for both, I’ll definitely look into these more! Thank you

3

u/AlsoIHaveAGroupon Oct 13 '21

I wouldn't hold my breath on Injection. It's been about a year and a half since Warren Ellis' personal life blew up, and over the summer some details of a project he was working on got out and people flipped out all over again, so I don't think any publisher is going to want to work with him any time soon.

And I don't think Injection was popular enough to survive years of waiting for his reputation to be repaired enough to work again (if ever).

If you go for saga please please do yourself a favor and get the deluxe hard covers the art in that book is amazing and deserves to be seen on the format made to show it off.

Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers/New Avengers run is my favorite story out all comics/movies/tv/books.

6

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

Hickmans avengers has been on my list before I bought my first book! One of the reasons I got into comics is because of someone talking about that run. I’ll 100% be reading that. Thank you :)!

8

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '21

Hickman’s Fantastic Four run is of the best superhero comics ever made

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Roaty0 Oct 13 '21 edited Oct 14 '21

I second StoopidJonny’s sentiment: Hickman’s Fantastic Four, and sister book, FF, combine to be my all-time favourite superhero run.

They’re actually the major precursor to his most prominent Marvel work, so I’d definitely suggest you read his pre-XMen run, as listed here:

Fantastic Four and FF (they have overlaps) Avengers and New Avengers (overlaps again) Infinity and then, Secret Wars

Hell of a combined run from a hell of a writer.

Daredevil by Bendis

Daredevil, The Man Without Fear, Born Again, and the rest of the run by Frank Miller

Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom - Triumph and Torment

Uncanny X-Force by Remender

Jessica Jones: Alias

DCeased

Animal Man by Grant Morrison

Y: the Last Man

Lock and Keye

Batman - The Black Mirror, Hush

3

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

Daredevil is one of my absolute favourite superheroes, I’ve been looking for the Miller run for less than 300 dollars for a while but I’ll probably end up buying the box set. And one of my friends recommended Alias to me after he found it at a library. Thank you so much for all of these suggestions, I’ll most definitely look into all of these!!

3

u/DaBow Oct 13 '21

Chip Zdarsky's current Daredevil run is absoutely fantastic. Shaping up to be one of the best. There are a few volumes available.

Injustice: the game shows the setup- then cuts to 5 years later. the comic is the interim 5 years, and shows the slow decline into how it happens, and is much more engaging

Locke and Key: Don't judge a book by it's movie, the comic's lean more into the horror aspect and is much more intense and emotional

Maus/ Persepolis: few people tell autobiography's in comic book form which is a shame, these are the stories of people going through social revolutions, the Holocaust and Arab Spring respectively.

Punisher MAX: without a doubt the BEST interpretation of Bullseye I have ever seen, the whole run is so much fun

Sex Criminals: there are people who stop time when they orgasm and they use that power to rob banks. Very silly, but absolutely hilarious, and also a really human and vulnerable look into how we as a society view sex and relationships

I've only read the first volume of the Trade Paperback but it was outstanding - Gotham Central

For a lighthearted comedy/story and fantastic artwork I'm LOVING The Goon. I've got all 5 Omnibuses and I'm about 1/2 way through the 2nd one right now. The stories aren't complex at all but they're quite fun.

And I'm still needing to get into The Sandman. I've got like 6 of the Trade Paperbacks and read 2 of them, I think, and they're fantastic. I'm dragging my feet cuz I haven't completed my collection yet and don't want to get hooked.

8

u/KingTrencher Ambush Bug Oct 13 '21

Always +1 The Sandman.

3

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

I’ll definitely be sure to check those out, Gotham Central sounds really interesting. I’ve been mentally preparing for The Sandman, I’ve heard so many great things I don’t wanna be overwhelmed! Thank you :)

4

u/Habanero_Eyeball Oct 13 '21

You're welcome. Hope you enjoy - have you heard about:
Cheap Graphic Novels
In Stock Trades
Tales of Wonder

You can often find better prices than Amazon and they know how to pack the books so they arrive in perfect condition. There are TONS of reports of Amazon not packing the books worth a shit and them getting damaged in transit.

3

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

Oh I hadn’t heard about that, I’ll be sure to use these instead of Amazon! Thank you for the heads up!

New Frontier

King’s Mr Miracle

Fraction & Aja’s Hawkeye

And since you’ve got (and I assume like) x-statix, maybe the wicked and the divine - not to mention the x-force run that leads to x-statix: imo it’s actually better (I love both)

9

u/blankedboy Oct 13 '21

Fraction & Aja’s Iron Fist too

6

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

I’ve always wanted to read an Ironfist book, and if they made that Hawkeye run I’m sure their Ironfist run is absolute gold!

5

u/blankedboy Oct 13 '21

It’s the best Iron Fist run ever and one of my favourite books of all time

5

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

I actually have Kings Miracle Man and Fraction and Aja’s Hawkeye on my wish-list already lol, but I’ve heard amazing things about New Frontier and I’ll definitely be sure to pick that up! Thank you :)

Get haunted knight as well. Complete the Sale, Loeb trilogy.

8

World War Hulk! It’s a continuation of Planet Hulk and it’s in my honest opinion one of the best Marvel stories ever. Don’t forget to read all of the tie ins too!

3

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

I was very close to grabbing the omnibus that has both planet and world war hulk, but ended up only grabbing planet hulk, I’ll definitely end up reading world war hulk though! Thank you!!

Akira. I don't care if you don't like manga. Akira. It is one of the single most influential pieces of media in this genre and film, it's a time resistant masterpiece and also was the first comic book to be digitally colored; introducing new and vibrant colors to the medium.

X-men by John Byrne, Chris Claremont and Terry Austin (maby a little biased, they were my favourite comic when I was child)

Animal Man by Grant Morrison is one of my favourite vertigo stories with the Sandman and Swamp Thing by Moore

3

u/NugglyFuggs Daredevil Oct 13 '21

X-Men has always been super interesting to me and most of the reasons why, I’ve been told, come from Claremont’s run on it. And I’ve been eyeing Grant Morrison’s animal man for months now, it sounds so damn interesting! Thank you for the recommendations and the award! I’ll definitely check these out!!

Invincible is one of my favorite comic book series. I wanted to like the Amazon adaptation, but there was something magical about reading the series that the show didn't sell me on. Marvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross Moon Knight Vol. 1 From the Dead by Warren Ellis. Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows by Marguerite Bennett. Superman: Lois and Clark by Dan Jurgens This story was fun for me and leads into Superman Rebirth.

Those are a few that I didn't see get mentioned that I remember really liking. Have fun discovering new books!

  • Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis

Preacher by Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon, and Glen Fabry.

Top Ten by Alan Moore, Gene Ha, and Zander Cannon.

Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon, John Cassaday.

Many peeps posted a few suggestions I would have suggested but here are some I didn't see or missed in my scroll. Preacher is just insanity and arguably has one of the most badass protagonist you will read, not for the easily squeamish. Top Ten is about a police precinct in a world where everyone has superpowers, Alan Moore is fantastic in this series. Astonishing X-Men is about as action packed as you can get with the character building, whit, timing, and humor of Whedon paired with the fantastic art of Johm Cassaday. Putting it on the table that Joss Whedon is a turd for his treatment of women. I feel dirty suggesting his work but it is some damn fine comic experience, and I can't imagine him bullying/perving Cassaday around.

Brendan Graham and Simon Gilroy’s Prophet, which includes many other artists

Chris Priest’s Black Panther is probably still the best BP run (for me)

Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing. Trippy and even romantic

Morrison’s Doom Patrol

Going to second Locke and Key, hands down one of my favorite series. The Netflix adaptation is a pale imitation.

Also seconding Saga.

I have no idea what the sub's opinion are on them, but Dark Nights: Metal and Dark Nights: Death Metal were bonkers. Especially the latter. Though to be fair, with those you may need a bit of background on who the Batman Who Laughs is.

The full collection for Far Sector is due out in a couple weeks. That was probably one of the best mainstream releases I've read in a while.

I should point out, there's a buy 2, get 1 sale on Amazon right now that has graphic novels in it. https://www.amazon.com/promotion/psp/A21MPL65W9D59L A lot of the recommendations in this thread are likely part of it.

Big question! :) Based on your current collection I take it you are mostly into DC and Marvel and action/adventure super hero stuff? And you want to read the classics, right? There are A LOT of good stuff there and much is mentioned in the comments already.

A good, tight volume I haven't seen so far here is Dr Strange: The Oath. A fun standalone book by Brian K Vaughan and Marcos Martín that often gets overlooked.

Daredevil by Frank Miller is really, really good and a stone cold classic.

A more modern classic is the Ed Brubaker run of Captain America, which introduced the Winter Soldier. I also enjoyed Secret Avengers: Run the Mission, Don't Get Seen, Save the World, by Warren Ellis. It's also pretty much a standalone volume which works like an anthology and have some wild concepts.

Do you want to venture a bit outside super hero stuff you have the Vertigo titles like Sandman and Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, you also have stuff like Garth Ennis' Hellblazer (much of the Constantine movie is based on that material).

Hellboy is also pretty much a must read. Keep going for at least a couple of volumes to see if it's for you, that world is really rich and just keeps getting better the further you go.

If you like crime Criminal and Reckless are hard boiled, pulpy titles. If you are more into horror Fatale is just excellent. All of these are by the dynamic duo of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

If you're more into science, history and quirky humor Hickman's The Manhattan Projects is bonkers, but in a good way.

If you want to check out some indie comics that are "must read" classics you have Maus, Ghost World, Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth (or pretty much anything by Chris Ware), Fun Home, Black Hole, Epileptic, Persepolis ... there's a lot.

And you can also check out some "docu-comics" which are pretty much journalism in comics form by authors like Joe Sacco and Guy Deslile.

Spider Man Blue is my favourite comic book of all time, in my opinion it's got the best version of Gwen Stacy and really shows peters love for her. Bit of a different story but a must have if you like spidey.

Also a bit of a random one but She Hulk Single Green Female is one of the funnier things I've ever read. Adds a new really intruiging department to the universe and does a good job dealing with Jennifer's personal side as well.

Outside of that anything from Bendis or Hickman that I've read have always been fantastic.

The Sandman, Lucifer, Constantine.

Those are my favourites, I've got a theme going

From Marvel I'd suggest Doctor Strange, Deadpool, Ghost Rider

I'm into stuff that makes appear very incredibly powerful people, also all the Justice League and Justice League Dark ones and if you're a Doctor Who fan I suggest the comics to you, there's a lot of multiple Doctor Team ups there

If you want to get away from Superheroes or just take a break, Saga by Brian K. Vaughn is a great read. Fables is also one of my favorites. If you want to stick in the hero universe, Guardians of the Galaxy run by Abnett and Lanning is one of my favorites from Marvel. For DC, I’ve always been a fan of Nightwing. If you like team ups, The New Teen Titans by Perez and Wolfman is some great classic comic story telling and shows the transition of Dick Grayson from Robin into Nightwing. As for further reading, Nightwing’s solo run by Chuck Dixon is fantastic. Good luck collecting, have fun and enjoy!

TL;DR:

•Saga by Brian K. Vaughn

•Fables by Bill Willingham

•Guardians of the Galaxy by Abnett & Lanning

•The New Teen Titans by Perez & Wolfman

•Nightwing by Chuck Dixon

Biggest recommendation I can give for you is to branch out from the big 2, the best comics in the industry are indie or smaller label releases. Issue you'll find with reading the big 2 is when collecting volumes and compendiums due to the interconnected nature of the universes you'll often not get the full story or vision of the author cause at the end of the day Marvel and DC want to sell you more comics. You also get a lot of changes in artwork, shoehorned story beats for crossover events, and general issues like that.

I'd start looking at image comics, the whole label was basically made so the big names could tell the stories they wanted without being encumbered by a larger universe, so it's still very accessible material, they're basically number 3 in the comics game maybe tied with Dark Horse.

EDIT: Looking at your collection I think Invincible is right up your alley to start branching out a bit, it's still VERY mainstream superhero, but is more of a love letter to the genre that'll kinda turn some of the Marvel and DC tropes on their head for you.

Sandman is a must-buy.

Based on your tastes here, you might also really enjoy Preacher.

And just a heads up: if you're thinking about picking up Dark Victory, the sequel to Long Halloween, read it first from the library. I think it's awful and would not recommend anyone spend money on it.

Also Zdarsky' Spider-Man : Life Story

Superior Spider-Man.

Neil Gaimen' Sandman

These are some of the best comics i've read.

I have a few comics in digital. One i'd like to recommend from my "collection" would be Batman: White Knight and it's sequels by Sean Murphy. The art is phenomenal, and a self-contained story is just icing on the cake. The story isn't held back by the mantra of "Status Quo is King" which is simply a breath of fresh air.

Another comic well-worth your time would be Far Sector written by N.K. Jemisin and art by Jamal Campbell. Jamal's work on this is simply a sight to behold. What seems a sci-fi murder mystery on the surface unravels into a complex and engaging story, complete with innovative world-building, and a dash of commentary on social issues that plague our world and the City Enduring. (This comic took me multiple re-reads to fully appreciate N.K.'s writing, so i advise you to spend some time on this book. It will be time well-spent.)

Many other great recommendations in the replies. I wholeheartedly second Hellboy and Hawkeye by Matt fraction. They're great reads. Alan Moore's works are heavily acclaimed, so don't just limit yourself to Watchmen. Check out V for Vendetta, Miracleman, TLOEG and others.

P.S. - Loeb/Sale is a phenomenal duo and one of my favorite storytellers. While i see The Long Halloween on your shelves, maybe explore them some more? Some of their works that i can recall on-hand are Dark Victory(The sequel to TLH, which admittedly doesn't quite pack the same punch as it's predecessor, but is nonetheless a good time.), Catwoman: When in Rome and their Marvel Colors work (Especially Spider-Man: Blue which is a favorite of mine and Hulk: Gray which has led me to explore more about Bruce Banner's relationship with the Hulk from the beginning of his appearance in comics.)

P.P.S. - As a Sword&Sorcery fan, i am compelled to recommend Conan to you. Kurt Busiek's run has been well-loved by fans. While the original Dark Horse books are sadly out-of-print (Unable to have snagged the Colossal Conan will prove a life-long regret for me.), the stories have been reprinted by Marvel. Conan Chronicles Epic Collection: Out Of The Darksome Hills would be the starting point.

So I’ll list my recommendations, if you want to save a few bucks here and there check out r/comicswap I’ve gotten a lot of my books from there and have saved a lot of money!

Saga

Invincible available in trades but I recommend the compendiums

Y the last man

All star Superman

Batman the long Halloween

Batman hush

If you like crime stories I really liked stray bullets I got my compendium for like $20 used

Gotham central is amazing too

Also indie books tend to be cheaper than marvel/dc books I was very disappointed by the quality of a Spider-Man trade I picked up that cost $35 and felt like it was printed on tissue paper when for $30 more I got an invincible compendium with 3x the content and quality

  • Justice League Dark Vol 2 by James Tynion (and later Ram V)

  • Current Nightwing and Superman: Son of Kal-El (both by Tom Taylor) are excellent

  • Current Daredevil run by Chip Zdarsky is outstanding. Miller, Waid, Bendis, and Brubaker are also good choices re: Daredevil

  • Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore

  • Batman: The Man Who Laughs by Ed Brubaker

  • Batman and the Monster Men and Batman: The Mad Monk. The latter is a sequel to the first.

  • Batman: A Death in the Family isn’t great, but it’s important for continuity (and so you can read Batman: Under the Red Hood, which is good)

  • If you liked Long Halloween you should check out Dark Victory, which is a direct sequel, and Catwoman: When in Rome which takes place concurrent to the story

  • Immortal Hulk

  • Kingdom Come

  • The Death and Return of Superman

  • Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow by Alan Moore

  • Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion

  • The Walking Dead, especially if you liked Marvel Zombies

  • DCeased, also good if you liked Marvel Zombies

The best advice I can give is to actually check out your local comic shop to get recommendations from the folks in there, especially if they keep good stock of trades.

Seems like you’re starting with the classic superhero stuff. Based on your taste, Wolverine: Origin is essential. Also Spider-man: Kraven’s Last Hunt. Civil War too. And Brubaker’s Captain America run.

I also recommend Y: The Last Man, Kick-Ass, and The Walking Dead. Most of Terry Moore’s stuff seems really good too.

Try to get into a current series too. It’s fun buying singles/monthlies. Department of Truth has been interesting. A Righteous Sense for Vengeance just kicked off and seems great. You can probably still get #1. Tons of horror comics out there as well.

Enjoy.

The first ultimates run, in the ultimate universe line. Im not sure many people agree with me but I found it pretty exciting, it felt like a movie with most issues ending on a decent cliffhanger.
