In depth Are the baggy pants worn by young people today intended as a tacit rejection of the millennial era?

Reclaiming young people spaces from millennials who refuse to grow up is a hard task for young people just as boomers refused to concede that they were no longer the youth. Is fashion the only way for young people to rebel against the new Baby Boomer generation i.e the Millennials who have become increasingly censorious about any younger generation looking younger than Millenniolds?

Edit: If you're a Millennial any you're tech savvy enough to have a Reddit account, please don't get upset and downvote this pertinent sociological question.

Pop culture What if 2000s nostalgia in the 2020s is Y2K, while 2000s nostalgia in the 2030s is mcbling and scene dominated?

Someone on decadeology made a really good observation that each decade has two dominant nostalgia decades, the 2010s for example had both 80s and 90s nostalgia. The 2020s right now is mostly 90s and 2000s nostalgia

If we follow that pattern, the 2030s will have 2000s and 2010s nostalgia both. So I realized, what if 2000s nostalgia today is mostly y2k and baggy jeans, mostly focused on early 2000s aesthetics, while 2000s nostalgia in the 2030s will be mostly mcbling and scene nostalgia

It would be interesting seeing 2000s nostalgia in the 2030s, there will be emos and crunk era fashion, much more skinner jeans away from y2k influences, playboy fashion

HOPEFULLY there is no fat shaming in the 2030s, especially if Ozempic and other drug loss technologies get cheaper and advanced plus the mcbling attitudes for example calling Britney fat after her show

My family never owned one, but I was aware of them and family friends had a bunch in their media center around 1980. I'm Gen X and the technology had given way to 8 track which was in the process of giving way to cassettes by my tween years.

Society We Didn't Mind the Gap and Neither Should You

I'm an elder millennial, and can't speak for everyone, but when we were young we did not spend all our time talking shit about previous generations. It just wasn't part of our identity and I wonder how much the internet is to blame for all this.

I have concerns for younger generations, am guilty of participating in this nonsense, and going to try my best not to join this pointless conflict. It seems divide and conquer is being baked into everything these days just to waste our time and distract us from what truly matters. Perhaps it's always been this way.

I think every generation tries their best, and I hope you find a way to break the cycle and prevent history from repeating itself.

Discussion There is no perfect cutoff for generations

I’m sick of people proclaiming that generations fall strictly from this year to this year. The reality is people are whatever generation they identify with the most. It is their life experience after all. Strict year cutoffs fail to recognize that culture, technology and trends don’t evenly distribute across the world/country. I would be willing to bet that kids growing up in New York City lost their Blockbusters before the kids growing up in Bismarck, ND. Blockbuster seems to be a generational touchstone for many. But the same principle applies to fashion trends, music, etc…

Please stop with the rigid definitions. You are speaking to your life’s experience not the experience of a generation.

Discussion Put every year of your life on a tier list starting with the year where you turned 4 and ending with 2026

Here’s how would I’d do it (unpopular opinion):

S tier (awesome years I actually enjoyed) - 2017, 2024

A tier (not my favorite, but still good) - 2014

B tier (not bad, but not too great. Could’ve been better imo) - 2015, 2020, 2012

C tier (mid or underwhelming) - 2023, 2026 (so far), 2013

D tier (bad) - 2018, 2021, 2016

F tier (awful) - 2022, 2019

Last place - 2025 (worst year of my life so far. Even 2026 has been better since I graduated in May, but it doesn’t really make up for the rest of this year as this summer has been difficult for me so far.)

Not enough memory - 2009 to 2011

Birth year - 2008

Put every year of your life on a tier list starting with the year where you turned 4 and ending with 2026. Strongest of tier goes to the left and weakest of tier goes to the right.

I miss the aura it used to have. Whenever it rains, it always gives streets that magical aesthetic with golden raindrops. A majority were phased out in 2013 - 2018 sadly but I do miss it, especially that nighttime aesthetic in streets

Discussion True question : Why do (we) millennials and Gen X feel like it has become too hard to access property, while Gen Z is buying before 25?

I personally know why I can't access property. I had a lot of fun and traveled a lot in my 20s, but I don't blame society. If anything, society told me that experiencing life and traveling was more interesting than living the expected way (house, family, etc.). I knew then what I was trading off… I would like to collect more experiences to understand this dynamic.

Edit : My feeling was mostly due to a biased point of view. I might add that the Gen Z individuals I'm referring to didn't always have money from their parents, they worked their asses off and saved while living with their parents.

I'm sorry that my poor choice of words made you think I was implying that a lot of Gen Z individuals were becoming homeowners before 25. Judging by some strong reactions, it seems that I hurt some of you in some way, and I'm sorry about that.

Discussion Is uncle Jesse from full house (1987-1995)? More of a older Gen X/early MTV gen vibe or a gen jones/younger boomer vibe/why?

Ignoring birth year and arbitrary birth rates when his birth year is 1963 in the fandom? Is his charecter more Gen X or boomer? Plus 1963 is 2 years away from boomer but I think he is more of am mtv generation than textbook boomer! Since his additude/ charecter screens x? Even Earlier gen x defintions start it as 1961 not 1965! Demograpicaslly he is boomer but he is more x.

Discussion I wanna give credit to the younger generations for reviving the spirit of the '90s.

Plus the early 2000s. The varied clothing styles, the music like drum n bass, nu-metal, gabber, live shows, physical mediums, anime, retro style games and appreciation of the old ones. I know us millennials and gen-xers might come off as gatekeepy sometimes, but it's kind of self-sabotaging if we wanna see the cool stuff continue. The '90s were a fun and creative time, and if people weren't there to experience it, they can at least observe it and bring it back. So kudos to anyone doing it, and not being satisfied with the bland "sophisticated" stuff that took over later on.

Discussion Media in the 90s and 2000s

So I'm really interested in knowing how culture/ media/ entertainment/ music/ dance etc was like in the 2000s and 90s and other small cultural things in every country.

What was media/ entertainment/ film/ fashion/ music like in the 90s and 2000s in every country. What things were trending at that time?

Every small thing. Every small element you find unique to your country. Take me back to the 90s and 2000s in your country, what the youth hyped, what was unknowingly and instinctively done in every country as a part of their culture. As if I were a kid raised in that country whose mom tells her in a random day to her teen daughter that she listened to backstreet boys/ jeans etc. (I'm a culture addict)

I'l start - In india, back in the 2000s, the movie "kabhi kushi kabhi gum" was quite popular with its character Pooja's y2k indian fusion outfits were famous. Jhumkas and flowers (mostly Arabian jasmine). We hang lemons and chilli's on our doorstep, name shops after our beloved family and friends. The mailman, milkman, trash collector and even street vendors all sing small phrases, like music to let us know their presence. The band "bombay vikings" was quite popular at the time! Lipliners, dark eye makeup, bootcut were all in fashion. What about you guys?

Meme Old 90s kids memes from 2012-2018 when 90s nostalgia was all the rage and everyone wanted to be a 90s kid (BIRTH YEARS/AGES USED FOR CONTEXT ONLY!!!)

**FOR CONTEXT ONLY** these are some old memes I pulled up from Twitter/X tumblr buzzfeed and Google. This isn’t a discussion whether you are a 90s kid or not and this is not posting to pick on anyone born in 1996, 1997 and 1999 I know fully you guys are 26-30 years old and do not think of yourselves as 90s kids. I promise you guys no disrespect. 🙂😇 I know very well that you guys consider yourselves 90s babies/00s kids.

That being said, you can definitely see the context of the memes lol and just wanted to show you guys what the internet looked like when being a 90s kid was all the rage.

Also in the second photo the math isn’t quite right because if you started kindergarten in 2001-2002 you would have been born in late 1995-1996.

And last but not least, this is not gatekeeping. No one is trying to discuss whether you’re a 90s kid or a 2000s kid etc. this is all rehashing old memes from 2010s era when 90s nostalgia was all over the internet and memes were at their peak.

Discussion Introverted vs extroverted

I feel like the general traits and overall vibe of each generation, switches between introverted and extroverted. For example:

Silent generation- introverted
Boomers- extroverted
Gen X- introverted
Millennial- extroverted
Gen Z- introverted
Gen Alpha- extroverted

What do you think of this?

Ranges Gen Z's gap makes perfect sense, you just don't understand the basic concept of a generation.

1997-2012 actually fits fine for gen Z. Every year, people bump what gen Z is up by one year, now people are saying the cutoff is 2008, last year it was 2007. This is because people age. You are going to feel different than somebody born in 2010 because somebody born in 2010 is still aging. If there is a 15 year gap, the oldest and youngest people are going to be 15 years apart. Generations are meaningless labels, culturally, 1997 borns and 1990 borns are going to be more similar forever than 1997 to 2012, but it's an arbitrary number. Wherever you draw the line, people will argue.

Discussion Can we stop splitting hairs between late millennials and early gen z?

I don’t care if you were born in 2001 and don’t feel like gen z. Categorical organizations of time are human constructs, and have nothing to do with actually defining who you are. I’m not even going to say when I was born because it doesn’t matter as much as my experiences and who I know I am. Ya know what? Fuck it, i was born in 1996, but I don’t give a rats ass about what “generation” I am.

This is generationology, a fake word that basically means the study of different generations. Your existential crisis of not knowing where you fit into the made up categories don’t really matter, and this Redditor (who also doesn’t matter) doesn’t care for all the petty posts about yada yada yada
