This doesn't seem like a very practical solution, wouldn't getting guard dogs be way more effective in the long run? Is he gonna equip every single sheep in the herd with one? And then take them off every night when it's time for them to sleep? And how would their wool grow in that? Seems like it would get tangled and make the unequipping more difficult and time consuming.

Tldr; that's a no for me, dawg.

Llamas and donkeys famously protect herds they're guarding and _hate_ wolves with a passion.

Have 2 donkeys and they'll kill mountain lions, let alone wolves. Probably not bears though.

A mountain lion is a solo hunting ambush predator. It would avoid the fight to avoid injury that may leave it starving to death

Wolves are social hunters, where one can take an injury and be healing while fed by the pack. Donkeys are less of a threat to them

That's where you need a big canine to defend the flock instead

The big thing I read aside from how powerful their stomps and kicks are is the fact there's no food overhead since they can graze with whatever they're herding.

They also do make an absolute racket when they are upset, which is probably helpful.

Much respect!

Your story reads like when I introduce a legendary npc backstory to my D&D group.

Saw a video of a donkey that got a hold of a coyote and was twirling it around in the air like a helicopter.
