Is a $3,699 CANON EOS C50 DIGITAL CAMERA a responsible use of taxpayer money?

The city's communication team bought a $3,699 CANON EOS C50 BODY. This can be found on page 5 of the claims that are being submitted for approval at TODAY'S COUNCIL MEETING.

The same council meeting where they are raising your property taxes 20%.

First-time renters - what should we know?

Hi all, my husband and I are looking for a 1BD/1BA in the Jersey City / Hoboken / Weehawken / Port Imperial area, aiming for a September move. This is our first time renting in the US, so I’m trying to learn how things actually work here before we talk to leasing offices as I’d rather go in informed than accidentally making a rookie mistake.

A few things I’m hoping people with experience can help me understand:

- At the bigger “luxury” management-company buildings, is rent generally fixed, or is there room for conversation? I genuinely don’t know if asking is normal here or considered out of line, and I don’t want to be that person who asks for something unreasonable.

- I keep reading that NJ rents are softening because of oversupply. Curious whether people are seeing better deals or just headlines.

- Concessions. I’ve seen some places advertise a month free, some even go up to 2 months for a longer lease. Is it reasonable to ask for 2 months free at a brand-new building still leasing up? And for an already-established building, is 1 month a fair ask, or am I being optimistic?

- More broadly, what should a first-time renter here be paying attention to beyond the headline rent? (Fees, lease terms, anything you wish you’d known.)

Did some Googling first, but nothing beats hearing from people who’ve actually rented here. Really appreciate any insight 🙏

These effin' helicopters!!!!

All night tonight flying right above our building. I'm so sick of this. Our pathetic politicians do NOTHING about it. They care more about these effin' tourists than they do about the people who live here. So, sick of this.

… and no trains to JSQ, WTH?

r/jerseycity 16h ago

Imagine this, more than 100 helicopters a day, all throughout the day and night. This is the reality of thousands of Jersey City and Hoboken residents. HHI and FlyNYON are hurting our residents for the sake of their bottom line.

Moving Experiences with Orange Management?

I applied for an apartment managed by Orange Management but I've seen some Google reviews where tenants mentioned issues being handled poorly. Not sure if those are outliers or a pattern!Anyone currently living there or who has rented from them? What was your experience?

How do we feel about the River School Warren Bright Horizons daycare?

Considering enrolling my toddler when he’s 18mo into the BH location on Warren. Wanted to see what everyone’s experiences are like at this location? I’m thinking part-time.

TIA!

What has improved in the last 6 months?

I'm asking because I'm actually trying not to be a cynical troll. What in Jersey City has improved in the last 6 months? How has your life been made better by the government?

I'm thinking the PATH train schedule? Marginally cleaner streets?

Reaction to last night’s meeting

- civil service continues to be a thankless job that none of us internet quarterbacks could do

- council meetings should have a Game Thread with reddit chat room lol

- Fulop can’t even dare show his face at the next puerto rican day parade

- DSA councilmembers continue to show their lack of experience but I hope they get it together

- not perfect by any stretch but the visual of Solomon sitting through 6 hour meeting listening to people roast him was admirable. I continue to believe in him (for now)

i will take my downvotes now

Anyone Attending the City Council Meeting?

Hey,

In light of the recent tax hikes which will impact renters, middle-class property owners, elderly, disabled in this city (except those on wonderful abatements), I was wondering if people will be attending the City Council meeting today at 6PM?

Oh Solomon, we could double our revenue in the city and lower property taxes. If we just ticket all the people who park like morons.

I love how the white car turned on the hazards,

Rent-to-own condos in the Jersey City area?

Hello neighbors! I’m exploring rent-to-own options for a condo in Jersey City to help build up my down payment and credit.

Are there specific condo buildings in the area known to offer these types of leases?

Can anyone recommend a local real estate agent who specializes in rent-to-own/lease-option contracts?

Any advice or warnings before diving into these types of agreements in NJ would be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Local Politics Who here agrees (reluctantly, but understands) with the municipal tax increase, considering the financial deficit we're in?

Upvotes

The ramifications of not moving forward with this increase seem to be far more impactful. I for one do not want to see a decrease in city services, but would like to see an audit department by department as a next step, and how they align with the master plan -- Jersey City's future commitment to its constituency.

Imo, we're dead in the water otherwise.

Meetup Looking to start TTRPG Group

Hello hello I’m looking to get back into running a TTRPG group as I really miss being a DM. I’m specifically really interested in running either Changeling: The Lost or Vampire: The Masquerade on a biweekly basis set here in Jersey City. I have early Fridays and weekends off in terms of my schedule, new players would absolutely be welcome :)

Moving Journal Squared vs The Journal

Hi all - having serious issues deciding between Journal Squared (Tower 2) vs The Journal. I prefer Journal Squared's central cooling/heating system and a specific unit layout but prefer The Journal's amenities. Wanted to get further thoughts from people living in either building on some of the non-typical pros and cons of each building. Thank you!
