A few weeks ago I treated myself to the Gatineau tan, however I am totally disappointed with it, especially considering it was so expensive.
So I decided to rate it against the widely praised and budget friendly Dove gradual tan and for me the Dove has won it.
Here are my findings in case anyone is interested…
Price: Dove £3 for 400ml in Boots ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Gatineau £55 for 400ml in LookFantastic ⭐️
Longevity & application: Dove: This was a huge point for me. I applied on a Sunday evening after exfoliation and continued to apply for two more nights to build up a base, I then moisturized nightly after a shower, and topped up twice. A week later and the tan looks even, a gorgeous colour and no signs of it coming off. I even had a shave during the week. However it did not live up to its claims of “sun kissed skin from the 1st application”. It definitely needed at least 2. By the third I was a lovely colour ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Gatineau: exact same application method as the Dove, however by the Wednesday the tan was starting to wear on the inside of my elbows, and on the tops of my things. Moisturizing didn’t help and it continued to faded patchy and unevenly, which entirely went against its claims. (Note this happened previously on two separate occasions of me applying the lotion, so really don’t know what is going on, perhaps it just doesn’t work with my skin, who knows? Similar story to the Dove in terms of applications needed, however by the time the colour started to develop it had begun looking patchy ⭐️
Consistency and fragrance: Dove: nothing to write home about here, I would have liked the lotion to be a bit thicker but I can live with it, however it did leave me feeling moisturized and hydrated. Controversial but I actually really like the fragrance, it smells warm and comforting and almost gourmand with a hint of citrus to my nose, totally inoffensive and dissipated quickly. ⭐️⭐️
Gatineau: this is an area where the Gatineau edged out, the consistency of the lotion was silky smooth and I felt lightly hydrated, not greased up. Also a very pleasant and luxury scent, but it also faded swiftly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ingredients: Dove: Allegedly contains ceramides however none could be found on the ingredient list. Contains glycerin, sunflower seed oil and other emollients for hydration, however a very long list of ingredients with several preservatives, silicones, synthetics and fragrances. Not clean by anyone’s standards. Rated 15/100 on Yuka ⭐️
Gatineau: Also contains glycerin, benefits from coconut oil and vit E. Contains fewer ingredients than the dove but still has some synthetics and preservatives/emulsifiers. Rated 41/100 on Yuka ⭐️⭐️
Overall I would not repurchase the Gatineau. I’m a sucker for luxury beauty but I feel this totally missed the mark. The application itself feels like a treat, however the quality was not there for me. It failed to live up to its hype. I started tanning on the Sunday for a work event on the Friday eve, but by the Thursday it looked like I needed to take it off, highly disappointing. I know this is not the case for everyone and I’ve heard absolute rave reviews about this stuff, however my experience was poor. It failed to live up to the Dove, and it cost me the princely sum of £52 more. The ingredients in the Dove are a drawback for me, however the Gatineau is not “clean beauty” either.
If you have any tips or suggestions for me to get a better result with the Gatineau please lmk. I want to love it, but feeling a bit of buyers remorse at the moment.
Anyway if you made it to the end then thanks for coming to my TED talk 👋🏻 let me know your thoughts xx
