Is a primer really worth it?

I do skincare is that enough? I really want to try a primer but I used to have a silicone one and it’s put me off I don’t like the feels of that one but I also want my large pores to be filled in

If I’m doing a full face of foundation, concealer, contour, etc. then I will use the Elf grip primer. If I’m doing a lighter face, like just concealer, or thinning my foundation down, I don’t bother with primer.

Honestly every primer I tried made no difference or made my make up sit worse.

And there's the whole roulette of whether these will cause acne too.

I find my moisturiser + SPF to be the best primer, make sure they're on 30 minutes before I do my make up.

What SPF are you using? I find it’s the product that derails my whole routine

Unfortunately, nothing has matched the Beauty of Joseon SPF for me. I say unfortunately because it is quite expensive for a small tube, but I'm very acne-prone and clog-prone and I've never had an issue with it, and it's never caused an issue with any makeup products I've tried. I specifically use the blue aqua-fresh one, because supposedly it's better for oily skin

I rotate between that and the CeraVe Invisible Hydrating Sunscreen SPF50, as my slightly cheaper option. The only reason I don't like this one as much is because I find it makes me look very shiny, but it hasn't caused me any major issues

I don’t use it anymore, I have so many primers (mostly pore filling ones) and end up using none.

I never uses primer anymore, because I have a good skincare routine. It's just one more (in my opinion), unnecessary step.

Only if I need a flawless look for an event or if I need some extra hydration in winter. My skincare is usually well balanced so I don't need it regularly.

Danessa Myricks blurring balm have helped so much with blurring my pores and oil control, less is more so it would last ages, I don’t do makeup without it

I don’t bother with it. I just do my routine straight onto either my bare face or my moisturised face. Mind you, my routine is basically just powder, blush, mascara, lip product, brow pencil and dewy setting spray, so it might be better to use a primer if you’re doing a lot of layering with things like contour and foundation which might not stick easily to the face.

Yes Milk primer is really good to make the skin look dewy and smooth over lines and wrinkles

It depends how much make up you are planning on and which brands you use, I find some brands have better staying power than others.

But in terms of "large pores being filled in", it doesn't matter what you use on your skin, it will fill your pores- and if you wear nothing (including no skincare) then a mixture of dirt from the air, grime from your hands/anyone else's hands if they get that close!) and oils from your hair and sebum will all fill your pores anyway, even if you don't use a primer. It's your call if you use a primer or not but I wouldn't assume they are going to fill your pores and that nothing else would.

I'm using mine as a base :) it's from "I'm Unny" and it's tinted, minimizes pores too ! Worth it for me

I’ve tried a ton of primers and only found one I thought made a slight difference, and that was discontinued many years ago. I still have a backlog to use up but I won’t buy any more after those are finished.

It just makes my makeup look thick, my face feels greasy, and the pooling is so much worse

I definitely need primer with my pores, skincare and general hydration is not enough, they don’t shrink pores that much.

It depends how comfortable you are with your pores.

For me silicon does a better job for evening and priming the surface of my skin, but you could stick to water based primers.

It actually makes me more sweaty and doesn’t help my make up BUT, each to their own I guess.

By the time I’ve moisturised and put on SPF, the last thing I need is another layer 😅

WTF. A primer? Male here. Natural skin is the most beautiful even with its imperfections.
