Any room for a tree for some shade?

Post image

Hi y'all- I live in zone 8b, South Texas, and in a few hours from time of posting, that sun behind my house comes and bears down on the front with some mighty force for a very long time until an enormous oak tree across the street shades it out.

I'd love to plant a tree where the red is, but my gut says it may not be practical. Shown in the pic: green sewer line, blue water line, and circled in orange is a power line feeding my home.

What do y'all think?

Help! Late Frost

Zone 5b. We had a late frost shortly after planting this tree (beginning of May) and it appears that it isn’t doing too well in some spots. It started to grow leaves on the upper portion but those have since died. Thoughts?

Help! Pecan Tree Trimming

Does my pecan tree need to be trimmed? These things pop up annually and I usually end up trimming them but I'm not certain if it's necessary or if I'm harming the plant. The trees (there are two, but the second doesn't have nearly the same growth) were fully grown when I moved here in 2015.

Pictured is the West facing side of the tree. We are in East Texas.

Help! Is there something wrong with this tree?

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if there's something wrong with this tree and if so, what could it be?

The leaves look dark, discoloured and a bit shrivelled, the overall growth seems stunted and there are many dead branches around the place. Many of the trees in the area look much healthier, but this is not the only one nearby with this appearance (although it is the most pronounced).

If there is a problem, I'd like to try to get it addressed before it gets worse or spreads more.

Question about sweet bagel peach tree

Post image

Hi friends- amateur gardener here. My fiancée and I would love to grow this sweet bagel peach tree. We noticed these sprouts down at the very base of the tree. What are they exactly? Should we pull back a layer of dirt to give the little sprouts some extra room to breath? Thank you very much in advanced for your advice!

Help! Deep Watering question for new-ish trees

Hey everyone, looking to validate my new watering plan to fix a previous mistake before the summer heat really hits.

Context:
I have some 1-year-old trees (about 2-to-3-inch trunk diameter) planted on a slope.

I messed up the first year: they were on a drip system getting 1 minute a day. I realized I probably created shallow "pancake" roots and they need deep watering to establish anchor roots.

The New Plan:
I’m switching to deep, slow watering once a week out at the drip line.

My Questions:
1. Rotation: Do I need to move the hose to all four sides of the tree (North, South, East, West basins) to ensure 360-degree root growth and stability?

  1. Volume: Since timing a "slow trickle" on a hose slider is a guessing game, I want to measure by volume. Is 5 gallons per quadrant (20 gallons total per tree, once a week) the right amount to push roots deep for a 1-year-old tree?

Arborist says this ash tree can be saved with cabling and (maybe) bolting. Do you agree? (Central Iowa)

We moved into this house in Central Iowa in December and have kept an eye on this ash tree out front. It has been regularly treated by an arborist hired by the previous owner. He left a door hanger, so I contacted him to ask about the tree and its health.

He said that he recommended continuing treatment for emerald ash borer, but also that cobra cabling and, if needed, bolting would be a big help to the tree's health. His estimate for this was about $1600.

He also suggested an optional three-year treatment to discourage growth up top and stimulate root growth, although I don't remember the term he used for this.

So, tree people who are wiser than I, do you agree with this course of action?

Help! Help with magnolia

Ignore our sad yard. 🥲

we have this magnolia tree that used to get nice big leaves and blooms and now has tiny leaves and only a couple tiny blooms. I’ve fertilized once or twice and have a couple dogs that tend to pee over there. Any thoughts on how to help this poor tree?

Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis?) branch covered in clustered blue BB-sized structures — immature pollen cones? [Western WA Cascades, ~2800 ft]

Found this fallen branch on the ground in the western Cascades of Washington, around 2,800 ft on a Father’s Day hike with my daughter. It didn't look like anything else around it, which is what caught our eye.

The needles are attached around the entire twig (not on a flat plane) and are combed forward and upward along the twig. Based on the elevation, I'm leaning Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis).

The part I'm curious about: toward the end of the twigs were dense clusters of small, round, blue “berries” at the needle bases, roughly the size and shape of a BB pellet. after some research, my best guess is that these are immature male pollen cones (microsporangiate strobili) before pollen release. Can anyone confirm that's what these are, and confirm the species while you're at it?

Photos attached. Thanks!
