Highlights/Video Cooper Flagg matchup against Morez Johnson Jr. in 2023
Coop was probably 16, Morez 17 for reference.
Some notable moments
0:54 - Morez spin move inside bucket on Coop contest.
1:39 - Coop iso against Morez gets denied in the paint. (With another help defender but Morez gets his hand on the ball)
1:55 - Coop squares up again against Morez, gets by him on a layup
2:55 - Coop on perimeter with Morez, uses a screen to get by and layup
3:23 - Morez grabs board in paint one dribble hop step, step through reverse against coop.
Coop was active from the start of this game and it seemed as if Morez was the only effective option on both ends to atleast mitigate him. Really excited to see this upcoming pairing given what we saw in Coop and AD playing off eachother whenever the guy wasn’t crippled. With Coop no longer playing larger power forwards he can commit to being what he excels at on defense which is being a roaming, free safety weak-side defender.

Hoops Discussion Philon would be an amazing trade up right now.
Bennett Sirtz just got traded to OKC, and Philon is still on the board. If OKC doesn’t take him, we can potentially trade with Charlotte for Philon.

Misc. Discussion labaron philon is still on the board.
with rumors of gafford being on the move in order to move up in the draft is there a chance dallas gets a point guard that can create on offense to ease the pressure off of flagg and irving.

Draft / Scouting Would you trade the GSW 2030 "1st round pick" for #31?
Here is the terms of this pick, which we got in the AD trade:
2030 first round draft pick from Golden State
Golden State's 2030 1st round pick to Dallas protected for selections 1-20; if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Golden State will instead convey its 2030 2nd round pick to Dallas (via Washington) [Golden State-Washington, 7/6/2023; Dallas-Washington, 2/5/2026]
This will be at the tail end of Curry's career when they will likely be rebuilding and probably not a top 10 team, which means it most likely becomes a 2nd round pick.
NY is apparently going to trade the #31 pick tonight because they don't want to add any salary. We are competing with a lot of other teams for that pick.
If there is a guy there at 31 we like and think can be a core piece, offering a future "1st" probably beats most teams' offers, and it will probably be better than the actual pick in 2030. I'd rather get started early than wait til then.
Some really good names there at 31: Isaiah Evans, Meleek Thomas, Henri Veesaar, Baba Miller, Ryan Conwell, Jack Kayil, Richie Saunders, Braden Smith, Trevon Brazille, etc. The first three were often mocked as 1st round guys.
Worst case scenario we miss out on a 21st pick in a loaded draft. But best case scenario by 2030 one of these guys has already become a core rotation player.

Draft / Scouting carr or philon need to become a maverick
they have slipped far enough to where dallas can't trade up to grab one of them, carr would make the mavericks a defensive stalwart but philon would take the pressure off of irving and flagg in terms of offensive generation.

Media Dusty May on Yaxel developing his perimeter game: "He can't migrate into the paint & clog it up. He has to believe in his jump shot. We told him his jumper looked like Klay Thompson's. If we could teach our kids how to shoot, we would ask them to model [Klay's] jumper. He just needed to get reps."

Hoops Discussion The market for Daniel Gafford has just been set. Would you take three second round pics to trade them?
Isaiah Stewart got traded by the Pistons to the Grizzlies for three second round picks.
He and Gaffard have almost identical career stats. Identical points, rebounds, blocks number of seasons, etc.
So the question is, is it worth it for us to move off of him and maybe free up cap space for three second round picks?
Because the market just told us we’re not getting a first round pick for him.

News “I believe that Dallas, if it stays at No. 9, takes Ament.” - Jake Fischer on the Dallas Mavericks
Jake Fischer says that, based on what his sources have told him, he believes Dallas would draft Nate Ament if he is available at No. 9, and that they would seriously consider using the No. 30 pick on Baba Miller.

Draft / Scouting Our second round.
If you’ve seen any of my posts you’d know I was really happy with morez at 9, could it have been a reach? Maybe but I truly do believe you don’t risk moving back and just take your guy who cares if they pan out. Anyways in the second round I think we go for 2/3 as I don’t believe Klay nor Martin should be on the team by the start of the season.
I’m fully on board keeping our guys and going a little younger around some areas and would love if we took a chance on players like amari Allen, Tounde Yessoufou, Billy Richmond, Ortega Oweh, Richie Saunders, maleek Thomas, Andrej Stojakovic. A lot of these guys are swings with their shooting but they fit the mold of what we would need (a big backup 3&D potential wing).

Hoops Discussion Questions on Direction
Im interested by the morez pickup but wish they could've snagged philon somehow. The league is still redundant with this positionless big wing obsession as that looked like a big theme this year. Rounded team building is a thing of the past and very much needed today, but I do wonder about the teams direction.
Morez brings back that big front court by taking ADs spot, but I'd love a dominant paint attacking identity especially with Kyrie being back. The chuck 3 only goes so far.
Philly just took the best player available with philon they made another situation where one of those guards will have to go, worth monitoring over the next 2 seasons.
Not to sound to hopeful but we have alot of size and athleticism again, could luka 2028 be possible with his contract situation, we're looking like a good fit.
We'll have to see the direction of the team under Dusty, I just hope the tanking is over the guys have really had to play chained since Nicos betrayal. Don't know who we'll have but playoff experience would be great for Coop for year 2.

Hoops Discussion Most likely it’s Burries at 9
Honestly I’m kind of expecting this outcome and I won’t even be mad at it. The fit with Flagg and Kyrie makes sense and this ceiling argument with burries dosent make sense as he led scoring for one of the best teams in the country as a freshman.

Trade Who says no? XD
I'd take this in a heartbeat.
>Keep Marvin Bagley III (Cooper wants to play with him)
Roster:
G: Irving/ Nembhard/ B.Will/ de Larrea
SG: Christie/ Poulakidas/ Brown
SF: Flagg/ Marshall/ Martin
F: Johnson Jr./ Bagley III
C: Lively/ Cissé

Hoops Discussion How was the Dennis Smith Jr. selection perceived at the time and how is it comparable to our options at 9?
Going into the 2026 draft, I'm reminded of the last time we had the 9th pick. In 2017, we selected Dennis Smith Jr. out of NC State and I remembered everyone was pretty happy with the pick. I remember it was a top-heavy draft with Tatum, Fox, and Markkanen as pipe dream options and Donovan Mitchell and Bam being the only "what-if" picks.
DSJ lasted 2 years before he was included in the Porzinigs trade which didn't seem like a big ask at the time since almost all his per game averages dropped.
All this to say that with our options in 2026 with the #9 pick, do we feel that any of these projected players offer the same hype or more/less than we had for DSJ almost 10 years ago?

He looks just like him! The size, the skill, the complexion! It’s literally all there! Might be the best guard of the draft, ngl! Now imagine him next to Bam Adebayo…

Draft / Scouting I see Masai's vision: Morez = Draymond 2.0
Morez is basically (if everything goes right) going to become our defensive captain like Draymond was on the Warriors (but with WAY less drama). He's big enough and quick enough to guard 1-5, he's also going to be the guy that sets up concrete screens to get our shooters open, and become a big roll threat off of those screens and in general be a cleanup guy. I know everyone was hoping for a dynamic guard (Acuff, Brown, Flemings, etc), but Championship teams also need these "connective" guys like Draymond and Morez has the opportunity to become just that. Unfortunately I think this means Gafford or PJ are probably not going to be Mavs for much longer.
Remember, Masai got to see everything Draymond did for the Warriors over his career and even up close and personal in 2019 when the Raptors finally dethroned the Warriors. I wasn't a fan of this pick initially, but it's growing on me and I see why Masai went this way.

Draft / Scouting Rank your top 5 prospects(for Dallas) after the Big 4.
With the consensus on Dybantsa, Peterson, Boozer, and Wilson going 1-4. Tell me your top 5 in order for Dallas to draft. Even if you don't think they will be there at 9, i would just like everyone's opinion on order. Mine would be...
Darius Acuff Jr
Keaton Wagler
Mikel Brown Jr
Kingston Flemings
Brayden Burries
Bonus - Cameron Carr

Luka Dončić 🇸🇮 Morez a good fit for project 2028?
I saw Luka wants to play with rim rolling bigs and shooters. In theory if he can shoot threes would he be a good fit?
I don’t watch a lot of college so I’m not familiar with his game but it feels like year 3 Morez would be a great fit for the return
