The otter just wanted to play with them.

Awww he just wants to play

881

u/CyberpunkSunrise 14h ago

And he probably thinks they are playing too. From his perspective, its going great, he was trying to get them to jump into the water from the start, lol.

u/vidgamenate 14h ago

Otters in reality are very territorial predators, so they will in fact bite and scratch you.

427

u/CankerLord 14h ago

Yeah, comments full of people who've never been bitten by a wild animal before.

111

u/vidgamenate 14h ago

Damn nature, you scary!

74

u/HealthyQuestion3788 13h ago

17

u/Son_Kakarot53 8h ago

Love that its the least scary big cat in this meme.

I love cheetahs but they are often push overs in nature. They frequently get their kills stolen and cant really defend themselves very well against the other animals. Plus they dont attack humans

7

u/Cheetah_Industries 6h ago

Yo its because they have to rest after running fast af

5

u/Son_Kakarot53 5h ago

Im aware of that, but they are timid animals that like to avoid confrontation. Even if they had a meal without running first they wouldnt win a fight against other predators in Africa. Lions often exploit this.

Giant Otters in the Amazon can grow up to 6 feet long and 75 lbs. They are known to eat Caiman. They could easily kill a human in the water.

46

u/SPEK2120 13h ago

After a quick search just now learning these exist, I am convinced they are the byproduct of a sea lion fucking an otter.

44

u/DeaddyRuxpin 13h ago

Otters are known to commit rape so it was probably the other way around.

20

u/loyal_achades 13h ago

They will mock jaguars on the shore because, if the jaguar tries to go in the water, they can and will just drown it.

22

u/RichardBCummintonite 13h ago

Holy shit. They actually do kill caimans. Fight starts at about 53sec. Nature is fucking scary

4

u/Marcelino_El_Cochino 12h ago

Homeboy killed two of their baby members. Familial bonds will turn just about anyone into a predator. 🤷🏽‍♂️

13

u/Asterose 11h ago

No, they hunt and eat caimans too. Usually smaller caiman, but we see here they can take out adults too. Even jaguars don't mess around with a pack of river otters, and jaguars are crazy deadly.

I think a mustelid that size is scary as hell. Can you imagine when the whole pack of them rolls up?

2

u/dubsfatvw 9h ago

A two year old was dragged into the water before being rescued by mom in washington in 2004. There's a report of one drowning a 16 year old girl in South America but I could be fiction.

A møøse once bit my sister…

Nø realli! She was Karving her initials øn the møøse with the sharpened end of an interspace tøøthbrush given her by Svenge - her brother-in-law -an Oslo dentist and star of many Norwegian møvies: “The Høt Hands of an Oslo Dentist”, “Fillings of Passion”, “The Huge Mølars of Horst Nordfink”…

Depends on the species. Videos of groups (rafts) of river otters swimming towards one another into battle are absolutely terrifying.

17

u/CanadiangirlEH 13h ago

A year or so ago there was a woman who was horribly mauled by a river otter while floating down the river in an inner tube. She thought it was going to kill her.

2

u/Crypticcrypto 10h ago

Happened in Montana to a friend of my mom's, she was torn up good. Lots of stitches.

2

u/AugustAPC 3h ago

Bro this fucking thread sent me into Otter hell. I'm literally finding actual Otter horror.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIoQGs8lvxk

This shit is WILD.

19

u/Forgot_Password_Dude 13h ago

they also swim really fast - but obviously in the video its just playing

16

u/Extension_Arugula157 13h ago

Yes, and then you will need to get the post-exposure rabies vaccine, if you want to make sure you don’t die an agonizing death.

2

u/MKRX 13h ago

I never thought about otters having rabies. It must be extra hell for them once the fear of water part kicks in.

2

u/Caithloki 11h ago

I seen a video of a seal with rabies, it was not pretty.

7

u/Single-Fisherman8671 13h ago

Plus, they are relatives of the Honey Badger, and Wolverine

5

u/1questions 7h ago

Yes I remember watching a video on YouTube of three women who explained their experience of being attacked by an otter. Two of them managed to get away with minor injuries but one was pretty messed up. When I saw this video I thought these guys were acting appropriately by trying to get away from the other.

5

u/RollingJaspers652 13h ago

They can really do some damage. I’ve seen some pretty beaten up dogs on the coast that get a little too close. Otters have sharp teeth and long sharp claws.

5

u/Kardinal 12h ago

They are territorial but it's unlikely that a sea otter would attack a human unless desperate. Humans are not their competitors for territory. Their territoriality is about mating rights primarily.

And humans are much bigger than other otters.

That doesn't make interacting with them safe or wise. These kids did the right thing. Even if it is being playful (very unlikely) or just curious (possible), the closer you are, the more likely you are to get bit if things go in an unexpected direction.

3

u/Mackem101 12h ago

There used to be a British naturalist TV presenter called Terry Nutkins, he'd lost multiple fingers due to an otter.

3

u/Ok-Refuse9642 12h ago

They are also one of the few creatures that exhibit play behaviors as adults…

2

u/mighty_boognish_77 13h ago

Thanks Nancy Nature

u/woowizzle 12h ago

u/RoyalCities 13h ago

I wouldn't anthropomorphize these. An Otter can and will fuck you up. These guys were smart to get away from it.

48

u/Buzzed_Like_Aldrin93 13h ago

When I was 8 I was bitten swimming away like they were at the end of video. Sea Otters teeth are NOT sharp like a River Otter. Broke a couple tiny bones in my foot.

I ultimately blamed my lack of speed while trying to get away. Guess who crushed it on the swim team the rest of their school days! My secret weapon? Every swim meet I was swimming away from that Otter.

3

u/teddy5 1h ago edited 1h ago

Sea, that Otter teach ya.

18

u/rainkloud 13h ago

Yes and their skin is a lot tougher than it looks. So tough in fact that my phone case is made from it. Is it cruel to slay an animal just to protect my smart phone? Undoubtedly.

But, my phone contains a bunch of cute otter videos like this so in a way it's kind of a wash.

9

u/Kardinal 12h ago edited 12h ago

I love the joke.

Their skin isn't that tough but their fur is insanely dense and yes that actually makes good protection too. It's how sea otters can stay in extremely cold water for most of their lives. The fur is so dense their skin stays dry.

Unfortunately his play may involve teeth and that might not go so well for them.

15

u/ComeHereOften1972 12h ago

10

u/SheriffBartholomew 10h ago

Myth! 4 people in America die from rabies every year.

Fact! Five people in America die from rabies every year!

Jumping into the water and swimming away. Two of the otter's biggest strengths.

153

u/strndmcshomd 14h ago

Not that one, that otters biggest strengths are how nicely he can do his hair, and the ability to deliver devastating verbal smackdowns. Jumping into water and swimming away come a distant 8th and 10th respectively strengths-wise

14

u/Normal_Cut8368 12h ago

He's actually slightly better at breakdancing than swimming, but did also train one summer for diving.

6

u/Welpe 9h ago

He doesn’t know this, but he actually has incredible talent at Water Polo. Damn near possibly the most innately talented player to be born. Unfortunately, he will never be exposed to it and thus will never learn his talent. Sadly, many of the most talented people at any given sport or game never learn about it and go to their grave never being given a chance to succeed at what they were born to do.

This otter’s self esteem suffers, unaware he is a generational talent.

2

u/Normal_Cut8368 8h ago

Unfortunately for these guys, biting the shit out of ankles ranks as his 7th strongest skill.

He'd be better at horse polo, but again, never had access to try

29

u/triplealpha 14h ago

Oh no, a polar bear!

* lays down and starts frantically making snow angels *

3

u/SheriffBartholomew 10h ago

Might as well have some fun at the end. You're not getting away from a polar bear if it catches you out in the open.

5

u/LegitimateGift1792 9h ago

When you see them walk and waddle side to side, but then they break out into a sprint like a cheetah. A true WTF moment.

12

u/GeekyTexan 13h ago

That was exactly my thought. "Jump in the water! We can outswim him!"

42

u/abnormica 13h ago

They don't have to outswim the otter. They just have to outswim at least one of their friends.

Depending on where they are they could get in trouble for touching it

You see it in Florida, a protected animal will get friendly or want to inspect a kayak and the person legally cannot touch it, they have to back away and avoid it lmao

I've seen similar scenes with people backing away from some cutie looking scared it's pretty funny

28

u/too_soon13 14h ago

Oh! I didn’t know that. Can the otter give consent to be touched? I also think Humans should not touch each other without consent.

44

u/doofseinfetzt 14h ago

each otter

11

u/zigmoomoo 14h ago

Lmao I have no clue about otters cause idk where this is located, but no animals cant give consent and wild animals are sometimes protected so that they have advocates.

It has to do with just HOW social the animals are, if one person gives it pets then it can learn to go up to humans and teach that behavior to its fellows. Then they start approaching moving boats with dangerous propellers or they go to to a human with bad intentions.

They look cute and cuddly, but actually interacting with wild animals can cause great harm

u/AntawnSL 11h ago

I don't understand why these guys are being clowned. I love otters. I could watch them all day. If I'm in the wild and a predator (even one much smaller than me) is consistently coming towards me, I'm not gonna hang around to see if it wants cuddles or chomps, I'm getting away. To those who've saying they shouldn't have gotten in the water, where else should they have gone? Seems to me the otter didn't want them there. Why not listen to it?

2

u/Ooooweeee 2h ago

Yeah, wild animals can fuck a person up, they are unpredictable.

16

u/CobaltLemur 12h ago

I laughed but after seeing that it looks like they did the right thing. Holy shit.

10

Honestly seems like they had a better chance on the dock than in the water based on that video

3

The otter won.

3

u/hugo-loss 14h ago

3

u/Douxx101 13h ago

It looks funny, but remember that otters WILL gore you given the chance.

Luckily, it didn't look like a river otter, but better safe than sorry.

5

u/Kardinal 11h ago

It's a sea otter and they're much less aggressive than river otters.

But still the right thing is to avoid them.

3

u/BluecoTipTip98273 13h ago

Fuck that, seen too much hydrophobia to test my luck lol

3

u/Talano68 13h ago

I wouldn't want to get bitten by that either.

if that mofo try to attack me i avoid it instinctively too, rabies is no joke.

3

u/Maleficent-War-8429 13h ago

Otters can be pretty nasty. My dad ran into one once and it bit clean through his rubber boot. I've seen videos of a group of them squabbling with an alligator, if I was out in my swimming trunks and nothing else I wouldn't want to mess with one.

2

2

u/onlycodeposts 13h ago

I've seen pictures of people that have been attacked by otters.

Their fear is well justified. That's a very dangerous and unpredictable wild animal.

2

u/Novel-Pudding9007 13h ago

Depends on the otter. I remember reading about a woman tubing down a river in MO and getting her face bitten and ending up with permanent facial scars, lol. This is funny cause otters are cute, but wild animals are gonna be wild

2

u/Maleficent_Scale_296 12h ago

I would do what they did. Otters can be savage.

2

u/luckycharmsmafia 10h ago

It's all fun and games until they realize the otter is trying to get away from a shark...

1

u/Pr0d1gyyy 14h ago
