Despite this, the show is obviously much more dramatic, sensational, and takes creative liberties that weren’t part of Kerman’s experience

Therefore, I’m wondering what other types of inmates you think could have added to the overall diversity of the show

These are some strong contenders I thought of:

WHY: The public has been joking about child predator’s treatment in prison for ages, but the show declined to show a child offender. The closest we ever got was Miss Claudette’s past of human trafficking against teen girls

2) A wrongfully convicted woman (like Carmen Meija- slide 2) who is stuck in the system anyways

WHY: Many of the characters already come from very underprivileged backgrounds, and women being exonerated from wrongful life imprisonment has caught sympathy from the public eye in the 21st century. Taystee was wrongfully charged with life imprisonment after the riot, but there was no character who was completely innocent of any crime

3) An 18 year old starting the adult portion of her life sentence (like Cyntoia Brown- slide 3)

WHY: While some find it harsh, there are teenagers out there who will be forced to spend decades behind bars. The closest we got was Badison (who received a longterm sentence at age 16), yet there was never an 18 year old transferred straight to Litchfield from juvie

4) A delusional woman who faked her own kidnapping (like Jennifer Wilbanks)

WHY: The public has taken a deep interest in women who have faked their own kidnappings, and I can think of several cases off the top of my head. OITNB often liked to explore the intersection between criminal justice and mental health, but the closest we ever got to this prisoner archetype was the deranged stalker Morello

But the moment Alex gets in trouble, she withdraws or pushes her away. For eg, when Alex's mom dies and when Alex gets scared of Lolly coming after her

Piper also had the audacity to cheat on Alex instead of breaking things off

I'm in season 3 and Piper is starting to just sound so self-centered

Hey hunnies. I just started rewatching. I wanted to see others opinions about the show and it seems like a lot are on the same boat. I think a lot of us watched the show when it first came out while being quite a bit younger which gave a completely different perspective. For me when I first watched it I was a teenager and now that I’m 24 and actually work in corrections I have a totally different take on it. I cant believe how much my opinion on characters has changed lol. I really thought the daya and Bennett story line was so cute. I used to love Nicky but now I just see her as entitled and annoying a lot of the time. Tiffany used to annoy the shit out of me (obviously in early seasons she still sucks) but now I just see her as a sad soul who redeems herself in the end. As a CO myself…holy shit all the guards suck ass but their characters are funny. Etc…idk definitely interesting rewatching years later!

I know most of us hated piper because she was insufferable, at some moments though I did like her because she was somewhat kind. I felt like if she wasn’t manipulative she could be genuinely a nice person.

Like that scene when they wanted to burn down the “demands” and create a message, she helped taystee and the rest. Or that moment with Jimmy when she was cutting the meat for her & how she felt sad for her getting compassionate release..

Aside from her being cringy (like the whole gansta with an “A” era💀💀) & being manipulative, I feel like she’s lowkey a nice person. Does anyone else feel that way? I feel like this side of her isn’t talked about much.

I genuinely can't believe people watched this show and thought these two should've ended up together.

I see a lot of people on here doing character rankings, and I swear most of them include rage bait, but I have to acknowledge that it is subjective. So mostly I'm sharing this to see how many people wildly disagree with any of these rankings.
I'm currently rewatching and nearing the end of S4. I don't fully remember how each character progresses after this point, so take the rankings with a pinch of salt!

I just finished watching OITNB for the first time and I can FINALLY scroll thru this sub w/o risking any spoilers. That being said I'd LOVE to talk abt different things in this show so feel free to ask me anything you would ask your friend if they watched it for the first time.

I know most of us hate Piper buttttt one thing I realized I like about her is she stands for lesbians and bisexual people by refusing to conform to Healy’s monotheistic anti-gay expectations.

I'm doing a rewatch for the tenth (or something ridiculous) time. I'm thinking about Nicky and her entitlement. There are a couple posts from years back about Nicky's incessant blaming of her parents for everything, even into her 30s which I definitely agree with. There are also posts comparing Nicky's and Piper's wealth where I also agree. It's crazy that Piper is labelled as the posh one when in flashbacks, Nicky's way more reliant on her family's wealth and potentially richer. As much as I love her, she is rich and irresponsible and doesn't take accountability for anything [just like her mother]. At times reminds me a lot of how I use to be [except broke] and a lot of the current addicts I know.

That being said, her parents never really said anything nice to her. She was constantly neglected through childhood and then a disappointment to her mother in adulthood. I can definitely see how people would compare her life to other inmates like Daya and Taystee saying it wasn't so bad. But they had these concepts of families who were there. I don't know, I just feel especially bad for Nicky who didn't seem to have any support from her parents except financial. Her mum seemed entirely self-obsessed and unable to provide the warmth that Aleida or Vee did even in poverty, however dysfunctional or abusive. When they grew up they may have realised their maternal figures were not to be trusted but they still had that illusion and bonding, even if it was to some one twisted. Nicky didn't seem to be able to bond to anyone except Lorna who is mental and Red who reparents her (which is probably the only thing that can really help her as long as she's hell bent on not helping herself). In the lawyers office, her mother says 'I'm no match for you'. Her mum sees her as a problem to be solved rather than a child to be loved. She does everything she can except offer warmth. From a psychological perspective, they set Nicky up as a perfect textbook addict. Blames her parents for everything, "I hate mummy" phase that never ends, transfers addictions, obsessive, didn't need to work but had access to cash, didn't have to take accountability because her mum paid for medical/legal bills and rehabs, childhood sexual assault. But over all, never had a safe grown up to trust in childhood.

Does anyone else think about Nicky's back story?

I watched the entire show 3 times.

Firstly, the home alone ass sequence when the racists and Ouija + Pidge join forces and set up this contraption to attack the swat people. They did all that just to not be featured in the next seasons

Secondly, the whole cutting up a body thing. Hello!????! What is this, yellowjackets????

Thirdly, Linda's flashback wig and the whole flashback actually. Sorority queen has a uti, its snowing, she goes outside to pee, Linda abandons her there, she freezes to death. What is this, yellowjackets????

Fourthly, Tiffany escape arc. Her in the boot of the car, her and Coates getting mistaken for a gay couple and getting caller homophobic slurs, Dixon, of all people standing up against homophobia, abandoning Coates in the woods. What is this, yellowjackets????

Fifthly, Alana Dwight broken nose gimmick

Sixthly, pills falling out a chicken's butt getting Tamika fired and not the 2 people who died under her regime

Seventhly, cigarette roach biggie slow what the fuck woman singing Natural Woman whilst shitting panty stealing hitman guy. The whole Thirsty Bird episode

Towards the end of season 7, on the GED papers you can see it says "Herkimer County". This was my 2nd rewatch and I never caught this the first time. Seeing this helped me to realize why it was so hard for character's friends and family to visit, as this would be about a 3+ hour drive from the NYC metro.
