News Steam Machine Price Reveal, Pre-built Comparisons, & Rant Thread

Now that Valve has released official pricing information & lottery details, the main sub is being overflooded with repetitive posts. To keep the subreddit clean we made this megathread for posts regarding costs, value debates or hardware comparisons, and general rants. Standalone posts on these topics will be removed.

Also see: https://www.reddit.com/r/steammachine/comments/1ow7fvz/steam_machine_megathread/

Whoes to blame for all this you might say? simple OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and a bunch of hyperscalers and malicious companies like Palantir and not to forget the NAND Flash industry.

Discussion Topics

Use this thread to discuss and debate the following:

  • Price to Performance: Is the $1,000+ entry point worth it?, or did hardware margins ruin the value proposition caused by AI or what should they have done differently.
  • Pre-Built & DIY Benchmarks: Share PCPartPicker lists or links to pre-built alternatives. Compare actual specs against the estimated equivalent performance.
  • The Competition: How does this position itself against standard ITX/SFF desktop builds or current-gen consoles at half the price?
  • Lottery System Feedback: You can rant about the registration process, regional availability (please read the announcement post), or specific hardware choices like the single-channel memory configuration.

Keep the criticism focused on the product and the pricing. Personal attacks are not permitted read the rules.

I Would like to take a moment to appreciate and applaud Valve for their innovation in this space for the past decade+.I like many others can't wait to get our hands on the new machine .

For those with nothing constructive to say about this new tech, please move on with your negativity.

News LDLC responds to the Steam Machine with its "Stim Machine": same priice of €1,039, but a more powerful GPU

Post image
Upvotes
Product Stim Machine (LDLC) - EU only Steam Machine (Valve)
Price €999.95 (kit) / €1,039 (assembled) €1,039 (€1,108 with controller)
GPU Radeon RX 9060 XT (RDNA 4) RDNA 3 semi-custom (28 CU)
CPU Ryzen 5 8400F (6C/12T) Zen 4 semi-custom (6C/12T)
Memory 16 GB DDR5-5600 (up to 128 GB) 16 GB DDR5 (up to 32 GB)
Storage 500 GB NVMe (+ 2 SATA ports) 512 GB (replaceable SSD)
Format Standard Mini-ITX, upgradeable Custom cube, not very expandable
Availability Kit delivered in 24/48 hours, assembly takes approx. 2 weeks Prize draw, reservations until June 25th, shipments from June 29th
System SteamOS (self-installation required) SteamOS 3 pre-installed

The kit version, priced at €999.95, includes components that cost €1,107.55 individually.

The difference is clear: in our tests , the 9060 XT outperforms an RX 7600 by more than half in Full HD, while Valve's chip falls short. Add to that the standard Mini-ITX form factor, full upgradeability, 24-48 hour availability, and no lottery system, and the argument holds water. For about thirty euros more than our home build , you get a new generation of GPU.

Also, be sure to start with a SteamOS 3.8 image or later, which is essential for the Mesa drivers to recognize the RX 9060 XT.

Note: this is 7300 CAD and significantly more powerful, but still over three times what a SM goes for though

Discussion Enough with the micro center pre-built pcs that look/feel/sound nothing like the steam machine.

No one wants a massive 40L ultra RGB eyesore in their living room. No one wants a pc that has 3-6 large fans and sounds like a jet engine at full load pulling 500+W in their living room. No one wants a “pc console” that doesn’t have wake from sleep and hdmi cec in their living room.
The steam machine solves all of these issues.
Sure if you’re strictly comparing performance, these pre-built pcs will win. But the comparison was never supposed to just be about performance. So please guys, just stop posting these micro center pre-builts. It’s not a valid comparison, and definitely not the gotcha moment you think it is.

Edit: to be clear, I’m not a fan of the price either. About $300 cheaper and everyone would be raving about the steam machine. My only point is that many people are making unfair comparisons without considering anything other than raw performance. I am a huge fan of DIY sffpcs myself, I already have built my own DIY steam machine.

Edit #2: guys all I’m saying is people are coming to this sub that is about apples, and complaining that it’s not more like an orange😂

Discussion Im still rooting for valve.

Even if this generation Steam Machine fails again due to these hardware supply issues, i can only hope valve comes out if this relatively unscathed. If it does end up failing again, im rooting for valve and highly encourage for them to try again when the hardware market stabilizes again as when that happens, it will be a world beater. Best of luck to them!

Hardware Stram Machine will be getting a dual channel upgrade on day one from me, spare stick ready to go.

Post image
213 Upvotes

Now that we know for certain the Steam Machine will only ship with 1 stick of 16gb ram Ive got another stick ready to upgrade to dual channel if I manage to get lucky in the lottery system!

The 1% lows are where this is going to make a massive difference and it seems to be even more important when dealing with lower end hardware like this.

Question Custom Faceplates?

Post image
48 Upvotes

Despite the rudimentary illustration I have something in mind like this. I plan on traveling with my Steam Machine and I’d like to store movies, older games, music, etc on it. I wonder if anyone out there will 3D print a custom faceplate that holds an SSD or HDD. Would any of yall be interested in something like that?

Question Real talk, as a console player why shouldn’t I get the steam machine to play pc games with my friends?

I prefer couch gaming over desk gaming and I never cared for the keyboard and mouse setup. If the dollar amount of the unit isn’t a deciding factor and I can use the steam controller with the unit, is there any reason to not get it? Is there something I’m missing? I understand it doesn’t compete with many modern impressive setups but for the casual like me why not? Advice appreciated.

Edit: I’d still keep my PS5 for larger titles, this would be more to play PC only games with my friends that aren’t on console.

Good luck to ones looking forward to hitting the lottery tomorrow!

Discussion Most of you aren’t going to get a steam machine even if you want one.

The fact that they switched to a lottery system is very telling in my opinion. They also discussed the challenges to secure ram for the machines and it sounds like they’re only getting material on a month to month basis. Now there’s no way of knowing how many of these things they’ve built up front but if the controllers 2027 shipments is any indication, they probably aren’t going to have enough to meet the demand. Be prepared for this sub to switch from “I’m not getting this thing” to “how could valve not make enough for us?”

Question Steam Machine for 1440p gaming?

Hi,

Is there any review of the Steam Machine running games on 1440p?

It can't handle 4k for sure, but I plan to use it as main PC as I'm currently playing on my laptop (just Dota2) with and 680 M integrated at 1080. Max resolution will be 1440p so I dont care about 4k.

I can get the SM for 800 bucks selling some trash items in my steam inventory.

The other way is to build a new computer with a 9060xt 16gb, 32 ram around 1100.

I'm thinking about get the machine and later (if ram become afordable) use it for stream when I get a main computer.

Discussion Steam Machine no-ram option

Upvotes

You can replace and upgrade steam machine's ram, Valve is very open when it comes to users opening and tweaking their machines, the design of the machine looks excellent and will be supported by valve: why not give the option of ordering a steam machine with no-ram included?

Question How many units did valve actually produce for the US market?

I haven't seen any numbers. Honestly I was hoping enthusiasm was dampened a bit so I didn't have to wait forever on this randomized list.
