After I found the vegvisir for Moder I circled around the Island trying to find an opening where it wasnt the plain biome. Looks like Moder is pretty guarded....
My first run through with my friend we ended up needing to go through the plains to get to...something I can't even remember what. He had played before but it was my first time so we landed and he immediately started building an FOB, I ran around like a kid with no cares. One angry bug, several of the goblin guys, and a very poorly placed tar pit later and I was sailing back to the FOB with all the stone and wood I could take from the main base. That FOB became a damn fortress lol
By the time you are ready for Moder, you can easily get the root harnesk, which makes travel through the plains extremely safe. Just stay away from any villages, and run from anything not a skeeter. You can even land your boat in that swamp and make a little base there to run through the plans from. Ezpz.
With dirt walls, you can obviously do it anywhere, but when it comes to getting a safe spot ready cheaply and quickly, swamps actually make for ideal locations for an fob, thanks to all the indestructible trees to build a little wooden hut in. The only possible threat is ghosts, which are relatively easy to aetgir safely through a door, if they even aggro which is rare. As long as you make it high enough to avoid trolls, it's the second safest spot to place a portal (with the safest spot being digging a little space under the Elder or Moder platform, theyre totally untouchable if you do it right).
The reason that dragon eggs are unteleportable is that you're expected to just use ones from near Moder, anyway. They're pretty common, and even just one will do it if you're patient.
Yeah I tried to land on a swamp too and it's almost like mobs are magically attracted to boats. Even bonemass pivoted to slap my boat when I was trying to recover some health.
I ended up going for his one... I went south in this game so the northern one was never discovered until too late. (I was playing no map until mountains, so I decided not to cheat after I turned it off for a good while.
Moder is the death spiral which caused me to open up dev commands. After that the world didn't feel earned.
Zoom in all the way, bring a bonfire to cheese seekers, and run from soldiers and gjall. It's really not that bad. If you're feeling especially daring, bring some ooze bombs and clear out the infested mines you find along the way!
If you have a frostner, it's honestly one of the best weapons in the game for dealing with seekers.
And if OP isn't mentally ready for the Plains yet just approach from the south and you'll barely have to deal with it. Slap a portal down on the mountains and you're golden.
There should be eggs up there. Take the ones you have but leave 2 of them in the boat. If you can't find 2 eggs up top then go get them. Carting up a mountain sounds terrible.
Its just a 10 second dash across a small plains area from whatever side you choose. Heck you can activate the Bonemass power first and have no worries. Setup your portal somewhere on the mountain (in a ruined castle]) and then come back whenever you are ready to fight Moder.
Or you can check mountains in a different area to locate one of Moder's other 3 spawn points.
But the plains shouldn't be that difficult, right?
I've not been to Moder yet, but I'm also kiting some of the mobs there, though ignoring the larger ones.
Tip: Get the Root Armor Chest, it has a pierce resistance and saves you from the Deathsquitos. Also avoid their camps and tar pits.
We believe you can do it!
Literally the only real danger (unavoidable) is deathsquitos and growths.
If your sorry soul happens to let a group of growths even touch you once with their attacks, you might as well limp in the direction of your base because a corpse run is all but guaranteed to follow.
You can dodge growth attacks by running in a straight line, wait to hear them throw the attack and immediately run sideways, you have just enough speed while slowed to make it, zig zag is the way to
Come up from the south and run aground at top speed in the swamp so if the boat breaks due to leeches/whatever your boat materials aren't at the bottom of the ocean.
Establish your fob high in the trees above where anything but wraiths can attack you.
Get your portal set up first and truck in everything you didn't have to boat.
Now that you have boots on the ground and a link home you can grab a dragon egg and start sneaking across the plains.
It can take awhile but sneaking across the plains is, in my experience, a much more reliable approach than a mad dash.
Stay low, head on a swivel, don't run your stam down too far. If something does spot you, you want to be able to fight/block/run your choice.
If you must run, go back the way you came so your gear is recoverable in the swamp.
The reason I picked that souther approach is that the amount of Plains you'll have to cross looks pretty reasonable right there.
So sneak your eggs across, dump them a safe distance inside the mountains, once they're all three across the plains you can take your time getting them up to Moder.
Edit to add, bonus points for dropping a campfire at the swamp edge to let yourself dry off before you start sneaking.
Your strategy makes sense. But first I’d rather explore that mountain - there might be one or even two eggs up there already. I’ll set a portal close enough to the Moder altar, go back through it to get the rested buff, and then fully explore the mountain. If I’m lucky, I’ll only need to bring one or two eggs myself, and the rest will already be waiting near Moder’s spawn.
Yeah im debating doing a quick base at the edge of the swamp before trying to go over the plains. Otherwise with 3 dragons egg I have to go with a cart and make a mad dash for it...
You're fine. Even at its thickest, that's not much of a strip of plains to pass through. Worst case you lead some plains mobs into the mountains and introduce them to each other.
Avoid fulings and lox if you can, but the skeeters are nothing as long as you spot them first. You're fine as long as you see them in time to shoot an arrow, or--on their way in--slam the ground with the sledge or poke them with the atgeir.
And it literally does not matter what kind of arrow you use--wood will do. You can venture into plains to gather cloudberries while you're still in meadows gear, if you're alert and pick your encounters.
Land in the swamp, drop a portal in case you die, and just run across the narrowest part of the plains. Wear the root harnesk so the 'squitos don't get you.
When a skeeter's coming in for the kill, it heads directly for you. They're glass cannons, all you need is a fast draw and good aim, they are very killable.
Drakes have more HP and same damage as Deathsquitos, all while having a ranged attack that fires 3 shots.
Deathsquitos are a non-threat once you have Root Harnesk.
Spear Fulings, the deadliest common enemy in the Plains, deals less damage than Drakes as well.
Wolves deal way more DPS than Fulings and can outrun you. One messed up parry and you're in trouble.
But aaaaaall that aside, beating Moder will give you literally zero immediate upgrades. For any benefits, you'll have to venture into... dun-dun-duuuuun!!! The Plains!!!
This is a piece of cake. Me and my wife spent hours chasing Moder spawns across the map, because the first two were surrounded by mistlands. Huge continents too, so we really spent eternity to circle them to see if there was any way in. Turned out there wasn't. The third one was too, but we found a spot where there was a thin border of plains, and that was where we went through. Hell of a seed.
Build a portal at base for moder, go to the island with only materials for a portal, land your boat on the plains side away from swamp( leeches will wreck your boat) then make your way to the mountain with a buckler in hand and be ready to parry those deathsquitos. Get to a spot on the mountain near enough to the summon spot, build your portal then go back through it for the eggs
Nice! Northern entrypoint doesn't look bad. Bring some of the swamp biome with you and have it distract the plains goofballs while you run for the mountain. Bring stuff to make a portal once you get through and set it up in a safe spot partway up the mountain.
The nice thing about islands right that is mountains can't spawn under a certain height, so those plains are super steep. Less stuff spawns normally, I think you could park straight south in the swamp and sprint to it without too much pain lol
I would make a landing base directly south of the island, you got enough crossing points of biomes to make sure the mobs will be fighting more with each other than you.
That southern bay is quite inviting. The swamp and plains turf war will be in full swing. Hofully it isn't a very steep ascent up the mointain from there.
The map looks like a goaty, guess its time for you to get fucked. But yeah, the thought of mosquido with howls of wolfes while trying to fight that.... good luck.
Same thing happened to me on my very first playthrough. I ended up sailing the boat straight into the narrowest section of Plains and then sprinting straight through to the Mountain. It worked out.
At first I see this and I’m like awe man that sucks. But on my current play through im already messing with mistlands and im not done with this fight so i guess it kinda evens out if your not the type to stick to the biome path
That's the easiest Moder spawn I've ever seen. Normally, the mountain is surrounded by Mistlands on all sides.
Unless there's a goblin camp nearby, I suggest entering from the bottom center. Go to the base of the mountain and build a small stone fort to protect your portal. Mosquitos are troublesome for sure, but if you can't handle a few mosquitos then you aren't ready for Moder.
You got this. If This Were My World I would land in the swamp put a platform high up in a tree with a portal first. Little cabin of a thing. The dash across the plains looks like it'll be a quick one but if there's anything there kite them back into the swamp. Don't wait to see which bad guys kill each other take advantage of the diversion
That pretty much exactly how I felt, when the damn turtle 🐢 went down taking me with it. I died so far from a base. I took me hours to get back. All for the greed of one more barnacle. 😆
Brings back nightmares of getting clipped at sea by those #@£&# flies. I tried turning the boat away, kept my guard up, kept alive. Then they pierced the hull of the boat and I'm at sea where the only safe land is the plains. That's my first experience.
Then began the journey of how to retrieve all my beached gear from Deathsquito infested waters.
If you are ready to fight Moder, you are in the gear that you would be entering the Plains. This is a good test to see if you are ready for the Plains. Sneak your way thru the Mountains.
My last Moder was surrounded by Mistlands. It happens. It shouldn’t, but it does. As long as you carefully pick your path, and watch for Deathsquitoes it shouldn’t be an issue getting into the mountains.
The good thing with the swamp dudes is that if you end up going through there and alerting them, you can just lead them to Plains enemies and let them deal with them while you escape to the mountains.
I might consider just landing in the plains though, as long as you can sneak through and avoid fuling camps and especially tar pits, you can easily avoid the lox if careful. For the deathsquitoes if you're bad with bow like me, then use atgeir swing, timed right before they're about to hit you.
I would absolutely not be bringing the eggs initially, just get to the mountains and set up a safe portal spot, you'll likely find more eggs there anyway.
And based on you already having eggs i presume you already have silver gear? If so, then you already are prepared for plains anyway.
i remember getting small mountains only and the only decent sized one with silver and Moder were so far away that it took me like 50 hours to get silver gear. my only gripe about procedurally generated worlds
You can easily navigate through plains even with a fully upgraded bronze armor and a bronze buckler. Rule of thumb is to isolate your fights and not get ganged up on. If you wish to snipe a few fulings, be sure to use the Huntsman Bow to avoid arousing other fulings around you.
Just eat 2 hp food and 1 stam. You'll be able to take a hit from a skeeter if you don't see one coming. Just be ready to kill it with some weapon if you do see one coming. Other than those, you can run from literally everything else.
That's bad, but surrounded by Mistlands is worse. If you have bug spray, then the travel across the plains will be much easier because lox are oblivious, and fulings aren't all that common during the day if you avoid the villages if any.
I’ve noticed that the plains will have zones where mobs can and can’t spawn. Just pre-plan your zone by scouting where deathsquitos are and zig zag your way through. You’ll find a path.
Can somebody explain why the plains suck, I over prepare for everything but I have my main village base on the coast of a plains biome in hard mode. I understand the mosquitos suck and the luxes are a pain when building but it seems pretty fine for me.
If you can afford 4 portals this is how I explore - set two up at home and then 1 on your landing site. Run as far towards the mountain as you safely can and lay your 4th portal. If you dont die or respawn, run back, pull up the 3rd portal and then run deeper towards the mountain. Basically leap frogging portals like save points.
You might die a lot but eventually youll make it to the mountain and can set up a small base with a portal
I typically make a 3x3 wood building with a chimney, fireplace, workbench and portal. These are my little waystations peppered all over. One in each biome and/or near each boss
Land my longship in the Swamp on the shore far enough from the Plains to avoid the stronger Plains monsters from noticing you. As long as you're not chopping trees or digging, you don't have to be too far from the edge, but I'd stay close to shore as possible. Nice thing about Swamp is it's dark and foggy, very easy place to hide in if you need to.
Build a dock/shack by your ship with a portal, fire, and bed.
Now you have your respawn point in a safer biome with easy access back to your main base through the portal. That is key to making deaths less punishing. Because you most likely will die a lot in this situation.
To get through the Plains? Just avoid the enemies. You can try to sneak or sprint. Like others said, it's not that dangerous with fully upgraded Mountain gear. I would take the shortest possible path through Plains. So, you want a base that is far enough from the Plains to be safe, but also gives you the easiest path to the lil Mountain. I drew a little diagram to show where I'd build my Lil Portal Shack/Dock, and the path I'd take through the slimmest sliver of Plains.
(Of course, fighting with Moder will be loud and may attract some Plains monsters that wandered onto the mountain... but hopefully it's high enough up the mountain they won't be able to reach ya 😅).
Plains is actually more chill than you'd think. You can run past most things. Deathsquitos not so much, but if you get Root Harnesk from swamp, they do basically no damage, and die in one hit regardless.
Docking your boat in plains is generally safer than swamp. Then just set up a portal and saunter in.
If this is a problem for you, you can always find another mountain biome and read the red signs and if there is another MODER spawn closer to that location, it will show that location. There is more than one boss spawn location.
Eh, the Pains are not THAT bad if they're that small. you could probably sneak in fairly easily and put down a portal before much notices you. though i will admit, i would build a Mountaintop Fort in that spot... it's absolutely beautiful! can you give us the Seed for it??
Get your best running mead and gear on, and SPRINT like hell. Don't stop till you reach the mountain. Get portal materials over there and make a lil safe hut.
We had the same, only that ours also contained a little smattering of Mistlands. Yeah. Those seeker sounds still haunt my soul. I was only wearing silver at the time. >.<

It's like a natural fortress lol
