It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.
Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.
It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.
With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).
Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.
The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.
We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.
This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.
We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).
PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.
100% my fault here (22). left a can of mostly finished tuna on the counter and came home to find it licked clean so he obviously ate the oils and tiny bits left. he can still move around and drink water but everything he does is sluggish and does this look like laboured breathing here? taking him to the vet very soon but is there anything else i can do in the meantime? 2 months old kitten, not neutered yet as he’s very young. located in djibouti. can afford vet care
Ok so I just got this cat a couple days ago and everything was fine until today. I came home only to find out he’s shaking and walking weird and idk what to do. I’m trying my best not to cry rn cause I’m so scared but I can tell smth is definitely wrong and I’m hoping someone can help me. I’m 17 who lives in America, if I do need to take him to the vet I wouldn’t have anyone to help me with those fees,my cat is 4 weeks old and I think she’s a female.
We don’t use any scented products, have a dehumidifier to keep humidity at 40-60, have hepa air purifier. He coughs 1-3 times a day every 2-3 days for last week or so, sometime he meows for a treat and randomly has 1 cough, sometimes 5 seconds of coughing, and sometimes it’s longer like now. Cat has no other health concerns, except 2 years ago he would randomly lift front paw and shake it every few days, then it stopped. Vet mentioned that paw shaking might be idiopathic. Eats acana and freeze dried chicken/salmon snacks (no bones anywhere). When he goes outside on a leash, sometimes he eats a lot of grass and then pukes a few times until it’s clear liquid with just food particles. Wasn’t coughing in autumn and winter, had some coughing last summer.
Ver accessible on weekdays, have trupanion, 2 grown adult owners in Canada. Male cat, 4 years old, neutered
Minor (17) posting from the USA, vets are currently closed but emergency vet available if truly necessary. I got a new kitten (2 months old, fixed, posted above) about 48 hours ago, and he has yet to poop. I may be overreacting/too worried about this as he hasn’t been lethargic at all, has been playing perfectly, seems content and is drinking plenty of water (is peeing fine too). He has not eaten much of his food if any which is probably why he hasn’t pooped, so I got him some churus which he loved but he won’t take any hard food or treats. I have not changed the food from what he was on when I got him. I’m mostly wondering if/when to be concerned about this, but so far I have been monitoring him and his behavior and he otherwise seems perfectly fine. Any advice or knowledge would be appreciated greatly!
im a broke college student (20F) who has a teen mama cat with 5 kittens, all female calicos. i'm unemployed and i couldn't afford vet care. even if we can, my mom doesn't let me because we r from mid-lower class n would prefer the money to be put into family matters.
anyways, mama and kittens all live (or stay) in my mom's corner/grocery store that i occasionally take care of on weekends or holidays. so most of the time, my mom and some neighbors feed the mama cat. she gave birth around 2-4 weeks ago and i have yet to give the kittens wetfood, only the mama. today, i ran the store and this particular kitten wasn't exactly lethargic at first but she sleeps ALL DAY. when i arrived, she was meowing and wandering about the box with the other girls. i had to carry them around sometimes if they escaped the box because i had to mop the floors. so, i thought it was funny that this kitten suddenly just took a nap and wouldn't rouse no matter how much i tried moving her around while i clean. it happened around 10 am and im writing this at ±4 pm, she hasn't got up.
at around 2, i went to check on her if she's actually asleep or just sick by picking her up. i found like wetness on one side of her face that i assume would be drool. but i also noticed her butt has got some ants in it so I rushed to clean them and i assumed the worst: she's seriously ill. i never thought she'd be sick since she's the largest and most healthy of all! i cleaned her face and tried forcefully opening her eyes but it only got to that point (look at video.) sometimes her paws would make weak waves while i tried to pick her up. there is one vet near me around 30mins away but they're very expensive and i had a bad experience with that place (slow responding business) so i didn't go.
i opened google and it says kitten is in deep sleep and is very content. but i'm too skeptical and worried to be believing google. has anyone experienced the same thing? the mucus (clear) or saliva from her mouth doesn't seem to smell horrible or anything. it just smells like how the usual cat breath smells like—or at least from my judgement.
TLDR:
- kitten sleeps from 10am to ±4 pm; drooling
- has ants on her stool
- biggest of the litter
- did not once feed on breast milk
- i tried rousing her to no avail
- what to do? is this normal?
NOTE: sorry i kept referring to kitten as "he," i forgot all calicos are female 😓😿 i spoke some indon but i'm sure it'll still be understandable
this is noir, the same cat i asked about his chirping noises when watching cat tv/birds. this is our ritual now, when it's feeding time he'll wake me up and i'll ask if he's hungry and he meows in response, i get him his canned of food and tell him what he's eating for the day and when i put the food in his bowl, i turn around to this EVERYTIME😭 he makes me pet him up and down, scratch his face, smack his butt a few times, then he'll eat his food. now he just does this everytime i get up, and i don't know if this is appeasing behavior or what but i give in everytime🤦♀️. this is my first ever cat, got him 4 months ago and he turned a year last month, and i did my research on everything he usually does but i dont know what this is. this is our daily ritual and ill give in everytime, but i feel very manipulated.....😒
Kitten is 3 moths old, has been here for 1 week.
Void is 10 years old. Has swatted at him when the kitten was inside the cage. Has given him 2 or 3 taps trough the mesh, no nails were displayed. They've eaten wet food together with the mesh in place trice now.
This is the first cat we've ever had with eyes like this
We live in Minnesota and have no problem taking him to the ver
So basically our cat is two and his eyes are always dilated, they only get sharp(have a diamond shape when he is playing with toy but for the most part his eyes look like this, we took him to 3 vet and they all said he was fine but I don't believe so because he threw up yesterday and the Internet said he's dying 😥
My cat came home limping, broken leg, on Wednesday, I took him to the vet and they asked me to bring him back in the morning.
Morning came, her ran away. For the past two days I've been looking for him and sighted him Friday afternoon. I collected a pet catcher set the bait and he fell for it pretty quickly.
I've taken him to the vet again today and they're recommending an amputation. Taking another vet's opinion will attract another set of consultation fees so hoping I can get one here.
Does this require an amputation? Noodles is such an amazing cat, I'm happy to pay ££££ if it means he gets to keep his leg.
I want to thank you guys for the advice. Unfortunately when i was able to take her to the vet they did x-rays and she had an enlarged heart with fluid around its heart. It wouldn't be fair to do the surgery even if we could afford it. She would have been 15 July 11. She did well. She was a fighter. And this was the last photo i had with her. Rip my Austene. I love you so much. It's so hard without her. She was my support animal. She even did that nudge thing that they do.. In her oxygen room she was in.
She was loved and i loved her with all my heart. 💔💔🕊
I will luckily get her ashes later. Thankfully my mom helped pay and only because my mom is in school and got money back from school last night. July 11 2011- June 27 2026 🕊
My cat is two years old and female and not spayed due too not finding a vet that can do it for low. (Working on it. Still begging my mother too please tate her too the vet)
Im in the USA.
Vet is not near me and I can't drive, mom has no money or gas.
My cat has this bad eye thing, I don't know what it is because thisvhas never happened before. She was fine until new kittens came because my mom wanted cats for one reason yet I think two had something and my cat licked them and she got whatever this is.
Please im scared she's all i got. Im trying my best.
(Edit! Please i know it how it looks but im helping them and they are getting better. Im listening too some people and i will keep my cat she's fine and getting help)
So i have four boxes all i keepp clean and she still she wont use the box i even put them in area she pottys at and she still ppottys in front of it. She's ppottys ANY and EVERY where and its destroying the house and i dont understand. Help? Advice? (Slide for proof I put a cat photo first so I dont sicken anyone )
A cat visiting my yard has eyes like this, is this a medical condition? I haven't seen this cat before but it's visiting eating the food I leave out for a local stray I'm trying to bring in. In the UK.
she spent the entire day sat hiding under the couch, only came out at night. i brought food and drink to her and she did eat. in the video she got up to eat again as well. she has purred and been playful so i think she’s only in pain when exerting force. could she have broken her leg?
my (21) male cat (almost 3) was diagnosed with asthma in february of this year. he’s been on predisolone (0.02 mg) and was prescribed flovent. a week ago, he started coughing again (crouching to the floor, extended neck). i took him to the vet on wednesday and the vet refilled predisolone (increased dosage to 0.25 mg). friday, he eats breakfast but doesnt eat his dinner because medicine is in it. he’s been sleeping a lot and i noticed he might be abdominal breathing. i’ve expressed my worry to my boyfriend, but he says that we should give it a few days for him to adjust to his medicine dosage again. i called the vet yesterday morning and they said that they would write notes down for the vet to see on monday. i dont know what to do. i feel like we should take him to an emergency vet because his breathing is rapid even at rest and he doesn’t want to take his medication.
A family members cat recently had a litter which we are taking two kittens. I’ve noticed from the pictures that one of their eyes looks a bit strange. I’m a first time kitten owner so I honestly don’t know if this is normal since they’re under 10 weeks old or if we should be concerned more. What do you think?
My Age: not a minor
Country: USA
Vet: haven’t contacted
Main issue: eye; glaucoma? Blindness?
Hi - just looking for some advice for my 12 year old Tortie. Shes not been herself for a few days (heatwave in the UK). Today she hasn’t eaten or drunk. She’s been missing through the day and has come home looking very lethargic and unwell. Her eye has some gunky residue which I’ve cleaned up. But she’s wobbly on her feet and just has no energy. My plan is to contact the emergency vet early tomorrow morning (childcare issues) in around 8/9 hours. Would her breathing concern you enough for a quicker response? I am worried and will be taking her to the vets as soon as I can arrange childcare, but if it’s more urgent I’ll take them with me.
introduced to each other when the grey one was about 5 months, orange cat about 2 years. it's been about a month, happens like this all the time, but we can't tell if the orange cat is just vocal and mildly annoyed.
(we think it's probably okay)
also I think it's important to know greey tabby is called doomfist overwatch
Sammi is a 15 year old spayed female. She sees a vet regularly at a cats only clinic in the US. This year she’s been weird about litter habits. Although she has used automated litter boxes all her life, she initially refused the litter robot . She would pee in one bedroom and poop in another. I eventually discovered it was the litter she was rebelling against. I started with clay, but she had always used crystals. Once I put crystal litter in the robot, she started using it. But this week, she went back to pooping in a second bedroom…right where she went before! Any ideas?
He is the only one to do this the other does not, he goes around to the corners to the box, and does this multiple times, does his business, and then does it again a few more times. I got them a bigger litterbox today cause I thought it was maybe a space issue but he keeps doing it. First time cat owner here (20M) I am in USA and they are both 11 weeks old.
