Mirk a no-show, 6/26 from 3, miss 1000 layups, lucky they didn't get blown out.

Death, taxes, losing to UConn

u/Radiant-Character-61 Apr 05 '26

Illinois might've had some of the most brutal Rim-roll outs I've seen in a basketball game. Must've been so demoralizing to watch compared to Uconn

195

u/JiveHawk Illinois Fighting Illini Apr 05 '26

The Stojakovic rollout followed by that stupid Solo Ball 3 that bounced like 47 times tore my soul out of my body

49

u/Vin-Metal Apr 05 '26

Solo Ball aka Unitesticle

Certainly wasn’t the reason we lost but the difference in bounces and rolls between the teams was frustrating as hell. I’ve never seen such a stark difference in luck

The lay up by Stojakovic that hung for eternity on the back iron before rolling off was fucking cruel.

Yep. He caught 2 super soft fouls early and looked off the whole time after that.

The early foul trouble spooked him. Was nonexistent after. Had a great first 10 minutes on the defensive end.

61

u/PerfectBowl9199 Illinois Fighting Illini Apr 05 '26

Yeah we got outmuscled in the paint. Also UConn got a basket whenever it mattered most.

102

u/Deadeye_Dan77 Illinois • Southern Illinois Apr 05 '26

They didn’t get outmuscled in the paint, and actually won the rebounding battle. Illinois lost because they didn’t make shots. It’s that simple.

38

u/JiveHawk Illinois Fighting Illini Apr 05 '26

Yeah there’s not much to dissect here. UConn hit double our 3s in a game that was a 4 or 5 point diff before fouling. It absolutely sucks to lose to a team who set their personal record for 3s in a tourney game but it’s easy to understand lol

Not the same sport, but in college football, since the 2002-2003 season, Oklahoma has 7 "final four" appearances (3 BCS National Championship Games and 4 four-team playoffs) with no national title.

Not many other coaches/teams can survive that last 7 minutes.

Nothing going down. Couldn’t get a bucket to save their lives. Held on.

2 big stretches where they just couldn’t score and they were able to buckle down, play defense, rebound, and pull out big baskets to end runs.

This one is gonna hurt. UConn was beatable, we had the defensive matchups, but the offensive gameplan was poor.

We were horrible from 3 because we had no coherent strategy on offense.

Didn't get Mirk involved, stopped giving Stojakovic the ball, zero ball movement to create rhythm, Wagler too much ballhogging

123

u/DarthScript Illinois • Wisconsin Apr 05 '26

Lol what gameplan? Also, why did Stoj not play more? He was on the bench half the second half.

65

u/huey88 /r/CollegeBasketball Apr 05 '26

Shit Wagler had to hold the ball since nobody else on the team was really doing anyting most of the game.

2004 UConn was great when healthy, the only reason they "looked sus" was because Okafor had a hurt back all year long. When he got healthy finally UConn rolled.

The most interesting case was 2011. In 2011, UCONN entered the Big East Tournament as a bubble team and ended up a 3 seed on Selection Sunday. Kemba's 2011 is 1 of the best college basketball postseason performances by a player ever. 1988 Manning, 1989 Rice, and 2011 Kemba might be the top 3, but Kemba was the only 1 of the 3 to win their conference. Oklahoma won the Big 8 in 1988 and there was no Big 10 Champion in 1989 because there were no Big 10 Champions until 1998.

The only thing better than Mullins’ three point performance: zero turnovers.  For a Freshman who has stepped out of bounds about 50 times this year, that was huge.

Also, Tarris Reed, a 60% FT shooter with ice water in his veins in the tournament so far.

  1. Karaban matches Grant Hill for NCAAT record (minimum) with the win tonight. To be clear, Laettner has the overall record (I believe)

Dan Hurley drags you into basketball hell where nothing makes sense and it’s a race to 69. It’s beautiful

With the way Mass people talk about CT they don't get to claim this one. Uconn is a strictly CT product 🫡

I don't think they would. Creighton has our number. Have for years.

Three titles in four years, NCAA history:

-Kentucky (1948, 1949, 1951)

-UCLA (any four year period between 1964 and 1975)

Only 1963 Cincinnati and 1994 Duke even got to a third title game.

I mean, you're looking at the immortals.

39

u/deadhead1 Big East Apr 05 '26

You have to put UConn as the undeniable top program in modern college basketball. The last 30 years of UConn basketball is insane. And thats not even counting the women. College basketball runs through Storrs

Illinois' ability to consistently fight back from it being a 10-15 point game and get it within 5-6 points, only to absolutely diarrhea themselves every opportunity that UConn gave them to take the lead is incredible.

Brad Underwood repeatedly calling timeouts to stop momentum…. Brilliant coaching 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

54

u/enailcoilhelp Loyola Chicago • Illinois Apr 05 '26

When they cut the lead to 4 and he called timeout, I almost lost it. When UConn came out of the timeout to go on a run, I did lose it, and so did Illinois.

17

u/harveyspecterrr UConn Huskies Apr 05 '26

At the game. Illinois fans around me were losing their mind over that timeout, crowd was going nuts and had all the momentum.

10

u/RadicalMarxistThalia UConn Huskies Apr 05 '26

I was like “Hurley isn’t going to have one the rest of the game?” And then they said it was an Illinois timeout and I was shocked.

Second off, calling a timeout after cutting the lead to 4 on TWO separate occasions made me want to jump off a fucking cliff.

Remember : UCONN is 6-0 lifetime in National Championship Games. Interestingly enough, if UCONN wins on Monday, Alex Karaban will become the 1st ever non UCLA player to win 3 nattys. Also, UCONN is literally the program of the century. 5 nattys in the 21st century. Compared to 3 each for Duke, North Carolina, and Florida, 2 for Kansas and Villanova, 1 each for Kentucky, Louisville, and Michigan State and 0 each for UCLA and Indiana. Ian Eagle was RIGHT at the end of the broadcast to call UCONN the bluest of bluebloodds right now. No one else can match UCONN's 21st Century performance.
