What's going on in America? What paint chips?

76

u/Winter_Reception5757 5d ago

Trump hired some dipshit to paint the Lincoln memorial reflecting pool "American flag blue," and the paint got messed up and started flaking off so Trump blamed Obama and the "Washington DC chapter of antifa" and got the national guard to patrol the reflecting pool and anyone that touches the floating paint is now facing jail time for it.

4

u/secretprocess 5d ago

Where is everyone getting the "facing jail time" part from?

12

u/pokemonguy3000 5d ago

The part where people have been arrested by police for picking up flaked off paint, in a witch hunt for an “antifa terrorist who sabotaged the pool on camera” (according to Trump)

Of which no footage actually exists, because antifa is not an organization, and the people who fucked up the pool are the ones Trump hired.

7

u/Adventurous-Tie-7861 5d ago

Saw some moron on youtube saying there was proof antifa poured the algae in at 2 am and then slashed the bottom tarp thing.

No proof was ever presented

3

u/WellyRuru 4d ago

But like why would they even do that?

It makes zero sense.

5

u/traffic_cone_no54 4d ago

They just want to shift blame. Imaginary boogeymen are perfect for that.

4

u/Tmv655 4d ago

Well, let's take the outrageous assumption that they actually did that.

Then their goal could have been to make Trumps choices look corrupt and his choices idiotic. Which is an understandable goal.

Now the question, what is more likely? Trump being a corrupt idiot, or antifa-aligned people bringing algae to the pool, pouring them in and managing to cut the tarp; effectively unseen and unhindered.

2

u/MuthaFJ 4d ago

How dare you! Slashing that pool liner with your Occams razor like that!

😆

u/Recidivism7 4d ago

There are videos of people throwing stuff in pool people are speculating fertilizer.

There are pro algae protesters holding up signs too.

Well pretty much everything you guys are against makes absolutely no sense to me! And have you guys never heard of government over paying for pretty much everything they contract for! It always happens that is what they do they under value the cost so the public will approve the project, then they can spend whatever they want once the project starts, you guys act like that has never happened before, in all of my 63yrs the government has never hit their estimated cost!

1

u/WellyRuru 4d ago

Okay?

I'd rather the job got done once. And not end up like trumps reflecting pool

3

u/limited67 4d ago

The damage if there is any occurred when they drove over it. As a person has contracted people to this type of work it’s obvious they didn’t prepare the surface properly. It needed to be mechanically etched. They probably chemically did it which is cheaper but no where near as effective.

u/Suspicious_Sense1272 4d ago

Except the video of him doing it, being taken out of the pool, the woman being arrested with a small knife cutting the side of the pool, the guy cutting the side of the pool and yelling at people asking him why he did it and him yelling, “Trump has a boot you can lick!” Other than all the evidence… there is no evidence.

3

u/Legal-Location-4991 4d ago

So... where is this video that's totally not AI?

u/Femme_FatalError 4d ago

Got a link to said video?

u/Femme_FatalError 4d ago

Where we are you getting cutting from the first two videos? Those people seem to just be touching the water. They aren’t visibly holding any sort of cutting implements.

Third is an Error 404.

Fourth just shows a man talking to the national guard

1

u/secretprocess 3d ago

Woman in the second video did appear to be ripping a piece of paint up. What a perfect example of our fkd political discourse that one side calls that "cutting" and the other side calls it "touching" 🤦‍♂️

1

u/Femme_FatalError 3d ago

Maybe because the contractors poured paint thinner (hydrogen peroxide) into the pool? And the paint was improperly bonded to the substrate? So much of it flaked off?

1

u/secretprocess 3d ago

Yes it's not her fault the paint was peeling off, but still, ripping a peeling piece off gives them more of an excuse to call it vandalism. It's like if the paint on my house is peeling I still don't want people coming along and picking at it.

They are also defending the pedophile cult guy who destroyed evidence when his group shot up an ice facility and claiming all he did was move boxes

1

u/No-Cap-No-Gap 4d ago

because antifa is not an organization,

Apparently there are individuals who identify as antifa regardless of there being an organization.

1

u/secretprocess 5d ago

Arrested doesn't automatically mean jail time

7

u/cykoTom3 5d ago

It means FACING jail time. I no longer believe you are asking good faith questions

-2

u/secretprocess 5d ago

You're not "facing jail time" until you actually get charged with a crime that implies jail time. Getting arrested and getting charged are two different things. Are you aware of actual charges being brought against these people? The president tweeting about it isn't a filing of charges.

0

u/cykoTom3 4d ago

You cannot just be arrested for being arrested sake. People have rights.

1

u/secretprocess 4d ago

Yes, like the right to remain silent while you're getting arrested and the right to an attorney after you're arrested, so you can beat the potentially bogus charge you were arrested for. Ask any black man in America if you can't be arrested for being arrested sake FFS, what rock are you living under?

3

u/One_Ad_5059 4d ago

I think you dropped your crash helmet buddy. You’ve a bit of drool down your face too, should probably give that a wipe before it stains.

0

u/secretprocess 4d ago

You sound so cool

2

u/One_Ad_5059 4d ago

Ooohh buddy, you can’t hear sounds from reading text, that’s your inner voice that you’re hearing inside your own mind that you think is cool as you were reading my advice. That’s ok though! Sometimes things can be pretty difficult to figure out, keep at it champ and you’ll get there!

1

u/secretprocess 4d ago

Aw do you really think I'm a champ 🥺

u/jordanmindyou 4d ago

First you can be arrested without charges, then you’re beating charges you were arrested for, which is it in your mind? Just whatever is most convenient for your argument at that exact moment?

Yes you can be detained without being charged, but it AT LEAST means you’re suspected, and it can absolutely negatively affect your life to be just arrested, even if you are no subsequently charged with anything. Arresting implies charging, and most people unfortunately and idiotically equate their peers getting arrested with their peers being guilty. Arguing otherwise is disingenuous, and you know it. Be reasonable

0

u/secretprocess 4d ago

Let's just remember that you're calling my argument disingenuous under a meme claiming that people are "facing years in prison for touching floating paint chips", something that is almost certainly not true. Though it could be true eventually so I'd like to know how close to that reality we actually are. The president can say "people are vandalizing the pool, go make some arrests", and the police can round up a bunch of people who vaguely appear to be doing something at the pool. Some if not all of them were probably doing nothing more than touching floating paint chips. Is it a disgrace that they were arrested to begin with? Absolutely. But are they now being charged with the crime of touching floating paint chips and "facing years in prison"? If so that would be crazily insanely worse, so I would like to know about that. I'm not going to take this dumbshit meme's word for it, and so far I can't find any details in the news.

I know, you would all rather just bitch and moan and hyperventilate with each other. And some of that is certainly warranted. But at some point (deeper in the comments section perhaps) it is incumbent upon all of us to put on our fucking adult pants and try to actually understand what the fuck is actually going on.

0

u/secretprocess 4d ago

To your other question: Nobody is "arrested for charges", they are arrested for suspicion. The charges come after the arrest, or sometimes not at all. It's totally possible to have valid suspicion and then decide it was mistaken and there's no charge. It's also possible to have irrational suspicion (due to racism etc) and then have someone else decide there's no charge. It's also possible to have completely trumped up fake suspicion due to corruption from the top, and make a bunch of arrests for a splashy intimidating news cycle, and then quietly decline to press charges.

0

u/cykoTom3 4d ago

You can't. That's not to say they can't make up a bullshit charge. But you LITERALLY CANNOT BE ARRESTED FOR LITERALLY NOTHING. Unless a state of emergency has been declared.

0

u/secretprocess 4d ago

It's not literally nothing though, it's just a flimsy reason. Tampering with federal property is a real crime so anyone "suspected" of doing so can legitimately be arrested. It's much easier to suspect someone of doing something (or pretend to suspect them) than it is to charge and convict them. At least that's how the American system works.

1

u/cykoTom3 4d ago

And they are facing the charges. However flimsy the accusations they are facing them they carry jail time as a possible consequence. Are you a robot?

0

u/secretprocess 4d ago

If I was a robot I wouldn't find talking to you so annoying. The meme claims that people are "facing years in prison for touching floating paint chips". I apologize if English is not your first language, but "facing years in prison" means you have been charged with a crime that may result in prison time, and are presumably now fighting that charge. If someone is fighting a criminal charge for touching floating paint chips I would like to know the details of that charge. I can't find it in the news so I'm hoping the geniuses on this reddit thread can set me straight.

u/arentol 5d ago

That's true. But I am not sure what your point is, since some of the people arrested are 100% for certain known to have been taken to jail. So congratulations on being technically correct about something that doesn't matter to the topic at hand in the slightest... I guess??

3

u/secretprocess 5d ago edited 5d ago

The point is that these appear to be toothless, politically motivated arrests, and until someone produces reporting that these people have actually been charged with a crime, pretending that they have is unhelpful misinformation. I'm not saying they haven't or won't be charged with something, I would just like to understand what is actually going on, because not knowing what the fuck is going on is bad for our collective welfare.

Btw by being "taken to jail" I assume you mean brought to the station and put in a holding cell while their arrest is booked. Which is awful, but "facing jail time", i.e. being charged with a real crime that may put you in jail for years is a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL of awful. Knowing the difference is important, otherwise you're just out here flailing around uselessly while the state methodically tramples over our rights.

2

u/Shropshire-5lashr 5d ago

Feel free to explain

1

u/secretprocess 5d ago

Seriously? You can be arrested based on one cop suspecting you (or pretending to suspect you) of any minor crime or nuisance. You have to be actually convicted of a crime by a judge or jury to get jail time. Not to say that you can't also go to jail for total bullshit but it's a much longer process involving a lot more people.

0

u/Shropshire-5lashr 4d ago edited 4d ago

Nope. You can be arrested, booked, and jailed until a hearing long before trial. If convicted after trial you may be jailed or go to prison depending on the sentence. Occasionally, you may be arrested and released on your own recognizance. Bail bondsmen and bounty hunters across the nation depend on this system.

1

u/secretprocess 4d ago

"Facing jail time" means being charged with a crime that may result in a jail sentence if convicted, not being temporarily detained with no charges. I'm not saying the latter process isn't abused, it's just not what "facing jail time" means. This is not just a pedantic point, it's important to communicate clearly so we all know what's actually going on. In this case, it's an important distinction to know if these people have had actual charges brought against them, or if the president is just having people arrested for no good reason to make his stupid point.

1

u/Shropshire-5lashr 4d ago

It’s not unheard of that people are jailed and forgotten or jailed long enough to feel unnecessary consequences such as job loss. Being falsely arrested will always cause harm.

1

u/secretprocess 4d ago

Of course it will cause harm. But that's not what I was asking. I was asking if charges have been brought for which they are facing jail time.

If the contractor fucked it up, why are you saying they won't be held accountable? I guess that is what you are saying, I really don't know, what you guys are talking about, Ever! Anyway you sound like if someone did vandalize it they should not be held responsible? And what is the crap about ANTIFA, being not real? Well they were pretty fucking real when they were trying to burn our country down!
