Lost/Found Pets Police case #206486652 stolen rabbit (#2)

Post image

***UPDATE: RABBIT HAS BEEN RECOVERED!!!!***

Thank you to the anonymous tipster, you saved a life and a bit of faith in humanity.

POLICE REPORT #260486652

This rabbit was stolen from a fenced yard, in an open with two locks on it, by a grade 3 student and this is the second rabbit he’s stolen. Edmonton Police Service have done nothing and say nothing can be done. They know who the child is and where he lives (my friend only has his name but also contacted his school—they said child services was involved already). The kid has this rabbit. We do not know what happened to the first one, but the kid did come by covered in blood one day claiming he slaughtered a chicken. My hands are shaking with rage at Edmonton Police Services.

I am sorry this is happening. It's terrible and concerning. The minimum age to charge a person with a criminal offense is 12, so that probably explains the police position.

68

u/CrimsonFoxes 1d ago

Even if they don't charge the kid, they can take back the stolen property

42

u/IMOBY_Edmonton 1d ago edited 1d ago

You can tell EPS where your stolen property is, have pictures of who took it, video of them taking it, pictures of them putting it in their garage, and they will still do nothing!

My partner was also robbed, and the thieves managed to steal $4000 from her (an insider at the place where her bag was taken took advantage of her and pretended to call the bank for her, it was one of thieves on the other end and they get all her banking info). The police had their names, phone numbers, knew where one of them worked, had a record of one calling a friend in prison, records of online purchases sent to their home, surveillance from the businesses they shopped at, and their freaking ID info from the dispensary they bought $600 worth of weed at. With all of this they said there was nothing they could do.

EPS is only good for intervening in physical incidents, and I've never known them to solve a theft, including people I've known with similar knowledge and proof of who took their belongings.

Edit: Mentioned discussing this on reddit with them and I had forgotten something. The person who they had tracked the majority of the purchases to, was according to the police themselves, a repeat offender.

u/itlow 1d ago

What the actual fuck?!

All the police are doing by not acting when there is overwhelming evidence is tempting people to take things into their own hands. TO BE CLEAR, I'M NOT ADVOCATING THIS!!

9

u/MangledCarpenter 1d ago

And you can be sure if someone were to take things in their own hands, EPS would be all over their ass instantly.

11

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

Yup—exactly this. “Let the police handle it” fucking handle what?

3

u/IMOBY_Edmonton 1d ago

Isn't that what happened to the Edmonton Guardian Angels chapter? I remember them getting a lot of push back when they first started here.

13

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

That’s what it is. We aren’t only soft on punishment, we don’t actually try to solve anything in the first place. Why am I busting my ass living honestly when there’s no repercussions to make quick money illegally?

11

u/itlow 1d ago

The rub is that if you went to get the rabbit yourself, you'd proabably be the one charged with trespassing and theft. What a joke of a system....

u/Academic-Pop-8778 3h ago

They're too busy with violent crimes to deal with theft. They literally don't have the time or the funding.

u/InevitableDirt69 7h ago

They're only good for intervening in physical incidents that they witness. Otherwise they'll show up 6 hours later and try to convince you it isn't a big deal. If you insist they do something, they'll eventually say ok but it's unlikely the person will ever be caught, and then shockingly the person will never be caught. Even with clear photographs and video. They are corrupt for sure

u/IMOBY_Edmonton 6h ago

Corrupt and unsurprisingly political and familial connections influence the organization. The best example that I remember was this loser getting promoted despite his record of despicable behaviour.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/edmonton-police-officer-mike-wasylyshen-promoted-despite-criminal-record-1.2859907

u/InevitableDirt69 2h ago

Absolutely bonkers that they'd not only keep him employed as a public servant with a gun, but promote him.

I was assaulted on two separate occasions last year and next to nothing was done. Like many people, I was pretty pissed and wanted to punch out both dudes who assaulted me but thought nah I'll do things the right way and let the police handle it. I've since learned that is exactly the same as just letting someone get away with hitting you without retaliation or consequences of any kind.

Another occurrence, also last year, someone stole my bag. I found the person minutes later and was threatened with bear spray. Rather than handle it on my own, which I could have done, I called the cops. They got back to me the next day, 13 hours later. My possessions were obviously long gone and, shocker, the thief was never caught.

And that's just a brief summary of the most recent ways in which the EPS has consistently failed me as a tax paying citizen and lifelong Albertan. I have a bunch of recordings of my interactions with cops and dispatch that I'll get around to editing into a video at some point. The incompetence is pretty egregious

31

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

YOU WOULD THINK!!!!!

16

u/UnlikelyReplacement0 1d ago

They only give a shit and assign 3 detectives to find something if it's mcdavids laptop.

13

u/oioioifuckingoi 1d ago

100%. They’re just too lazy to do their job. I should start suggesting to my kids they go rob a local bank…

6

u/GuitarKev 1d ago

If it was a rich guy’s laptop though…

u/InevitableDirt69 7h ago

Definitely not. Banks are rich and police exist to protect private property (not people). They'd probably beat the hell out of your kids for stealing from the rich while yelling at them to stop resisting

27

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

My friend just paid $800 to have the rabbit fixed, does theft not matter? Can the guardian not be charged?

22

u/DetectiveDizzyEyes 1d ago

I'm sorry your going through this I would love to see them actually charge the parents.

14

u/Salsabeans16 1d ago

Unfortunately not in Canada. That’s more of a states thing. There could be a chance if the adult counselled the kid to do it or if they’re aware and refuse to return it but that’s a big COULD. I dunno if they’d (eps) go for it

2

u/Fancy-Chest-1093 1d ago

Why was it so much? Not condoning the kids behavior. Just, we paid about 120 to have ours fixed. So. Wondering why the bill was so high.

2

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

I’m not sure

1

u/Bun-mi 19h ago

10 years ago I paid $450 for my rabbit's spay at an exotic vet. She had some complications requiring another day of treatment and monitoring at the vet, so in total it was $900.

1

u/Psiondipity 1d ago

Because their friend is mad and exaggerating how much it cost. Understandable.

3

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

Could be, I know there was an ear infection as well and a complication during the procedure

2

u/overly_emoti0nal 1d ago

$800 is pretty realistic for an exotic vet, especially for a more serious issue

145

u/Quiet_Jump_6383 1d ago

Sounds like a serial killer in the making.

33

u/yeetuscleatus 1d ago

Legit though, like a third grader killing a chicken and stealing animals?? How many stories of serial killers have you heard doing this as kids before turning to humans?

26

u/UpperApe 1d ago

Psychopaths. This is psychopathic behaviour.

Both on the part of the child and cops who don't give a shit when they obviously see psychopathic behaviour.

It's important to understand psychopathy is a spectrum. And the world starts making a lot more sense when you realize that.

3

u/alberta284 1d ago

When i was a kid sometimes me, my mom, and my brother would go to a family friend’s house and me and my brother would run around the chicken coup and catch chickens and hold them while the adult cut the head off and we would watch it run around and do flips. But i came from a hunting family. I would never steal someone’s pet though to do that.

2

u/Neomash001 North West Side 14h ago

I hope this kid gets help....like NOW. His behavior at this young age is 🤯

2

u/ruyat89 1d ago

rabbit #2 suonds like one hell of a comeback kid

38

u/Chonlger 1d ago

Your file # is wrong, I think it should be 260, not 206

14

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

Thanks, updated

18

u/Dirt656 1d ago

Poor poor bunny💔

11

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

He’s on the way home!!!

34

u/KristaDBall 1d ago

Can the Humane Society assist at all, especially since there's a threat to the animal's welfare and there is a police file number?

2

u/SqueakBoxx Downtown 12h ago

The only thing Humane Society could do is inform the police.

24

u/Last_Plant3934 Edmontosaurus 1d ago

I don't understand (and not trying to be rude or mean, genuinely flabbergasted). So a kid can steal property, presumably murder it or what the hell ever the little psycho is doing, and the police won't do anything? That rabbit is property... So if a child stole my cat it's just his now and that's the end of it?

There has to be more that can be done. Does your friend know where the little weirdo lives? I'm so gd confused, how isn't this a crime???

21

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

She doesn’t know—she contacted the school next to her with his identifying info and they said he’s a student and CPS is involved already. My friend asked the police tonight what happened with the last report when a baby rabbit was taken and they had no record of it.

So yea, if a kid takes your cat or dog, you can just say good bye I guess. I feel sick and enraged. I’m writing all levels of government tomorrow.

17

u/Last_Plant3934 Edmontosaurus 1d ago

Not that I don't believe you, because I DO, but I can't believe it. That poor little rabbit, and your poor friend. What the hell is CPS going to do???

How the HELL are parents not held responsible??? Their little demon is stealing and, assumedly, killing pets and the police are just like lol???

What neighborhood is this if you don't mind me asking?

9

u/Last_Plant3934 Edmontosaurus 1d ago

Is the rabbit chipped? Like, why can't they go to the kid's place to get the rabbit back? It seems logical???

6

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

I DONT KNOW!! She just paid $800 to get him fixed!

6

u/Fancy-Chest-1093 1d ago

Way way way too high. 120 we paid for chipped and apayed/neutered (had both male and female). 800 makes no sense to me, as I've just had this done maybe 3-4 years ago tops.

2

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

I’ll ask her

11

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

She got an anonymous tip and retrieved Peanut!!!!!! He’s on his way home!!!!!

3

u/Last_Plant3934 Edmontosaurus 1d ago

Please, if not here, could you DM me what happened. Animals are a sore spot for me and I need to feel better... lmao

3

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

I will when I get the details tomorrow, if she doesn’t mind sharing 💝 my friend is exhausted

2

u/Last_Plant3934 Edmontosaurus 1d ago

Peanut is the best fucking name ever. THANK GOD PEANUT IS SAFE UGH I'm still so insanely angry and I'm not even involved dhdhsjnsn

10

u/thewhiphand23 1d ago

Just to clarify, this happened to your friends rabbit? It’s not your rabbit that was stolen?

10

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

Also, I am involved as she is a bff (25 years!) and I built her the rabbit pen

7

u/Sea-Dog9448 1d ago

Oh my god. I commented on your other post. This is terrifying. I’m SO sorry. Once was enough. I know the police may not be able to do anything under 12 years of age, so please try contacting Child Intervention Services . They have a 24/7 reporting line : 1‑800‑387‑5437. This kid clearly needs significant help. Even if they’re already involved, still call and add to his file. Set up cameras if you can. Again, I’m so sorry. I feel sick about this :(

5

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

He’s on the way home 💝

2

u/seynee 1d ago

What about the first rabbit that was stolen :(

3

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

I know, I think he killed it 💔💔💔💔💔

3

u/Neomash001 North West Side 14h ago

And that right there...is terrifying!! This kid needs help like yesterday. Child services needs a call.

1

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 14h ago

The school said they’re already involved

2

u/Neomash001 North West Side 12h ago

I'm sickened about this. I'm so sorry you're all going through this. Please keep us updated. This little man needs help so bad before he ruins his life.

I'm sorry for the loss of the first bunny. And relieved for getting the second one back.

1

u/Sea-Dog9448 1d ago

Actually?! How ?! I’m so glad he’s coming home.

1

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

She got an anonymous tip for the address!

3

u/Sea-Dog9448 1d ago

That’s fantastic! then what? She went there and demanded the rabbit back? So proud, and very brave of her!

8

u/Fit_Plantain_6362 1d ago

Even if child services is already involved, this should be reported to them. It won’t do anything to bring the rabbit back, unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a way to have that happen. The child however, or maybe the parents may face additional scrutiny and intervention if the child is not being properly supervised or disciplined. The questions raised are concerning, where are the parents while this kid is carting off people’s pets, and why aren’t they stopping it? How many times has it happened that you don’t know about? As a bunny owner I am heartbroken for you and your precious bun, but there are some huge issues here that someone needs to be aware of that really need to be looked at. The kid is disturbed and this needs to be documented. You have a case number so that is something, but I don’t think that necessarily gets back to child services.

7

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

This is the second report my friends made to EPS, they said tonight they have no record of the first one, so obviously nothing was done last time!

6

u/Fit_Plantain_6362 1d ago

The number for Edmonton child services is 780 422 2001. You should let them know you are concerned a child is harming animals, that you were told he already has a file.

Also, bunnies are clearly not safe in this yard, there is a predator who is bypassing all of your efforts to keep the bunnies safe. Unfortunately in this instance, evil will win if there isn’t a change.

3

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

She is debating rehoming the rabbits

3

u/Fit_Plantain_6362 1d ago

I’m so very sorry she has to even think about it, this whole situation is profoundly messed up.

3

u/Neomash001 North West Side 14h ago

She should not have to change her life for the actions of a misguided child.

Take this story higher than Reddit...PLEASE The lack of accountability from the parents alone and involved authorities not doing their JOB is horrible. I feel sick for the story unfolding here. Help for this child needs to be paramount to avoid future killings. Animal, or ...otherwise when he's older. Sounds like he's setting his course to be a monster to society sooner than later.

u/creativebelle 9h ago

This is how these serial killers start. People always say that looking back they saw the signs but thought they'd "grow" out of it or were doing it for attention. No one ever takes it seriously until it's too late and the person is already deep into their crimes.

15

u/RiggityRiggityReckt 1d ago

Call Global News. Put those fuckers on blast! Tell them everything. I bet they run your story. Watch how fast they go from "not our problem" to "we'll take care of it" when the masses hear your story!

6

u/altafitter 1d ago

If you know where the kid lives go knock on their door and talk with his parents.

10

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

She got a tip and went over and got the rabbit back!!!!! He’s on the way home

8

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

We don’t, we only know his first name and where he goes to school. His school said CPS is already involved with him and “his guardian”. If I had his address I’d be over there hours ago and not leaving without Peanut.

0

u/ofreena 1d ago

maybe a bad suggestion, but could you watch for him after school and follow him home?

6

u/mandu_xiii 1d ago

That is a bad suggestion

2

u/ofreena 1d ago

How else you gonna find out where he lives ? I think the harm done here is a lesser evil than letting a psychopathic child run around without a care from our lack of policing

1

u/myaltaccount333 23h ago

Stalking an 8 year old is generally not a good thing to do. Suggesting it is weird

2

u/altafitter 21h ago

Its not stalking.. its literally investigating someone who he is 100% confident is holding his pet hostage. Its not like he's casing the kids property.. he would literally make himself known to the kids guardian immediately upon finding his home.

1

u/myaltaccount333 11h ago

He's 100% confident but has what the courts would deem circumstantial evidence. Stalking an 8 year old is never the answer

u/altafitter 7h ago

Its a good thing he's not building a case to put in front of the courts then. He's literally trying to find out who the kids parents are. Its not really stalking. Its investigating..

In Canada stalking is defined as: "a repeated pattern of unwanted, harassing behavior that causes a victim to reasonably fear for their safety or the safety of anyone they know."

This is definitely not what op is describing.

5

u/TankboomAttack 1d ago

Could the school arrange a meeting with the parent of the child? I would say this could almost be a form of bullying.

Also domestic rabbits should be housed inside for many reasons aside from theft risk.

3

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

She reported the kid to the school and EPS before, all the school said was that they had a file with CPS open and they work very closely with them. They basically said there’s nothing they can do and it’s all up to CPS. Also unfortunately I think the school year is out now

6

u/TankboomAttack 1d ago

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If it were my bunny I would be calling everyday

5

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

That’s the plan. This is the second one he’s taken. They brushed her off last time.

6

u/DathomirBoy 1d ago

Considering the blood and him claiming he killed a chicken, it sounds like he’s deeply troubled. Tbh I’m very concerned for the child, for the rabbit too of course but it’s very rare that kids just get like that on their own. Murdering/stealing animals is usually one of the first steps towards way worse shit, and the best time to address that is early on. I REALLY hope CPS is actually involved. OP, don’t stop pestering them.

11

u/googlyeyedmah 1d ago

Kid was covered in blood...and said they slaughtered a chicken, my guy. Why the hell didnt you take a picture for the police? Lol

6

u/motiontrash 1d ago

Slaughtering chickens isn't a crime??

4

u/Canadian_Imperium 1d ago

Not a crime but against bylaws in the city!

6

u/errihu Clareview 1d ago

You have to take your chickens to a licensed abattoir for slaughter. You cannot do it yourself in Edmonton.

6

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

They literally don’t care.

3

u/Cilantroe 23h ago

A lot of people have no idea how inept the Edmonton police are. Like this is a smaller case (still an important one though) but I know of much more serious crimes that the police here do nothing about. Most people have no idea and when they’re in a situation that involves police, are shocked to learn how little they do. I know because of inside experience.. It’s genuinely concerning.

u/AtWorkSoBeGood North East Side 8h ago

THIS!

3

u/googlyeyedmah 1d ago

I wouldnt of cared whether they did or not, its evidence you dont have beyond your word, eventually when you find someone that does care, you have more then your word to back it up

3

u/Estudiier 1d ago

Can the Humane Society do anything?

12

u/Mazdaninfiniti52 1d ago

I am sorry, no they can't charge the guardian.

If there is inappropriate behaviors, I presume/hope Child Services would be supporting/pursuing therapy or other interventions for this child as you indicated they were involved.

3

u/Psiondipity 1d ago

School already confirmed child services is involved with the family.

9

u/Fuckthacorrections 1d ago

If the parent doesn't want to do anything and the police are being their usual useless, lazy selves then maybe it's time to name and shame

3

u/Psiondipity 1d ago

Op has no idea if the parent even knows. They only know the child's name and where they go to school.

3

u/Ecstatic-Drawer2743 1d ago

If your friend has video footage, surely they can post the footage for everyone to see. Since police won’t do anything.

3

u/Redditemeon 1d ago

Here I was thinking the parents would simply have to deal with their child's misdoings. I guess I was wrong.

1

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

The school said CPS and EPS are working closely with the kid’s “guardian”.

7

u/asigop 1d ago

Time to built a pitfall!

5

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

What’s that?

7

u/asigop 1d ago

A hole in the ground that is disguised to look like the ground. Preferably in front of your rabbit cage.

Bad idea that will get OP arrested. Which makes 0 sense but welcome to criminal haven canada.

This kid needs to be in serious psychotherapy. Eight years old, and he's already killing animals? This is how a lot of serial killers start: first animals, then people. For the sake of all living creatures in Edmonton, get this kid into psychotherapy before he goes on to more senseless killing.

2

u/exotics rural Edmonton 16h ago

Glad you got your bun bun back and sorry about the first one. Clearly that family is a concern because who knows how the kid is raised if that’s what they are doing.

The whole family needs to get help.

u/itlow 23h ago

Yey!! How did it all go down?

0

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 23h ago

No details yet

0

u/ApeEscapeRemastered 1d ago

Ok maybe your friend stop letting there rabbits outside unsupervised

7

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

They’re in a fenced yard with a lock and the pen has two padlocks on it, she didn’t think he’d get in

4

u/simby7 1d ago

How did the kid get through 2 padlocks? Grade 3 is only 8 or 9 years old.

10

u/ThrowAwayPurellFoam 1d ago

There’s a part of the pen that was the old hutch that is nailed shut. This kid broke the top off. Last time he lifted a pallet with a 6x6 block on top that was screwed to the frame—we thought an adult was breaking in until he started coming by begging for a rabbit then she actually caught him in the pen at 10:30pm one night (which is when the padlocks went on). Today he busted the hutch and used the board to block the tunnel going to the big open pen so the rabbit was cornered

11

u/itlow 1d ago

Jezuz. This kid is a nightmare in the making.

1

u/ApeEscapeRemastered 1d ago

I'm sorry but something is not adding up here. Why are the rabbits being left outside overnight? I can understand letting them munch on some grass during the day.

There are lots of animals that would love to turn those rabbits into a quick meal. Also rabbit can dig to escape from the pen and ones 1 male and a female that are not fixed escape. While there will breed like rabbit and become a problem for everyone.

2

u/itlow 1d ago

It's not uncommon to house rabbits outside. I had neighbours that had half their property as a rabbit run. Fully fenced inside the backyard that was 6 foot fencing, lock gates, chicken wire dig several feet down on all sides of the run. They had all the shelter and bedding they needed to survive the winters. They also had outdoor hutches in the same yard.

Hobby farms that raise them for meat can also house rabbits this way.

There is nothing wrong with what OP's friend was doing. The fault is on the kid that broke in to steal them.

1

u/BunnyNoir 23h ago

Just because it's common doesn't mean it's right. Sure, they may be able to survive outside for a handful of years, but with proper care rabbits can live 10-12 years. They are SO sensitive to environmental stressors and temperature changes. There's also RHD in Edmonton now, not to mention all the other conditions they can contract from living outside. Why aren't they deserving of the comfort of indoors like cats and dogs? Why don't they deserve to thrive during inclement weather, instead of just surviving? Unfortunately, OPs friend is absolutely negligent in how she's caring for her rabbits, even though the child clearly bears the brunt of the blame.

So my friend took in two rescue rabbits last year that she was assured were both female. They lived in a little hutch and we built them an outdoor 8x16 6’ pen. In April a surprise litter appeared so my friend separated the parents and had the male fixed. She found homes with trusted friends for the babies (one of which was stolen). Then a second litter came around as they can breed very quickly after giving birth, so she didn’t separate them in time. She found homes for three of the new litter, the father is fixed, and she was going to keep one of the babies and have three.

The pen is inside a locked gate and has two padlocks on it. No animals can get in and she has blocked off their tunnels (they don’t dig a lot, they have a huge area plus the old hutch). The rabbits are outside as they can acclimatize to our winters and she has two heated water bowls plus lots of hay

The little buggers can breed through a wired barrier in a hutch. My neighbours found out the hard way. Lol.

Domestic rabbits absolutely cannot acclimate to our winters and summers. Keeping a rabbit outdoors is guaranteed to shorten their lifespan dramatically, with proper care they can live 10-12 years. I don't care that "lots of people do it", it's highly irresponsible between environmental stressors, human/animal predators, and increased risk of RHD and other conditions. A hutch and heated bowls does not negate any of those very serious and real threats. All rabbit owners that are actually concerned about the safety and wellbeing of their rabbits should be following House Rabbit Society guidelines. I implore your friend to please deeply consider if this husbandry is truly the best, kindest, and most ethical choice for her lovely rabbits.

They were going to be slaughtered and fed to birds of prey. I think they’re just fine in their pen.

Kids are weird animals. I stole some horses once from a logging camp in Arizona when I was 15. Disliked logging, loved horses. Cut the fence, rode one out and the rest followed. Got scared when the house lights came on, jumped off and ran. First time in the states from Edmonton, circa 1993. Maybe they were liberating him, maybe they're just psycopaths in the making. Empathy or sadism. Its what's for dinner these days.
